there are no words to describe the brilliance of this show. to fuse comedy with poignancy so fluidly that you just feel like you're watching life, the beauty and sadness of life--is genius; and this scene perfectly encapsulates this genius.
You know you're watching great T.V when the show that 90% of the time makes you laugh can also make you cry, this and the final episode were masterpieces, the only thing I've personally seen similar to this otherwise is the Extras xmas special and the Sherlock Holmes sketch in 'That Mitchell and Webb Look', 'comedy' writers like these make me proud to be British. :)
His character is such that even if he's given another chance, he will go back doing what he did and the proof is his last statement. He will not change because, like Michael, he's too addicted to the life he has. The attention he forces out of people to meet his ego demands. I had a boss almost exactly like this. To this day I don't know what he did other than counting the $ twice a week.
This scene and the speech from the Christmas special of 'Extras' (in The Big Brother House) really make me realise what an incredible actor Ricky Gervais is. It's amazing that a character you've been encouraged to dislike for so long can suddenly change within a minute. A true sign of brilliant acting and writing.
This dude plays this character so brilliantly I actually beleive the part he plays and hate the shit out of him, I have to keep reminding myself it's just an act but his
character reminds me of a few assholes I know in real life. Respect.
The acting by Gervais here is out of this world. I almost forget I'm watching a mockumentary and feel like I'm actually seeing a real person lose his job. The way his voice quivers... he avoids eye contact... eyes glazing over... man it's incredible!
It's amazing how these two shows share the same name yet are totally different. The UK version has more merit than the US version - and will stand the test of time a lot more - but the US version isn't bad.
It's just aiming for a more generic sitcom audience and therefore can't carry the same weight of drama compared to the much rawer UK Office.
I loved this scene because it totally humanised David Brent and made him more than the irritating jerk he'd been portrayed as from the beginning of the series. He suddenly became a man whose existence clearly revolved completely around his job, and his breakdown was not only heart-breaking but utterly believable.
Is that right? I'm thinking the majority of the people agreeing with your comment are from the UK. Just a guess, of course. I'm from la and have many friends who are actors and actresses. They all agree that the US version trumps the UK version in every way. Thanks for the idea, by the way. I just recently started watching the Office, as I'm not a big tv watcher; but based on the clips I've seen, our version is funnier. I suppose it all depends on where you're from.
Christ, that whole scene is brilliant. It's like he slowly draws you in with this sad little man's most humiliating moment, then kicks you in the nose with that Dolly Parton line. lmao
Ricky is brilliant as David Brent and shows another vulnerable side to his character. Never did like slimy Neil (and in the last series the board voted 5 to 2 in favour of Brent having top job too - until his medical!)
This moment is so epic, D Brent has never made it known that he has a serious side for the 2 seasons, never did he leave home without the humour defence mechanism and when he does....oh mah gawd the emotion. 11/10.
I was really surprised when I saw this, as most comedians can't act worth a shit (just look at Jerry Seinfeldm, urg!). But this scene proves what an amazing actor Gervais is.
The whole raison D'etre of the show was the slow painful descent of David Brent made redundant in this scene, this is the climax. and I'm american and a fan both the orginal and US office shows.
Gervais deserved every award he got - this series was so well written and the heart-felt acting by Gervais in this 'redundancy scene' is world class! the full range of emotions are tapped into with this once-in-a-lifetime comedy of incomparable brilliance! and it'll great that not everybody can appreciate the humour and it's subtle finesse - that would make it too common.
It's timeless - generations to come will be blown away by this series - absolute gem of a series!

You're absolutely right Yet. That's it. After all he's done and the thousands he's cost the company by rarely working, he wants another chance. I've since watched the episode of The Office in the American version and I'm yelling, "get rid of him. Don't listen!" No one wants them for a boss and no one respects them but they will use any emotion to get what they want. They really do know they are losers and have no life outside their offices.
This is the genius of Gervais, he writes stuff that makes you laugh out loud, makes you cringe as you hear yourself saying the same stupid things - then turns it all back on you with a scene like this. Making you uncomfortable is his trademark.
RG was just excellent in this bit. The thing is with characters like this is that their basic nature doesn't change no matter what they say. I deal with kids like this all the time. They are sorry they get caught but it is a tool to beg and plead to get out of any trouble they are in. It's just a stop gap. They just hope you will fall for it. Not all but a lot. This boss was a young boss or he would know this guy should have been let go for the good of the company. As much as it hurts.
He's knows he's nothing without this job. No where else will tollerate him and he knows it. No where else will he abuse the little bit of power he has and get away with it as much as he had in this office. I haven't seen the Office in the US where MIchael gets fired but sure would like to. I;ve heard people say of someone, "every word out of their mouth is a lie" and I've thought, "there is no one like that" but these writers prove that true with the D and M characters. Almost always. lol
Do you know which philosopher said that? Dolly Parton. And people say "She is just a big pair of tits". LMAO nothing beats the original and best Office.
this is so sad. i felt so bad when i saw this. like u kno in forrest gump when his girlfriend dies, is pretty sad, but its laughter compared to brent loosing his job
@magicbibledotcom he is a brilliant actor for sure but i respectfully disagree with you regarding real acting classes. talent by itself is merely not enough, one needs a relentless work ethic and the ability to be brutally honest with oneself. i've seen people with a lot of potential in the first day of class and they've grown exponentially in just a few months time. i would agree though that bad acting classes will cause skills to regress.
every time he says something to the camera at the end he makes funny eye contact.. or when he says to niel 'yep, see you there..... with a ladyyyy' , the way he looks at him is pure poetry.

I suggest you look up the word racist before mis-using a word you clearly don't know the meaning of, you fucking prat. What I said in my previous post is absolutely true. Take off your rose tinted glasses and see the world for what it is, as opposed to wanton knee jerk reactions. Not very bright are we?
... And you my friend, have a very limited vocabulary. Correction, it's tall, dark and handsome motherfucker. Keep on amusing me, you're doing a good job.

Clearly you're a racist ignoramus.
"White people"?
Idiot. F*cking idiot....

I suggest you look up the word racist before mis-using a word you clearly don't know the meaning of, you fucking prat. What I said in my previous post is absolutely true. Take off your rose tinted glasses and see the world for what it is, as opposed to wanton knee jerk reactions. Not very bright are we?

We?
Speak for yourself, Ezekiel - I'm as bright as a button.

If you were bright, you would deduce that I used the word "we" figuratively, so I can only assume that you're not as bright as you thought you were.

I told my brother that and he started throwing Twiglets at me. I now live by the Railroad tracks... thanks to you.
