To accept a persons claim they have good taste in music, they must seriously rate The Stone Roses. This is particularly the case in Australia where they are never played on commercial radio or on the Foxtel music channels (Max, V & MTV). I saw them play at the Metro in Melbourne in October 1995 and this was one of the most awesome concerts I have seen.

Maybe in New Zealand you're more hard pressed to getting new talent, but music to a large degree has always been about money and image, there has always been terrible pop artists around, it isn't just a modern phenomenon, but we always look at the past with rose tinted glasses because only the best music is remembered, look at a band called Arcade Fire, best band around atm imo

I grew up listening to the roses, the mondays, charlatans, and all things good from the late 80's to early 90's. At that time it felt like we were on the threshold of something special but in my mind it never transpired. Late 90's and onwards was just mass produced American influenced pish.

Today popular music is popular because of the massive funding granted to those musicians and the image they convey. E.g. Katy Perry and Lady Gaga have music video's of themselves barely naked on heavy rotation. I have to wait til late at night before good artists are played. (In my country anyway) Pop hip hop is terrible. Old school rap is really good. IMO.
