@DeathBringer1983 If you have a problem with all the ninja stuff in the comics, that's fine. I also thought Marvel went overboard with that stuff as well. But I must disagree with you about Scarlett. That thing with her and Duke in the cartoons was shallow and without substance, and they never were in a real relationship in the first place. The only character Duke even kissed was Covergirl. Snake Eyes and Scarlett's relatoinship is canon, and one of the most enduring and poplular in comics.

@xraycat30 Snake Eyes had Timber the wolf before he even joined GI Joe. It was explained in issue # 27 of the Marvel comic series. The mini series TV cartoon aired a year after the comic was first published in 1982 and was not very faithful to Larry Hama's source material. Case in point: Scarlett is in love with Snake Eyes in the comics, but the cartoon implied her being in a relationship with Duke. Why? For the convenience of the cartoonists.

@44excalibur Hmmm...well...I think that has to do with the cliche aesthetic of the handsome leader-personality winning the hand of the most lovely lady at the table. Still though, there was a sort of implied relationship or at least deeper feelings between Scarlett and Snake Eyes when Snake Eyes walked backwards into that red poison dust in the first mini-series. You remember Scarlett seemed deeply effected.

@xraycat30 Actually, it had more to do with the animators not wanting to have to deal with Snake Eyes' inability to speak than anything else. Scarlett and Snake Eyes have been a couple in the comics for 25 years and they never paired her with Duke at all in them; so much for the cliche asthetic you mentioned. You're right, btw, about that scene in the miniseries when they touch hands as the glass wall seperates them. The only moment in the cartoon that had real emotional power.

The comics came first, and Snake Eyes' inability to speak was probably the main reason for the cartoonists to pair Scarlett with Duke. I guarantee you if Snake Eyes could speak they would never have paired Scarlett with anone other than Snake Eyes in the cartoons or the movie. He IS the most popluar character, after all.

@44excalibur....hmmm...he might be to many fans, but Duke was clearly the leader of the pack despite being a Sgt. and Snake Eyes always seemed like a loyalist to me...like, the hardened warrior who is a loyal soldier and company man who takes orders. In the common formula of action stories like these, the central love story is usually focused on the leader or chosen one...or call him whatever you want. That's all I'm saying. Hell, I never read the original comics so I don't know.

@xraycat30 Actually, Hawk was the team leader from the beginning, not Duke. Duke wasn't intruduced into the comics until issue #22, and Scarlett and Snake Eyes were already established as a couple by then. And in the comics, Snake Eyes was that chosen one you spoke of. He's got all the backstory and and much of the central storyline revolved around him. HIs love story with Scarlett also had been well-detailed in the comics.

It's just that there is so much story and depth to the mythology of GI Joe comics that fans who are only familiar with the cartoons know nothing about. I started with the cartoons as well, but when I discovered the comics I was shocked to see what I was missing out on, especially when it came to Snake Eyes' story. Sorry once again for being so passionate about it.

Many of the Cobra villains including The Baroness, Zartan, Firefly, Storm Shadow, and even Cobra Commander had personal ties to Snake Eyes. And Snake Eyes/Scarlett was the central love story; Duke never had a love interst in the comics as far as I know, and he was never paired with Scarlett.
