I don't understand why someone who has lived in the US for 20+ years would be uncomfortable giving a statement in English. My mother's first language is French, but she's lived in the US for 40+ years so now she's more fluent in English than in French. If I moved to Portugal you can BANK that I'd be fluent in Portuguese well before 20 years. As the daughter of an immigrant myself, it's very important to me that I not be read as being racist. I wish all people well. I just don't understand this.

It IS insulting b/c English IS the official language of the US. Language carries culture within it. Learning a language, one automatically assimilates. Therefore, immigrants learning the language is paramount. Invaders who believe they don't have to should be just shipped back to whichever country DOES speak their language! If in a country where you can't speak the language being spoken by 90%+ people around you, it's no surprise to be treated differently. Others cannot properly communicate with you - even if they wanted.

Learning conversational Engl takes 3-5 yrs, Academic Engl takes 5-7 yrs. Children in ESL & bi-lingual ed go home to non-English speaking households thus getting no reinforcement of what was learned at school. It's perfectly okay to speak in your native language. Many Mexican Americans choose to speak Spanish during a testimony, not because they don't know English, but because they are afraid of mispronouncing or using the wrong word.

If you have been here sense 1988 you should speak English! Requesting the speaker to speak English is not unreasonable. Especially since it is a requirement to become a naturalized citizen! Naturalization involves taking tests on American history and the US Government. Naturalization also requires a "WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF SPOKEN AND WRITTEN ENGLISH".

That term suggests that these people came here with by respecting the Rule of Law & intend to assimilate into our culture while adding the best of theirs! The problem isn't with native Spanish speakers, it's with ignorant, ethnocentric people such as yourself who refuse to speak anything but English.

By "official," it does not mean that it is the ENFORCED language. Simply put, "official" states that government business is done in English & no other language. This way, there is no room for anyone to cry foul of discrimination & it encourages citizens to learn other languages. I don't understand why someone who has lived in the US for 20+ years would be uncomfortable giving a statement in English. My mother's first language is French, but she's lived in the US for 40+ years so now she's more fluent in English than in French. If I moved to Portugal you can BANK that I'd be fluent in Portuguese well before 20 years. As the daughter of an immigrant myself, it's very important to me that I not be read as being racist. I wish all people well. I just don't understand this.

Learning conversational Engl takes 3-5 yrs, Academic Engl takes 5-7 yrs. Children in ESL & bi-lingual ed go home to non-English speaking households thus getting no reinforcement of what was learned at school. It's perfectly okay to speak in your native language. Many Mexican Americans choose to speak Spanish during a testimony, not because they don't know English, but because they are afraid of mispronouncing or using the wrong word.
It's already tough enough coming to a country and learning a new language, and even more intimidating facing a bunch of arrogant lawmakers who seem to be more concerned about what language your speaking than what you are actually saying. Harris is disgusting.

The laws are a big part of why the USA is 1st world. Ppl can come to the US under our laws & make a fresh start. They can become fully American; while not President, but maybe governor of a state with an economy as big as all but a few nations. The vast majority of us, who are adamant about enforcing the immigration laws, are fine with legal immigration & embrace immigrants heartily. Language carries culture within it. Learning a language, one automatically assimilates. Therefore, immigrants learning the language is paramount. Invaders who believe they don't have to should be just shipped back to whichever country DOES speak their language! If in a country where you can't speak the language being spoken by 90%+ people around you, it's no surprise to be treated differently. Others cannot properly communicate with you - even if they wanted.

If you have been here sense 1988 you should speak English! Requesting the speaker to speak English is not unreasonable. Especially since it is a requirement to become a naturalized citizen! Naturalization involves taking tests on American history and the US Government. Naturalization also requires a "WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF SPOKEN AND WRITTEN ENGLISH".

By "official," it does not mean that it is the ENFORCED language. Simply put, "official" states that government business is done in English & no other language. This way, there is no room for anyone to cry foul of discrimination & it encourages citizens to learn other languages. Harris and Shapiro aren't insulted that the gentlemen isn't speaking Spanish, it's that he is bilingual and still using a translator. He could of read from notes if he was nervous, the Senators are used to that. Keep in mind they had no problem with non-English speaking witnesses earlier, that wasn't his point.

This is America not Mexico, you want to live and work here learn English or go back to your country. If I were to move to Mexico or any other country I would have to learn the country's language. Why is it different for Mexicans? When u address the a state legislature you should speak the language of the country... ENGLISH. You don't want to learn English don't come here.
