Hi there from Toowoomba Queensland Australia, I have watched your video many times, and love the way you use the bowlsaver. I have a bowlsaver but it only does up to a 10 inch bowl and also it does another one out of that one of 4 inches. it's good to see you not wasting timber. Desmond Shore.
WoW ! I've wasted alot of years not doing what I truly love .................you and a lot of others here on youtube have Inspired me to believe that it's never to late to find your passion, and to really enjoy life !!! Thank you ! If you don't use it you lose it ! Keep Turning !
I'm very happy with the Kel McNaughton Coring System. I find it to be easy to set up and use. I like the fact that you are not limited in the shape of the core like you are in some other systems.
Aaa,, ain't ya supposed to start cutting out the smallest bowl first, working your way from the center out? How did you hold onto the piece that you just cut out so that you can cut the rest of the bowls out? Seems like a lot of extra work doing it this way. I do love a woman that can run a machine and knows her way around a workshop! You wouldn't happen to be single would ya? [;-Þ
It depends on what I'm going after as to whether I start cutting the smallest or the largest bowl first. In this instance, I wanted to make sure I got the largest bowl out of the blank so I started with the outer core. Once you core out the first bowl, mount it on the lathe with the inside of the bowl against a jam chuck bring up the tailstock to secure it and turn a foot to mount into a scroll chuck and repeat the process.
Nice work I have the Kel McNaughton System also and its an older model where the cutting tips are a different grind from the new ones. The steel on mine don't seem to keep an edge for long. I am thinking of tempering them or soldering on some carbide tips. The best steel for scraping I have found believe or not are old craftsman carbon steel turning tools which I break out of their wood handles and attach the steel to my home made tool holders.
I guess you've figured this out, if you are still turning, but you start from the beginning & work outward & slow your cut down near the end. You are also pushing too hard on the knife & need to keep the cutter sharper LOL
Thanks for your comment and tips. The reason I start with the outer bowl is I want to guarantee I get the biggest bowls out of the blank. This is a tip I picked up from Mike Mahoney.

It will take a while to live that one down. Good manners would say you do NOT throw things at the person behind the camera.
