@houari2009 every word in the english language that has i and e next to each other, must be written i then e, for example 'fries' or 'cried' but if the i and e come straight after a 'c' then it must be 'e then i' for example 'received' or numerous others.

So, the phrase "i before e except after c" is just a little way of remembering which way round the two letters go when they are next to each other in words. Commonly taught in schools. Jim made it way more dramatic though...obvously haha
