I suppose Kubrick might seem a bit cruel for putting Shelley Duval through 127 takes like that...but ofcourse, a typical Hollywood director would've just fired her and replaced her with someone else. Kubrick stuck with it till she delivered the goods.

This movie is the best movie of the world, trash is boring. Great music, great cut, great actors, great director, great sreen, great hotel, great steadicam, great camera, great film. You can't understand this scene as a single scene. You must put it to the whole movie. But this scene has power. Stanley Kubrick is the best movie maker.

Its a very psychological film, like Jaws. Jaws had special effects, but the damn shark never worked, but worked to the films favor. This has to be the best acted and filmed horror film ever. In my opinion Nicholson's best performance.

@WoolyOmpus Great point! Gore is a crutch used in horror movies when the creators fail to think of anything scary. Think about it. In 2 hours and 26 minutes, there is exactly one one screen killing, yet this is one of the scariest movies of all time. Much scarier than many movies with much higher death tolls. "The Shining" is pure psychological terror at its best. Maybe the thing that sums it up is that Stanley Kubrick create the scariest scene of all time with three children and a tricycle!

Nah he's just great at playing nutters! If you see some of his oscar speeches etc. he comes across as a really well spoken and nice guy. There are actors who are just good at playing nutters: Nicholson, Dennis Hopper, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Sinise etc.
