Great! They are pretty rare in the US still; everyone asks us what our dear Nina is (she's 10 mos. old). She is an absolutely amazingly sweet, smart, funny, athletic dog. We are thinking of training her for a therapy dog, because she's so gentle and loves people!

I have a flat coat. Mine was the runt of the litter. She's three years old and she still looks like a five maybe six month old puppy. These dogs are the sweetest. But mine doesn't know how to shut up at times, I still love her to death though.

Best breed ever. No doubt about it. Had a couple of irish setters, a new foundland, a cavalier king charles spaniel but the flat coated retriever is the only one I'll forever miss. She's in my heart forever...

I love flat-coated retrievers. I also like field-bred golden retrievers, which look like flat-coated retrievers, just they are red or yellow. If you look at the original golden retrievers, and compare them with flatties, you'll find similarities. In fact, golden retrievers were considered a type of flat-coated or wavy coated retriever. Strangely, flat-coats were called wavy-coats. This fell out of favor in the ring, but Golden retrievers allow for wavy coats.

Whoa there! Yellow or red? Like a lab or setter? I have a field bred golden who is wavy, but she is not red or yellow, she is golden. I agree with you, I like them too. I have not met many flat coats though.

Golden is a genetic red to yellow gene. It's the same gene with a dilution factor. Yellow labs and Irish setters are the same color, but with a different dilution gene. "White" golden retrievers have the red/yellow gene with an extreme amount of the dilution gene. Golden retrievers have both the wavy and flat-coated types which were found in ancestral wavy and flat-coated retrievers.

In terms of behavior field-bred goldens and every flat-coat I have met are very highly driven dogs. Usually they have good temperaments and are biddable (although exuberant) working dogs. However, they aren't laid back the way that the show golden retrievers are. They are almost like a different breed.
