  • A fantastic video, only wish I could play like that.

Can you tell me which electronic/sound effects, if any, that you use for your recordings?

    Many thanks,

  • @david1234543210

Thanks, David. I have a Tascam multi-track digital recorder. It has a very authentic adjustable reverb effect which

really enhances the sound. My accompaniment is created on my Roland Fantom synthesizer,

    Best wishes,

    Jim Watkins

  • Sooooo nice.

  • his wife disliked, after listening 65 years of harmonica sound

no any other explanation : )

  • I'm really going to buy a harmonica this upcoming Christmas. =3

  • Hi Jim, the music you play on harp takes me to the world of imagination. I feel far away from this world. Music has a great value in my life, but the situations were never in favor due to lots of responsibility that had. But now i started learning harmonica and guitar myself. I was able to play "song of night" on my diatonic harmonica. But i too want to learn much more than that. Pls let me know what model you have used here and what i can go for which have good sound and also cheap in price.

  • @bobmohit1

I play a Hohner 64 chromatic harmonica. You may also consider a Herring or a Suzuki chromatic. Unfortunately, neither of them is cheap.

  • Very very matured and experienced demonstration. Thanks for upload. I learnt many techniques from this exhibition.

  • Such memorable tone ??? Which harmonica??Your style is very different--and blowing ---a lots can be learnt just by listening you--thanks for uploading such a soothing composition.

I play blues harmonica, but i've been thinking about getting a chromatic, and this has convinced me to get one, very soon. I really like that mellow tone, very nice to listen to.

Which chromatic are you using in this video?

    Much respect,

    Alexander

  • Hey Jim,

I'm from India and I'll probably never meet you in person. You must know you are an inspiration to me and the sound from your harp goes from the heart to the heart. I hope you are living with music all the time and keep coming up with some of these beautiful tunes. I play a little , listen a lot . Wish I could see you play live one day. Hope you have a long and healthy future ahead of you .All my prayers and blessings !

  • @jundwagg

Thanks for your kind words. I'm pleased and honored to know my music has reached and touched so many good people like yourself around the world.

The chromatic harmonica has been an extremely important factor in my life since I was about 10 years old. What I have managed to accomplish with the instrument is largely due to the influence and inspiration I received from certain remarkable individuals who insisted that I never stop trying to grow musically.

  • it's so smooth and sweet

  • Dear Mr.Watkins, your performance is very appealing to the soul.I too play mouth organ.I want to learn the twelve major scales to play the harmonica better.Would you accept me as your pupil?

  • Thank you for your kind words.

Of course, in order to learn the 12 major scales, you must have a chromatic harmonica (the type that has a slide button) And you simply practice by learning to play the scales by beginning on each of the notes on the instrument respectively. Thats really all I can teach you. It is not easy, and it requires a lot of time.

I've been playing over 60 years.

  • Very nice!

  • this sounds so good!!! I used to play the harmonica in elementary school (i'm in high school now) and I want to get back into it :D thank you for this video!! what harmonica should I get?

  • Hohner or Herring chromatic. Suzuki also good.

  • Hello Jim Watkins, this was very amazing, thanks for the video, now i'm starting to looking forward of learning to play harmonica too:)

  • Thanks, tunerLT

    My advice to any beginner:

Don't spend all your time trying to play songs. Learn the 12 major scales and the rest is easy!

    Best wishes,

    Jim Watkins

  • Mr. Watkins , This is probably the best and most smooth music ever heard on harmonica. I also play harmonica but not even 50% of urs, U r great, Can you please tell me what kind of harmonica you use? U R THE BEST JIM.

    Pankaj

  • Thanks for your kind words. I play a Hohner 64 chromatic. I've been playing for over 60 years, so I guess I should be pretty good at it by now!

Best wishes for the new year!

    Jim Watkins

  • I've never heard the harmonica sound so smooth in my life!

  • I'm very pleased that you enjoyed it. Thanks for taking the time to let me know.

    Best Wishes,

    Jim Watkins

  • My Uncle used to play sadly he passed away some time ago. However there is a chap called Henry Samuels who is 86 and lives in the USA and still plays and is very good so I think any one who still has a passion for music and would like to learn to play an intrument then go out and buy yourself a Harmonica and have some fun learning to play it. You can be any age and if you look at any harmonica player your find they play always play from the heart.

    Great playering and Good Luck

  • Well said!

    Thank you for your comments,

    Best wishes,

    Jim Watkins

  • Well done this was excellent!

  • never knew someone could play this well on a harmonica, its as if you have an angel on your shoulders

  • superb

  • Thanks very much, pharoahsoulero!

    I appreciate your comment.

    Best wishes,

    Jim Watkins

  • simply the best, congratulations

  • Thanks, SaetaSombra !

Nice of you to say that!

    Best wishes,

    Jim Watkins

  • Wow. That is simply amazing. Wish that my harmonica playing could sound that rounded and smooth.

  • Thanks hourof10,

I've been playing since I was about six (over 60 years).

I ought to be pretty good by now, anyway I'm glad you think so.

  • You're very good, Jim. However, 1) sthg's wrong at 3:35 and 3:36 - I think it's the 2 accompanying chords; 2) You said "If you want to play like me, start when you're very young..." I think you should ENCOURAGE people (even "old" guys like me) rather than DISCOURAGE them (prob. unintentional on your part). I'm 57, been playing chromatic for less than a year and a half, made great progress, and even play in a band. I'm determined to master the instrument and refuse to believe I'm too old!!!!

  • Hello Landztranz,

Thanks for you comments. I certainly meant no offense by my remark about starting young. It was just my way of expressing the fact that although the harmonica is not regarded as a legitimate musical instrument in some elite circles, it is not a toy, and it requires serious dedication to master it. Good luck with your playing, you're never too old.

    Jim watkins

  • Thanks for the reply, though I still want to know what happened at 3:35-3:37. And here's something very strange: You responded to my comment, but it doesn't appear anywhere on this page!

  • You're very good, Jim. However, 1) sthg's wrong at 3:35 and 3:36 - I think it's the 2 accompanying chords; 2) You said "If you want to play like me, start when you're very young..." • I can't seem to post a comment here - or can I?

  • wow this is a C note harmonica right

  • It's a Hohner 64 chromatic. It is pitched in 'C' but, being chromatic, it can be played in any key.

  • okim 12 and just started playing and this is another instrument im trying to teach myself to play. ive got a piece of junk C not one but what would be a more so exspensive nice harmonica to start out on

  • Hello CGiordano464,

I suggest a Hohner or Herring chromatic. If you really want to learn to play, don't spend all your time trying to play songs. Instead, become familiar with all twelve major scales. If you master the scales, the rest is easy.

    Best wishes!

  • very very cool. 10 stars

  • Mr. Watkins, I'll never master this 10 note much less like you play. This is so great, congratulations. It's great ! I played some as a kid, but got serious about 6 years ago , when I found out I only had One Lung. I was a Dallas Firefighter for 20 years, and on top of everything else I did to destroy my lungs , that did it. I use this as a theropy, to help my breathing. Your such an encouragement. Loved your song, Hoyt

  • Thanks, olwhistler!

I believe harmonica playing is indeed good therapy! I always get a feeling of exhilaration after playing for an hour or two. My Best wishes to you!

    Jim watkins

  • i am lost in the performance, GREAT!

  • I´M HAPPY NOW

  • damm ur good wish i could play good

  • Sir Jim Watkins , is their any way i caould learn to play like you ,

  • If you want to play like me, start when you're very young, and promise yourself that no matter how long it takes, you're going to master the instrument. Then don't spend all your time learning songs, instead become totally familiar with all 12 major scales. The rest is easy. Good luck

  • As another chromatic player I fully agree with your advice of learning all the 12 scales. I loved your tone. Can you please tell us if you are a "lip" player (like Toots) or a tongue-block player ? Any advice on how to get that beautiful clarinet/sax like tone ?

  • You're very good, Jim. However (1) At 3:35 and 3:36 something is off - I think it's the 2 chords on the synth: They don't jive with the note you're playing; (2) You said "If you want to play like me, start when you're very young..." WADR, I really think you should ENCOURAGE people - even OLD guys like me (57)! I've only been playing for less than a year and a half, made a lot of progress, and have every intention of becoming VERY GOOD. I already play in a band. I refuse to believe I'm too old!

  • harmonica in c or a?

  • It's a Hohner 64 chromatic. It is pitched to 'C' , but, being chromatic, it can be played in any key. This particular song is in the key of D-flat.

  • I enjoyed that song immensely, keep it up daddy 'o

  • This is great. Real music.

  • AMAZING

    absolutely amazing ~

  • Very nice....

  • Hats off to you you old blower that is so pure the way you play please keep posting?

  • This is just beautiful. Absolutely amazing. I wish I had a fragment of your talent.

  • Thanks for your kind words. What I've managed to accomplish with this beloved little instrument didn't come easy. perhaps now, after over 60 years, I may have mastered it .

    best wishes,

    Jim Watkins

  • is there much of a diffrence between a diatonic and a chromatic?

  • A chromatic is like a piano with white and black keys.

A diatonic is like a piano with only the white keys

  • Simply put, a really calm and beautiful performance. Thank you for sharing this with us YouTube users. Peace be with you.

  • If there is a thing I don't like it's that there are people who get famous singing b!*#)@it and making playback. And this song that's art in it's purest form and the artist ...you can see his expression ...how dedicated he is to the song. I can see that he is oldschool....he is still thinks about music as an art ...not a money maker. I wonder why this video hasn't millions of views.....maybe because we forget what true music is...

  • this is outstanding i got my dads old mouth organ out today just to try im gonna try to learn something simple then try this

  • beautifully played really i keep coming back to listen to you play

  • Thanks, musicxparadise!

I appreciate your letting me know you enjoyed it.

    Best wishes,

    Jim Watkins

  • i could fart this song and it would still sound inspiring. great tune and a fine player tho

  • Thanks!

You might have to really strain to reach the high notes!

    Best wishes,

    Jim watkins

  • Oh, wow! Can't stop listening this! :D

  • Hello nellupellu,

I'm very pleased that you like my performance.

thanks for taking the time to let me know.

    Jim Watkins

  • Awesome job on the Chromatic, I love that song. Will have to learn how to play it on my Chromatic.

  • wow what harmonica is it...?

  • Hohner 64 chromatic. You're probably used to hearing diatonic "blues harp'" players. There's a thousand of them for every one chromatic player.

  • i found out my mom had an old 64 so im trying to learn it. i think the chrom has such a beautiful tone to it. stevie wonder drew me to it actually.

  • Hi Timmy,

Keep working with it. It took me many years to learn to play the chromatic. Stevie Wonder Recorded an album on the harmonica, but for some reason,, had his name spelled backward: "Eivets Rednow. I've never known why he did that.,

    Jim watkins

  • i believe it was because motown wanted to keep stevies R&B singer image. so they agreed to release it with his name backwards. ive heard some of the album, and im hoping to get my hands on it one day.

  • Are you playing in G-dur ?

  • Nope!

    its in D-flat

  • Also playable on a diatonic, in C!!! Thank you Clans!

  • I really enjoyed this!

  • Im gonna try and play canon rock when I get my chromatic harmonica ;)

  • Nice!

  • e foarte tare

  • Very well done!

  • like it

  • Well done, that was beautifully played and did the song great justice.

  • can you get in on Mp3?, i would like to have it on my phone too

  • rofl

  • Nice one Grandad! That was SWEET! :)

  • doublepost fag.

  • Nice one Grandad! That was SWEET! :)

  • please tell me , what is name of this music ?

  • "Music of the Night" from 'Phantom of the Opera'

    by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

  • thank you very much !

  • PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. a classic.

  • I want something like this at my wedding. would you be interested in playing

  • Not really, but thanks for the compliment.

  • so beautiful!!! :)

  • This is brilliant.I have a Hering Velvet Voice in C Key and am trying to learn this one from your excellent video.Fingers crossed and all that.Greetings from U.K. great work.

  • great skills dood!!! : DDDDDDDDDDDD

  • Good one ! I suggest you link this to DynamycDesi - they give awards to such real talents....

  • wow. the nuances are otherworldly...

  • nice nice nice

    THANKS from Slovakia ;)

  • excellent!!

  • i cant get tired of this instrumental cover. it is so... it is magical, love it. And I realy love the sound of the harmonica. What kind is it?? I will try to play this by myself. 5/5

  • I've been thinking of taking up harmonica for a long time, this has just about convinced me!

  • Ncula' comma sune!!!

    fantastic!!!

  • Nice playing

god damm why i have F minor natural Harmonica :(

  • that was brilliant!

    BRAVO!

  • That was a beautiful rendition, your vibrato is amazing, you inspired me to keep practicing on my vibrato. Some of the fellows at my club have that sound also, but i find it very hard to get it that smooth.Once again, simply amazing sound.I think i'll listen to it again... and again.....

  • Thanks Harmonipat,

Concerning the vibrato, I honestly can't explain how it's done.

I really think it's something that can't be taught but must be"discovered". But I can tell you it involves the diaphragm

(at least in my case) and it's completely effortless.

    best wishes,

    Jim Watkins

  • Thank you for the reply. My reason for asking is that the C chromatic seems to me to be like a piano....all the notes are there to be played in any key. I have only 2 chromatics, one C pitched, the other in C Tenor pitch, each 3 octaves but I find that some songs will reach beyond the 3 octave range...I think a 64 is in order for me soon. Your many years of diligent practice is very apparent, you're an inspiration.

  • Very nice....love the vibrato or tremolo you use. Do you use only a C chromatic and play other keys on the C or do you select a chromatic in the key of the song you are playing?

  • Hello Harpman54

My 64 chromatic is pitched in 'C'. I take pride in being able to play freely in any key on it. This is not an easy thing to accomplish. You have to practice diligently, working all of the scales until they become completely familiar. It took me many years!

  • Just another thing. I find the Hering sound more melodious esp on something like the Velvet Voice model in Hering's range is simply superb.

  • Simply splendid!

  • This is outstanding. I have several freinds back in India who play chromatic pitched in 'C' but any key. I can play on "C" harmonica in Am (C's relative minor scale) and some bit in F (flat). However with Harmonica's available in a wide variety of key's this is not critical anylonger. Would you agree.

  • Hello Vidyut,

I have little experience of Herring. I've heard there was a problem with the wooden comb on the earlier ones. I play exclusively on a Hohner 64 pitched in 'C' . playing in all keys on it is no problem for me, I realize some chromatics have been produced pitched in several other keys (F,G,Bb)

But I don't see a meed for them if you've got a good 64 and you know your way around on it.

  • ¡¡¡sıɥʇ ǝʌoן ı

  • Thanks Jim for this beautiful rendition played with passion and perfection from a pro.

  • damn i fell in love with harmonica's when i was a little kid and i still love them because of people who play it this good! it's amazing! makes me melt away!

  • i wish my pop could do that, brilliant

  • Amazing! So beautiful.

  • Классно играет!

  • I enjoyed it very much. Thanks for posting your rendition.

  • you're so so cool..

  • very good..

  • this is so cool, i really like this kind of music...and your so great.. c:

  • Yay, Qua, that was nice!!!

  • Thanks! that means a lot, coming from you!
