Hmmm. Very interesting review, buddy. I'm looking to buy a Canon EOS 7D in the very near future. I do quite a bit of photography (mostly personal but a little bit of professional). Now, the 580EX II seems like the obvious choice, but I think even the 430EX II can serve my purpose. I'm having trouble making up my mind. Maybe you can offer some insight into both flashes and let me know what you think?
@LuminolBlue As a 7D + 430EX II owner, I can tell you the 430EX II is more than enough for me. I've used a 580 EXII on my camera and it's just too heavy. The 430EX II is cheaper and with the wireless trigger built into the 7D, you don't need a 580 for off camera shooting.
@SoapyCub Well if you want to use the 580EXII as a commander without using the 7D internal flash settings, you do need it. I suppose its a preference thing.
i have the 430ex2 and 580ex2 and i find there to be no advantage with the 580ex2 -- the 430ex2 recycles faster and is less clumsy and they both work wirelessly equally well when using the 7D camera - i kindof like the 430ex2 better than the 580ex2
cool vid bro!...thanks for some direction! Question, I new to photography. I'm using a canon sx20 is and looking for an external flash to take some indoor/night time shots, is this a good flash for this?

I got 2 Questions dude! 1. Is there like a Flashlight function? (For 500D Movie record for example?) and 2. Can I use the Slave Mode with the normal Flash built into my cam?
I don't plan on using the "master to slave" function just yet. I just want a flash that can be used to bounce off ceilings and such. Plus, would a DIY reflector suffice for an expensive diffuser? Oh oh, and can you use this with the 220EX?
Off-Camera Shoe Adapter OA-2*
+
Connecting Cord 300*
+
220EX
+
40D(which holds the 430EX)
btw, would that setup work? Thanks in advance! Sorry for giving out a hell lot of questions
hey man. just interested if canon have a wireless function built in with their flashes? or do you have to buy an add on? am i right in saying the nikons wireless is built in? cheers
Nikon and Canon both have built in flash slaves. The new Canon EOS 7D has a built in flash trigger so you can wirelessly trigger any number of flashes with it...
But Nikon has the Nikon CLS (Creative Lighting System) which might be more beneficial (and a lot less expensive) for you.
I have too the Speedlite 430 EX II. Thats a very good flash light, but very heavy :(. But it make 3 Flash with my Fpm function :).thats very good. I think for hobby fotography the 430 Ex is good enough.
photo teen, thanks for at least talking while reviewing the product, i hate watching a video of some weirdo just sitting there handling a product with some stupid techno or death metal in the background.
Hi phototeen, have u any idea of 3rd party flash called emoblitz 728 afc?? well, maybe u cud help on d demostration of the technic to use it. I can say its quite a straight forward flash w no manual adjustment. maybe u can show sum demostration on it.. Cheers..
Look at a computer keyboard for example, treat this flash as if you were viewing a keyboard for the first time and had NO idea on how to use all of the buttons. Well, now you can use that keyboard just fine.
"slave" move is where the slave flash (Canon 430ex) fires from either a master flash (Canon 580ex) emitting a wireless signal, which in tern fires the 430ex when the photo is taken along with the master flash.
Well, It doesn't have the built in bounce card that the 580ex/580exII have, but a rubber band and a little bounce card can be easily, and quite cheaply maneuvered :)
for my photography, atv riding in the mountains a hip pouch for a flash is handy, because you can jump off the quad and quickly go after a shot ,needing a flash only sometimes, and having it close at hand is quicker than a camera backpack---ill be sewing a good belt loop on to mine
i just got mine today and im impressed with the quality and the ettl2 is so good its almost always perfect exposier,,and fast recycle time -wow------if i get the 580ex2 aswell will i be able to have ettl2 on both and remote fireing or will i need a radio trigger"???
Hi, maybe u can help me. I have a xsi , just got the 430ex II, but somehow i can't get the display on the flash to read the zoom... i can zoom in ou out with the lenses, but on the flash is aways like this ETTL zoom - - mm....
am I doing something wrong ??? did i forget to setup something on my camera ?
It does have a wireless slave function, yes. However, it does require the use of a "Commander" unit. For example, you could either command it with a Canon 580EX or a Canon 580EXII. It could even be done with a Canon 550EX or a Canon ST-E2 wireless transmitter.
dont waste 200 on the wireless transmitter buy a 580exII and use that as the master flash then invest in two of the new TTL pocketwizzards and you will be in busines
I've just gotta say, you are a very dynamic thinker. However, your dynamic thinking has been flawed here because if you bought a Canon 5980exII for $420 and two pocket wizards (several hundred$)
well, you'd be WAY better off to just buy a Canon ST-E2 transmitter and a Canon 430ex or a Canon 420ex saving anywhere from $400-600
Sorry, no offense with these words, I am simply writing this for the aspiring photographer who needs to know about flash photography. That's why I'm here, merely to help.
Ok well i didnt buy the pocket wizzards for my small camera flashes i bought them for the location strobe pack i use for school, work, and studio shoots, I would still recommend buying a 580ex or 580exII before buying the ST-E2 because then you would have two flashes and wireless ETTL capabilities. Plus with a on camera and off camera you can do wireless ETTL ratios which are fun.
Hi, would there be any reason to go for the 430ex II and not the 430ex. A friend wants to buy this flash but doesn't know if $100 more spent on the 430ex II is worth it.
Just buy the 430ex. I'm not just saying that because I own one, it's that the only difference is the flash mount and weather sealing. The 430ex is a wiser move.
Hi there , i was just wondering , does the flash work well when the lens zooms in at 300mm? because i have a 70-300 lens and im looking to buy this flash.
When you are using a focal length of 300mm you are generally photographing something far away. Using flashes when you double the distance away from your subject you loose 4times the luminance which is why these flashes have zoom features on them to compensate for the distance.
Pretty much what I am saying is that if you are using a 300mm focal length I dont think this flash will do much.
OHHHH! So.. Well I have a really smart guy here.. I might as well ask some questions.. What do the numbers on the lenses mean? lol... That sounds really stupid I know.. Im a photographer but I have lenses (a lot) and they all do different things..I hope you understand my question!
The numbers on the zoom ring are the focal lengths of the lens. the smaller number are the focus distance marks, finally the ratios is the aperture i.e. 1:2.8 means a constant 2.8.
The flash zooms when your lens zooms, or the flash stays where your lens is set if you arent zooming to allow the perfect ammount of power to leave the flash head.
