It's just an alternate take from the original sessions, obviously. Most notably the drum take is quite different, and guitars are louder in the mix during the verses.
There is no way this could be live. If you listen carefully (i.e. with phones) and compare to the original, you will notice the vocal, bass, rhythm guitar, piano and steel drum tracks are identical. If it were live, it wouldn't feature anything except what the boys could play themselves, as they never used live backing tracks when performing. There are several versions of this song floating around, in different stages of completion, and this is one of them. But yes, it IS dubbed over the video.
@ShaBiCaoNiMa close, but not entirely true. During their recent reunion tour, they used some backing light percussion tracks, such as in "King of Pain".

Thanks for blocking me just because someone asked you to do so. I was subbed to you, never had any problem, even posted the odd bit of positive feedback when I had the chance.
To me, this drum take is less Copelandy.. It's sort of bland.. Still hoppin' but more saccharine. Definitely miss the snare fill toward the end of the song!
amazing. I'm always blown away when I here any alternate mixes of any police tunes. very rare,. This is an obvious difference from the original in many ways. seems to be a bit more of "the police" mix before sting made it more his way....which is incredible as well.
Perhaps the mix on your record is the same. I can assure you that this mix and the original, from the 'Ghost In The Machine' album released in 1981, are different. Glad you dig it, anyway!

It's the best version anyway. It's listenability is superior to the other.
