well, in odst; if you finish the campaign in legendary you get recon. But ONLY for firefight. In order to play with recon on Halo 3, you have to complete the vidmaster achievments

There are no spartans on 2423, the project started at 2491 which was "The Orion Project" aka SPARTAN I. John-117 was taken as a child to become a SPARTAN II super soldier.

Then The new odst's were recruited to be their next military, after odst they thawed out master chief cuz the war needed a spartan in order to win. then in halo 2 u meet arbiter and end up allies, H3 ur allied and fight for one purpose stop halos activation. simple.

There were a handful of spartans left after Reach, and the next group of Spartans were undergoing training (they are mentioned to be wearing the special ops "bubble" style helmet that is in Halo 3, but they mention it to be "stealth recon" armour. If you'd read the book s, you'd know why it looked like the Masterchief was "frozen". He was in cryo for traveling only.

Master chief is the only spartan left.(ODSTs are not spartans). I thought this was cool when I read Halo: the flood that on one page the chief kills a hunter and the hunter's brother yells chief then says to himself"serves you right, you lost one brother, i lost all of mine". pretty much he is saying all the spartans except him died out. The only reason the chief is still alive is because 1 he escaped on The pillar of autumn and 2 he is forerunner. so yeah

Had you read all of the books, the masterchief is NOT the only spartan left alive. There are other Spartan II's still alive that were considered MIA, who were trapped in various portions of space beyond the UNSC's control. There are also the "mysterious" recon type helmets (not the Halo 3 recon) that the "new" spartans wore.. the Spartan 3's.  One was mentioned in the last book.

It is in the halo universe, but does not follow master chief. Instead its about orbital drop shock troopers, ODST. And the reason its not called halo 4 is because it takes place after the third mission in halo 2. So its kinda like a prequal to halo 3. Get it?
