My Grandfather, Eric Whitehead was a radio operator on one of these based in the Solomon Islands in world war 2. Born in the Blue Mountains Australia and moved to NZ. Inlisted in the RNZAF. Did'nt talk about those times much but came back from the war immmaciated. All respect...RIP dear Grandad.

Thank you for the video - it's truly beautiful! I wanted to fly in the PBY that visited England some years ago - but it crashed in Southampton Water (I think the local City Mayor was killed in the accident).Seen head-on the Catalina looks just like a speedboat hanging from an enormous wing. This wonderful aircraft rescued many downed airman. Thank you for sharing your aircraft with someone who remembers the Aquilia Airways flying boats taking off from Southampton Water 55 years ago!

Why not bring back flying boats - surely there is no runway-maintenance cost, and that would make air-travel cheaper? What an elegant way of traveling!

@drmartyn I think you cannot slow down a jet aircraft so much as to land it safely on water.Water will spray into the turbines and ruin them from the shock ( metal fatigue).

Airtravel on a great scale is probably not possible with them, Dornier failed in bringing their once famous flying boats back in the 80s.

The music reminds me of PILOTWINGS for the Super Nintendo. That's not a complaint, though I think it would be cool to hear those engines like Gairm commented.
