ive been hearing alot about shipyards adopting fcaw for almost everything including pipe, i used to work in a fab plant where we migged and core wire welded low pressure pipe, since it wasnt code a full pen. root was not required but i would often practice at it with little success. do you guys know much about wire welding pipe to code? i am certed. to uphill sch 80 with 6010 root 7018 cap and was pretty damn good at that but this wire welding is just fucked up for roots
first time i seen weaveing in V-groove most welding plans call for stringers weave will cause way to much undercut.Greater chance to failing inspection on xray and ultrasound.
@cjsaders AWS often requires stringers for vertical however ISO trains weaves, i got ISO trained in Germany and the instructor would not let me do stringers for vertical, but my AWS trainer in the US frowned on weaves, he wouldent fail them automatically but he would scrutinize them closely, i personally prefer a cold weave cause i think they look friggen awesome when you do a good job but they both have pros and cons
Also a good tip,try putting your ground above your weld position in vertical up.The ground will help the gravity of the weld pull up instead of down when the ground is under your plate. It really helps a lot.
There's undercut like crazy in this weld.Turn your machine down.I run my temp 65-75 e6010 1/8 rod and always get 100% penetration.Like my welding teacher in school said,if you can weld it and have no undercut and 100% fusion and penetration doing it your own way than keep doing it that way.
Im sorry but those are horrible welds, on the cap u were going way to slow and stay in the middle too much, you have to hit the sides and stay out the middle.
nice job on the video, not a nice job on the weld though....i did great on this one, i start overhead open root v groove tomorrow...it seems hard as hell.
I have to do one of these v-butt tests in two weeks to get in to a coded pipe welding course..Iv done this before but iv been out of work now so long due to this fucking recession in Ireland that i need to get some practice in....
..Looks Ok to me...the prep work is 100% right..5P (6010) root, fill and cap 7018....and this would of course be the same as 6" sch 80 pipe..around 5/16"...
that is one terrible weld you should have used 2,5 mm 7018 for the bottom pass and the 2 middle passes the 2 middle passes should have been on the edges then 3,2 mm 6010 for the cap
SOME OF THE COMMENTS HERE ARE SO FUCKING CHILDISH. BOTTOM LINE IF YOU CAN DO IT BETTER POST A FUCKING VIDEO OF YOURSELF WELDING. TALK IS VERY CHEAP HERE!
this is horrible. first of all, dont extend your arc for the root pass! keep it tight and you will get a nice CONSISTANT root pass. not that shit that any instructor would never let you pass with.
thats a awsome weld i recon! if i could weld that good id be seriosly happy..im doing a trailer reno and have a checker floor ( 2.3mm thick) to go in and a side door to make, also the back ramp door need a little tacking up. Im going to use a combination of Arc stick and gassles mig welding. i was thinking about only gasless mig but my old ryobi arc welder is now in mind for some of it too. Thanks for the video
@aaronleintaylor. So where is your "better" stick weld video you little bitch??? Lets see it so we can judge yours. Again, i think the video posted is acceptable. It may not be a Picasso or Rembrandt, but its good enough for most beginners here. Again, post your best welding demonstration bitch. Otherwise get yer ass back on the corner workn you little trick.
@jordzzzzzz. Well where in the fuck is your "bitchen" welding video??? I dont see it on youtube? Lets see you put out bitch. Let us judge your welding technique. Bunch if punks here claiming the video looks like crap. Perhaps if he was welding for the space shuttle it may not pass. But for the "at home garage welder," its fine.
@ColtDeltaElite10mm Hahaha i dont get paid to film my welding as a career welder. I'm a journeyman welder with pressure tickets and that looks like shit. Welding inspector would not be happy. Shut your face bitch i got welds out there holding 100 000 lbs non static loads. Suck it.
we were all trained to stick and mig at training college that really isn't that good! to me the power setting is right but the technique is very rough!
@aaronleintaylor I'm sure you can do much better and for that I am proud of your accomplishments....good for you. Your comment has helped everyone who reads it become a better welder. You truly must be a god.
@theShaun2411 We're not interested in bitch ass comments. You know how to do it right? Then post a video of you welding, explain it step by step. Otherwise use your time can be better used jerkin off in someone else's ear.
@Aurange9 flat: 0 degree to slight drag angle, filler and cap the same, maybe a little more heat. Horizontal: roo t work angle aimed slightly up, still 0 degree or a bit of a drag angle, filler and cap are stringer beads from bottom up, rod aimed slightly upward.
D1.1 doesnt specify rod thickness for tests the wps does. Unless told otherwise you could run whatever you like but its more likely youll be told what size to use by the test supervisor.
Are 3/32 7018 rods required in the AWS code for this test? I just burned one of these tests this weekend for practice, and after the 6010 root, I'm ending up with roughly a 1/4" wide weld on the root. After finishing the 6010 this thing basically feels exactly like welding the D1.1 1/4" gap backup bar test. I switched over to 1/8" (because it's all I had in my stash), and that first pass is pretty tight, just like the backup bar test, but I can start weaving on the next fill pass.
@gabesprofile a belt sander works good or if your using an angle grinder just make smooth consistent passes with it. To finish off, lay the wheel flat on the edge (instead of 30 degrees) and run it back and fourth a few times to true it up.
I tested with a 1/4" root and backup bar, all 7018. I've started to practice the open root tests. Does it matter, code-wise or otherwise, if you do the 6010 downhill? I've always had a much easier time with the step/pause downhill just because you can see what's going on a lot easier.
@ekfinn It all depends on the welding procedure you are testing to. There is nothing wrong with downhill but some employers frown upon it and would rather see a vertical up.
and i thought iam the only one thinking that,as for me i would be embarrest to deliver a weld like that, but maybe he just started with welding i dont know,at the weld looks like it
The back of the root pass should look like a normal bead. Practice forming a keyhole and use a whipping motion to keep it moving when doing a root pass
I'm very new to welding and everyone keeps telling me to watch the puddle, then tell me that I'm not watching the puddle when the weld turns out bad... finally someone told me what to watch for when I'm watching the puddle. Cheers again this video helped me heaps... now I know what to look for I'll put it into practice tomorrow.
i see that you have undercut on your hot passes, and you are uneven on the distances from side to side on your cap...try to go half the rod width over the sides on both sides that way you see more consistancy in your welds.
Hello,, I'm a new learner, How will i know if im doing a good penetration. can somebody show me how it looks like at the back please. thank you very much.
@bsgs74 the back of the weld vid should be better. almost as good as the core pass with the 6010 . smooth so no products will be hung up ,or under cut the pipe weld. its still takes so much pracitce. i was learning to weld pipe with the 6010 rods. thats were i s coming from. good penetration has no under ,cut smooth riples, no slag
THE VIDEO IS GOOD, BUT FOR A 6010 U GOTTA CALIBRATE UR OWN USE OF TEMPERATURE, NOT ON STEREO TYPE USE OF TEMEPERATURES, VERTICAL WHEN U WHIP UR SUPPOSE TO WAIT ON A ROOT PASS FOR A PERFECT CIRCLE THEN WHIP WHIP ON EACH CIRCE,... I CAN DO A BETTER ROOT PASS USING MY FEET LOL!!
hot pass you can cook the root pass hot pass run it at like 90-95 3/32 7018 rod run a 2 pass stringer weld grind it out //now for your cap 3/32 7018 rod 95-100same thing use a 3 pass stringer and grind between passes it makes a pretty weld appearance and its strong
alright back to the basics when ever your running your root pass on a v groove like that you want to start at the top work your way to the bottom its faster, cleaner and leaves a small but strong first pass i recommend 6010 rod at 85-95 amps it will still key hole but you will have alot mor metal on the back side and thats what counts when your doing high pressure piping (hydraulic pipe ,stainless steel pipe )or high stress structutral steel ///next grind your root down so its thin so on your h
Good question: I like a 15 to 20 degree upward push angle for the filler and cap passes. Usually I hold it directly out of the tip of the stinger. In practice you can drop your hands to almost a 30 degree angle, just make sure the tip of the rod isnt "toe nailing". The root pass is almost perpendicular with a slight push. 0-15 degrees.
