  • not just like ..... love this song

  • Ya, the charity of night is one of my fav albums from him! Great stuff!!

  • my fave Bruce song. ~cg5

  • Those who cage non-human animals are the Kings of Holocaust.

  • Bruce is god.

  • Well, John Lennon said "Don't worship dead Heroes" You miight have something there...

  • been hooked on the water from this well for a lonnnngg time!he sure serves the best.

  • He just makes ne happy, nina

  • God, he never fails to amaze me. He writes the most beautiful, meaningful lyrics I've ever heard - the man is an absolute poet. And his guitar work is incredible as well... his music always leaves me speechless.

  • Incredibly wonderful song. I fell in love with the Buffet cover, not knowing it was a cover. Bruce's version is even more touching and tender.

p.s. wish the audio sync was better.

  • a true genius, all singers and guitar should be like him

  • Is there two versions of this song because one starts, "Sometimes the best map will not guide you," and the other starts, "Sunset is an angel weeping."

  • No bluesuseshoes2222...this is just the last verse of the song. Wish there was a video of the whole song here...there's an amazing fretless bass solo in the full version

  • Great song does anyone know what CD its on???

  • "The Charity of the Night" and "Free Tossed Salad I". May be on others too, he has so many.

The Charity of the Night also has "Night Train" among other awesome songs. Great CD!

His lyrics are genius. The Canadien poet. Great in concert too! Great guitarist.

  • Charity of Night is an "okay" CD...I started top lose interest in Bruce by that time though. He always does too much spoken word, and not enough singing.

  • It's too bad that people are rating your comment negatively just for expressing an opinion... it's not like you're being nasty or anything.

Weird how peoples' opinions can differ though, even in regard to the same artist. Personally, I think "The Charity of Night" is Bruce's best work, especially with regard to the lyrics. Every song on it makes me emotional in some way... of course I'm like that with ALL of Bruce's work, just more so with "The Charity of Night." :P

  • Another great song by Bruce.

Does anyone know what guitar he is playing?

  • I believe it. Cockburn is an unsurpassed songwriter, but a very bland performer. I'm grateful for both the emotional genius of the composer, and the demonstrative personality of the cover artist.

  • p.s. This was meant to be a response to acavideo's praise for Jimmy Buffet's cover version. Guess I clicked the wrong répondre.

  • That is the most inane comment I have ever read!

How can a cover ever beat the genius that is Bruce?

Granted some covers are ingenious and fun but nothing beats the original in this case.

  • can someone post the whole song??? would love to hear his entire version..

  • wow...great song. and feel honored to have met this awesome guitarist..

  • Next to my beautiful wife, my greatest blessing in life has been to live when Bruce Cockburn lived and wrote and played his music. I would be a different person without him.

  • I understand you completely.

I saw Bruce live for the first time 5 years ago with the woman who is now my wife. I was so overcome by the event that I silently cried tears of joy during the first 2-3 songs. My now-wife watched me doing this and found it very tender.

  • Thanks for sharing that experience lalunette. I remember a Bruce show back in 1985...the first song I ever heard by Bruce was 76's "Lord of the Starfields"...my father took me to the concert in London, ON, and "Lord of The Starfields" was the first song he played...my father and I just looked at each other and said "wow"...It was spiritual, and I'll never forget it.

  • Besides his being Canadian (which is very cool) also distinct is that he's a Jewish Christian. I love this three combo of identities if taken gently...

  • my favorite part of this amazing song. Sara Mclean song a great version of it for a documentary on Bret Hart

  • Too bad the video doesn't match up with the audio, otherwise a beautiful song.Does Bruce write a lot of his own songs? If he does the guy is a genius.

  • He is a genius - and he writes all of his own material. He's been writing and recording here in Canada for more than 30 years - a national treasure.

  • He writes them ALL. Genius he is.

  • Hmmm ... looks like You Tube removed a few Cockburn videos. A recent video of Bruce singing "Justice" was removed. It was here a couple of weeks ago. Shame.

  • i guess more 'legitimate' cockburn videos will be posted. there's a new channel for truenorthrecords or something like that and they're promising more.

  • He is the greatest poet/song-writer ever...he is the top of my desert island list.

  • This man's wisdom floors me every time I hear that song. Gorgeous.

  • He closed his show in London here last fall with this and I had forgotten about it till this morning at 2 am. I listened to it six times and cried six times.

  • Thanks to be alive. I play some of your pieces in Italy, ocasionally, and I'm glad to make this.

  • just amazing! bruce is one of those people who's not only a killer player but a killer lyricist. just a consummate performer!

  • I whole-heartedly agree with you virginvoice, to me Bruce is the true master.

  • Bruce Cockburn is a musical prophet-witness of our times for past 30 years.

I encourage you to visit his web site at

    http://www.brucecockburn.com/

Download the song they call it democracy.

    it says it all..

    Thanks

  • Wow. I agree with notbadphonedaddy's first comment----NOT all great songs become great hits. THIS IS A GREAT SONG that SHOULD HAVE BEEN a great hit! Another note: yeah this is on par with Dylan. But he could have NEVER written it. Just as Cockburn couldnt have written Blowin In The Wind. Two songwriting powers, two different songs. And as far as I am concerned, they are both made of the same "stuff"

  • I wanted to send the same message to to you as notbadphonedaddy:

I think that it's because Bohemian paths and ideals relate to the individual and are hard for an organized mass to relate to.

  • Another thing...I didn't know Jimmy Buffett sang this song as well. I'd like to hear his version.

  • Sometimes some of the best songs..musically written and with a story that is so true are overshadowed by songs that flow with the mainstream wants of society. This happened with this song, great song, great story. I'm surprised Bob Dylan didn't write it.

  • I think that it's because Bohemian paths and ideals relate to the individual and are hard for an organized mass to relate to.
