  • I think this is a great version, but John Lee's version is not the original either. That honor belongs to the great Percy Mayfield, and the name of his song is "Memory Pain."

  • Just perfect

  • I've been learning blues-music hearing and playing this song.

  • One of my favorite songs of all time, this version is unbelievable.

  • original cover

    JJ is the real deal.

  • a true legend of the blues. bar room preacher is one of my all time fav

  • I first got turned on by alligator records. This guy worked in a factory by day and played in clubs at night. Awesome, I like his version better than John Lee's. He really sounds like he is suffering.

  • this is off a compilation album in the 'living chicago blues' series. 1978 alligator records/sonet sonet (france). one of jimmy johnson's best tracks ever.

  • @diiscomboble My Folks had that tape when I was a kid, found it recently and popped it on in the car, some great tunes

  • which album is this

  • great tune...I don't know when it was released, but there's a french radio station that plays it fairly regularly...had to look it up on YT

  • Jimmy Johnson is the worst mother@#$#@ alive, and I mean that as a sincere compliment. He is a musical genius.

  • He plays a lot with dave spector and the blue birds.I saw him at arlington racetrack a couple years ago.

  • Hi31trum

I'm a blues fan from London, UK. I love this track, one of my all time blues favourites.

I did get to see JJ last time I was in Chicago, but don't know how big he is on the US blues circuit. Deserves to be huge. Wish he would play UK.

  • thanks dave. i remember where and when i first laid this record on the record player, back in 1982. the first song didnt do anything for me, but when 'serves me right' came on, i knew i was going to be hooked on this tune for life. i can hear it a million times and it'll still send shivers down my spine. have you checked out jimmy's cd 'every road ends somewhere'. worth every penny!

  • nice. love it. thanks joe for sending
