They were actually simple and easy to make and deploy but since there was still a little chivalry left in warfare they weren't used very often. Basically they were a small caliber cannon ball fitted with a primer and a pressure plate with a crude firing pin focused on the primer. Step on the plate, plate mashes against the primer, and BOOM! Makes you want to walk gently across the battlefield...
