As a researcher, the extra information which has been collected since the 19th century is invaluable in finding a person. Which John Smith was your ancestor? He was a bricklayer, and if this is on the census, it's a big help. I was surprised at how little information was requested, actually.

My local public school has been overcrowded for the past 30 years. There have been three censuses in that time and nothing has been done to alleviate the overcrowding. Instead, many apartment buildings have been built in the meantime and have exasperated the overcrowding. The same one bus line goes up and down the main street. Nothing has improved, but the intrusiveness has increased by census takers.

I have not been counted on a Census since 1980. Frankly I have no intention of allowing myself to counted. They tell you that they can't us the information against you. Some of the founders were alive during the 1800 census, that form also asked race (in the form of slave/nonslave), gender, age and even asked for one name.
The questions have changed to add clarification to these (i.e. slave/nonslave questions were changed to 2 questions about race and ethnicity) Just as back in the day this tell us military readiness and industrial capabilities.

There is no way for the IRS to use your census information against you, nor for your local government to check on whether you comply with zoning regulations. Your personal information is not shared with any law enforcement or government agency. Just last week, the DOJ issued a letter reaffirming that not even the Patriot Act can interfere with the Census Act's strong confidentiality protections.

For research purposes, the census data should include a little more than just "how many people live here". Demographic trends, age trends, language of the household, etc is also tracked by the census and I see nothing wrong with asking questions like that.
But things like address, whether or not you have a criminal record, etc I absolutely agree Dr. Paul is none of the business of the government.
What part of "not constitutionally authorized" do you not understand? All of this info was available for collection when the founders wrote the constitution, but they didn't think it should be collected, obviously. Maybe they had a good reason.
The Founding Fathers also included a little something called the 3/5ths rule in the Constitution. Simply because the Founding Fathers said it was the right way to do, doesn't make it the right way to go.

My local public school has been overcrowded for the past 30 years. There have been three censuses in that time and nothing has been done to alleviate the overcrowding. Instead, many apartment buildings have been built in the meantime and have exasperated the overcrowding. The same one bus line goes up and down the main street. Nothing has improved, but the intrusiveness has increased by census takers.

I have not been counted on a Census since 1980. Frankly I have no intention of allowing myself to counted. They tell you that they can't us the information against you. They say that today but tomorrow they can change there mind. The US government used the information from the 1940 Census to round up Italian, Japanese and German Americans in internment camps. So be smart don't trust government. Don't give them your info as once given you cant ever take it back.

For population purposes you might want to say your race. NYC is not full of WHITES and we should celebrate diversity! I received the long form. did not send it in. just had a visit from census worker. answered the questions on how many live here and simply calmly stated that I don't wish to answer the other questions. she thanked me, said I was very kind and patient, then left. personally I think she needs money and agrees with me. we can infiltrate government like this woman and lower the government's evil efficiency.

Some of the founders were alive during the 1800 census, that form also asked race (in the form of slave/nonslave), gender, age and even asked for one name.
The questions have changed to add clarification to these (i.e. slave/nonslave questions were changed to 2 questions about race and ethnicity) Just as back in the day this tell us military readiness and industrial capabilities.
If the founders thought the Census should be more than one question, who are you to say different?

Also you have the right under Public Law 93-579 to force them to fill out the lengthy and PERSONAL 3 page form the public Servants Questionaire available at They will have to sign that they will uphold the Constitution. They can't refuse or you don't have to answer them

Sorry guys, but I just accepted a job as a Census taker, purely for financial reasons. (Training starts next month.) They told me that I'm going to be fingerprinted, but that it will be purely confidential. I know it's probably hopeless to ask... but is that really true that it will be confidential? Point me to some historic evidence of that not being true, I plea. (I say it's probably hopeless, since these feds are the same group that lie about drugs, and, oh wait... everything imaginable.)

The framers of our Constitution ran the 1790 Census. It had 6 questions, one of which was how many slaves do you own. The question of if you have spent time in prison or a nursing home is incorrect. Ron Paul in this particular case is wrong and inflammatory.

You know what's funny about the $5k fine? They can't prove in court that you did or didn't fill out the form. Says so right on the insert: "Your answers cannot be used in court." And that is according to Title 13, United States Code, Section 9 and 214.

I believe that most forms will only have the standard 10 questions. (how many, what race, etc.) Other than that...it really IS none of the furcking (intentional spelling) government's business regarding income, toilets, shit like that.

I asked if they would withhold the birth Cert. and they said no. Moral of the story is you don't have to answer any questions to get a birth Cert. But they will try. Also I live in Ca.

Lets be clear: the personal information you give to the Census Bureau is shared with NO ONE. There is no way for the IRS to use your census information against you, nor for your local government to check on whether you comply with zoning regulations. Your personal information is not shared with any law enforcement or government agency. Just last week, the DOJ issued a letter reaffirming that not even the Patriot Act can interfere with the Census Act's strong confidentiality protections.

For research purposes, the census data should include a little more than just "how many people live here". Demographic trends, age trends, language of the household, etc is also tracked by the census and I see nothing wrong with asking questions like that.
But things like address, whether or not you have a criminal record, etc I absolutely agree Dr. Paul is none of the business of the government.

The Founding Fathers also included a little something called the 3/5ths rule in the Constitution. Simply because the Founding Fathers said it was the right way to do, doesn't make it the right way to go.
Now, Ron Paul, yourself and I (even as a Canadian) acknowledge the brilliance of the Constitution, especially for its time, in protecting individual liberty and providing a framework for government. However, strict constitutionalism is naive of history and in principle. I'll explain further.

If you were to abide by an absolutely strict interpretation of the Constitution, then give Midwest America all the way down to the Louisiana coast back to the French. Why would I say this? Because Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase without the authorization of Congress, against the Constitution. Doesn't that proposal sound absurd though? Being an absolutist about any idea or document is self defeating. Ultimately you have to use logic, morality and fact to defend your argument.

According to you, strictly following ANY idea is self defeating: so i suppose one should not use logic, morality and fact to defend one's argument - if one doesn't feel like it... and it would be considered by you to be just as valid. Jefferson DOES NOT get a "free pass" because he is Jefferson. The fact that the Purchase was wrong does not negate the Constitution, nor the moral purpose of government (defense of personal Liberty) which it was structured to defend.

Fact is not an idea. Written down, undeniable truths are not ideas, they are simply facts. Same with the PRINCIPLES of logic and ethics.
I don't see how any sane person could disagree with you that there is a moral purpose of government to defend personal liberty. Although an absolutely strict following of the Constitution is not required for that. In fact, it can sometimes inhibit it. Take the 3/5ths rule, or in Canada, the notwithstanding clause in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I agree with you much.... IMO, you are a good thinker, and understand a lot about Liberty, Morality, and Reason. BUT there is a minute difference which makes us miles apart in some regards: I believe the defense of personal Liberty is not "a moral purpose of government", rather that it IS THE ONLY moral purpose of government. (BTW - US Supreme Court is for measuring Laws against the Standards of the Constitution.

@BloggerMusicMan, For research purposes? What they're gonna do with all the information they got anyway, use it to fund the local governments. When in fact our Federal government is in debt-bed for 12 Trillion Dollars? If the research is true, isn't that a "Marketing" program, especially for private corporations? I see nothing wrong being asked or mailed by private businessess, because it is Not mandatory; unless they are Not working for the government, that make such coercion and evasive acts!
