That "cost of living" increase is the inflation...in principle, inflation works so long as it is steady across all markets - including income...but, in reality - this doesnt happen, income will halt and fall back (see now) due to intrusive policies by the State (Federal Government), which our government will step in and claim "we need a stimulus".
..this never works as it is removing resources from the private sector which could be used for 1) savings or 2) research/start up to invest in long term needs of the market -- but, the government rather stimulates the market with short term, non-necessital items..saving public sector jobs, construction of public roadways/parks/facilities, university research, etc...these are a waste if the market is trying to purge them, but our government thinks it can do better by saving them

That "cost of living" increase is the inflation...in principle, inflation works so long as it is steady across all markets - including income...but, in reality - this doesnt happen, income will halt and fall back (see now) due to intrusive policies by the State (Federal Government), which our government will step in and claim "we need a stimulus".

During the Wilson reign - and again during Hoover/FDR reigns of terror - economic prosperity was given the death blow by our Federal Government when the Federal Government removed Capitalism from the private sector and merged it into the Public sector as Fascism...this country has been on a downhill decline every since with the only progress at times of immense credit or employment booms after Wars..

Keynesian economics and government regulated Fascism works as long as there is credit available to continually tax and burden the working class to supplement those who will not supplement themselves.
Now, hard money free market on the other hand, has been shown to remain strong and regulate (keep regular) itself very nicely -- see 1787 to 1913...with a couple exceptions of the civil war and cental banks, both of which should have been avoided if the Constitution was followed

Oh yeah...BTW....thanks to the Bush "tax cuts" for the rich; the Federal Government recieved MORE income taxes from the rich...this is reported by the Congress finance comittee based on IRS data from 2003 to 2008...
Seems with a slighlty lower tax rate - more people are available to earn a higher wage and more people are available to actually pay their taxes; rather than scam out --- like half of Congress and Geitner himself.
