@jumpinghoodoo Hi Koen, thanks for your great comments. This recording was work in progress. I developed a couple of the riffs into a finished song called "We're Leaving Here Together". There's a video of it on my channel or search using the song title. Let me know what you think. Thanks for watching out for the book. It should be finished next year. Seasons greetings Lee
Like the comparisons you made on your other post above, which I skilfully managed to delete. The tune does morph I suppose and I like the Howlin' Wolf to Fiddle analogy.
1) I play custom harps by Wes Weston. I have no idea what he does to them. They are reasonably priced so I don't believe the customisation is as extensive as say a Filisko or Sleigh. But he does accept orders! Check him out on My Space, he has a page there.
2) I use both sides and also puckering here and there.
Thanks for all the info. Yes, I did mean harp orientation but it's interesting to hear of your embouchure approach. I came upon your vids from a HarpL post from yesterday.
Glad you liked it. I haven't toured for a few years now, so it's unlikely I'll be gigging up there any time soon. Basically I do the occasional gig in London. Thanks for the offer of a place to stay though. The UK scene is hard so I think bands often don't have accommodation included in their deal with venues.
Fantastic man! Way cool how you keep the backbeat pumping with the tongueblocks, and there's of course the phenomenal tone and the lowdown chops! There's also this part, I don't know how to describe it, like you turn it around and the melody is suddenly on the backbeat? You do it a couple of times, for instance on 2.15. Great stuff, thanks for posting this!!
Thanx....its amazing how good you sound unplugged! This is my first pc and I'm trying to figure it all out as I have no access to an empty room like yours...
Thanks. Hopefully the big tone comes from me and not the room :-) I recorded this on a video camera and then transfered to a MAC. The video camera may have a better MIC than a built in one found on a MAC or PC. This in turn would help capture the sound, exposing a weak tone or highlighting a good one :-)
No man, I have a 7 foot ceiling....you are in a nice empty room with a high ceiling and I'm sure thats what makes it all happen! You are spot-on tho about amplification and thanx for pointing that out....its only this INTERNET stuff that is a problem for me!
Bathrooms are great for great acoustic playing, even small ones... best to remove all towels and rugs, open the shower stall, etc.... and lock the door to keep out intruders !
You also raise one of the common misconceptions about harmonica playing "plugged in". The big, warm sound we all strive for comes from the acoustic tone and not the amp. Amps make things louder. Rubbish in, louder rubbish out. The open space of where I made the recording definitely adds some reverb though. Check out my video called "Workin'", I think the room is pretty neutral, may be you can see a difference.
Adam Gussow's great YouTube channel probably has a lesson on this subject.
the hip movement is epic.

Hey Mr Sankey,
There some nice riffs in this song!
Some licks are too quick for me to analyze... but I am learning a lot of it.
Cant wait for your book! When is it for sale?
Greats from holland

Two questions:
What have you done to customize your harmonicas? (ie embossing, gapping, etc)
Do you actually play with the hole 1 to the right rather than to the left?
Thanks.

Just realised I might have misunderstood your second question. I play upside down. The 1 hole is to my right.
