this is a response to ojoroto who claims that waterboarding is torture bec. it fits in with the dictionarys def. of torture, meaning "severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something". That has nothing to do with defining what is an abuse of human rights through torture. Even if the pain is severe if there is no permanent damge it should be done to protect human rights (see my first post).

the only reason not to do these things to terr. suspects is the fear that use of torture could spread to domestic use in regular criminal cases etc. but someone who is suspected of terrorism must be stopped at all costs. There must be a certain level of trust between citizens & the govt. that such practices will not be used domestically, but to say that toturing suspects is 1984esque is absolutely wrong bec. it is not being used on people who want freedom only on those trying to end it.

It should also be pointed out that waterboarding was not used widely. Guys like khalid sheikh mohammed should be waterboarded as a means of compelling cooperation, torture or not.

It also harms the military by motivating experienced troops trained at government expense to leave the military and join Blackwater for the big bucks and easy duty.
