I live in Polk County; I have nearly my whole life. Having actually met Sheriff Judd on a few occasions, I can confirm that he's just as big a pompous and ill-informed ass as he seems. He wants to give the equipment to struggling areas, but he seems to forget about the struggling areas that don't happen to have a church in them. In my town, there's a struggling Boy's and Girl's Club, which could absolutely use the equipment. But I've never seen Sheriff Judd do anything for that place.

If Sheriff Judd deems it appropriate to remove the athletic equipment from the jail, that is another issue entirely. Atheists of Florida is not saying that the equipment should not be given to children. They're saying that the equipment must be placed in a public area for everyone to enjoy. There's nothing 'mean' about that. What's really wrong here is a representative of the government donating something payed for with taxpayer money to a church. That is unconstitutional.
