WOW...I am so happy with this update, this will truly pass an Author a REAL value that the One always wanted. Being an Author, i am really excited, as i have been facing so many problems when my content have been copied many times with out giving the credibility to me. And i am not been able to help it out. But Now Google is doing it for me. Thankyou Matt and Othar for breaking this News. :)
Why do I need a telescope and a degree in handwriting to read Othar's script? Can't Google spend a few bucks here on some decent graphics or a Power Point?
I'm registered on Google Plus and already has a Google Profile. When I link to my Google Profile, I'm getting redirected to my Google Plus-profile, why? This is really annoying and I can't use my nickname-url at Google Profile anymore!
Why are they acting like rel="author" is something they came up with. This has been around for years. This is one of the reasons Google is SO hard to trust.
Great Idea! So good news. So now we may really now who really owns the content and we would know what is and what is not duplicate content. How I dint think about it before... great idea!
It seems the Google+ rules ( "use your real name" ) apply if you want to create a Google profile now ? Can't have a profile for a non profit organisation ?
What if I want my author link to be to my own personal web page, rather than my Google profile, but still have an image from my personal web page that is displayed next to the result?
Question: how about «link rel='me' href='/google.profile'» in the «head» tag?
I don't have much on my Google Profile yet so I'd rather not use a visible link but I would like to show my face next to my website ( Bfred.it ) in the search results.
This didn't help me much. I couldn't read what was being written on the board, and I couldn't hear half of what they were saying. Why didn't they just write more clearly and larger, and speak up?
Using the rich text snippet to debug: If g+ is not the first linked rel ME (mind you it is the only linked rel author)
it produces an error "... has links to more than one Google Profile". Also the first rel me link is used as linked author profile.
When g+ is the first rel me this error goes away, but I doubt that it solves the problem and would probably explain why even after a week the search engine results are not updated. I'd like to see an example where it is not top right hand ...
I think you should have mentioned more prominent the rich snipped testing tool (can be found at the bottom of the link they gave in the meta data) and how long it takes for the result to appear in the normal results.
There's a flaw with this: a Google profile is required. So, whats the flaw? If you are a paying Google customer, i.e. a Premier Apps user, you can't have a Google profile!!! (At least not without using a different login, since Google is phasing out multiple logins with the same e-mail address.) Google needs to fix this - it puts paying customers out of features like this and Google+
@IamTheEddy Who said Google Apps was intended for personal use? Not me. I use it to run my business and like nearly any business these days, social media is an essential part of communications with customers. We use Twitter extensively as do other companies large and small. Google+ isn't available to us, despite being paying Google customers. Social media, inc Google+ has massive business potential and definitely isn't just for personal use.
@IamTheEddy "Google Apps was never meant for personal use" - this not the case. It has been promised for Google Apps users for a good while. It has simply been released to personal users first, that's different from 'never meant for'. Google stated in March that it was 'coming soon' for Google Apps users on the Official Google Enterprise Blog.
Something this confusing and of questionable value, I would see this signal as something that spammers manipulate, and legitimate authors can't be bothered to figure out. This reminds me of the whole semantic web froth. Maybe back in 1995 when it was all benevolent hobbyists, this might have gotten traction, but not now.
Interesting - a great way to improve the context in which content is being delivered on search engines. I'd like to see how webmasters start adopting this in the future.

Will you show multiple author images against a search result if a paper has been worked on jointly by multiple authors?

Great. I appreciate the rel=author insite.
Does not, "The Type Hierarchy" on schema.org serve the same purpose ?
