A minor thing but Jim's last name is McNeely and I think it is Marc Johnson ... nevertheless... it is the music that counts and Stan hits a home run every time he comes to bat.
A lesson for any player irrespective of style ,in the approachr to improvisation.
The other great lesson comes from his hero Prez.
Too many players these days bypass on their way to Trane The Bergonz. Ya see most players these days don't get it. It isn't style your really dealing with,
This is a Brazilian song written by pianist, vocalist, arranger, composer and conductor Luiz Eça, leader of Tamba Trio, in the 60's. It has been recorded by a score o great jazz musicians all over the world, including Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Toots Thielemans, among others, many of them you can find here at Youtube.
One of my fave tunes by Luis Eca, Stan plays this with ease and his harmonic approach is timeless. Bossa jazz at it's highest level. The way the chords move around the melody is so deep and harmonious.
His taste in fashion might be poor, but this is the best 'old skool jazz' saxophonist that ever lived. Just listen to the amazing stories this guy is telling us through his horn. His 'lines' are unsurpassed. Great.
