  • Lol @ Brent feigning disinterest by whistling

  • there are no words to describe the brilliance of this show. to fuse comedy with poignancy so fluidly that you just feel like you're watching life, the beauty and sadness of life--is genius; and this scene perfectly encapsulates this genius.

  • I'm not going to lie. I had tears in my eyes :'(

  • A master class in true acting genius... What a hero. "Just a big pair of tits..." Epic.

  • You know you're watching great T.V when the show that 90% of the time makes you laugh can also make you cry, this and the final episode were masterpieces, the only thing I've personally seen similar to this otherwise is the Extras xmas special and the Sherlock Holmes sketch in 'That Mitchell and Webb Look', 'comedy' writers like these make me proud to be British. :)

  • It's heartbreaking, this scene.

  • A master stroke. Each moment is being grasped for.

  • Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are geniuses. With Karl Pilkington being a very misunderstood savant

  • His character is such that even if he's given another chance, he will go back doing what he did and the proof is his last statement. He will not change because, like Michael, he's too addicted to the life he has. The attention he forces out of people to meet his ego demands. I had a boss almost exactly like this. To this day I don't know what he did other than counting the $ twice a week.

  • This scene and the speech from the Christmas special of 'Extras' (in The Big Brother House) really make me realise what an incredible actor Ricky Gervais is. It's amazing that a character you've been encouraged to dislike for so long can suddenly change within a minute. A true sign of brilliant acting and writing.

  • This dude plays this character so brilliantly I actually beleive the part he plays and hate the shit out of him, I have to keep reminding myself it's just an act but his

character reminds me of a few assholes I know in real life. Respect.

  • Ricky Gervais is so hilarious, I often forget what a talented actor he is as well.

  • the wheels are already in motion,,no well stop them,,,,bless

  • This is so, so sad.

  • i cried when i first saw this :/ and maybe a little this time watching it...

  • Kinda feel like this right now ... was made redundant today after 5 years U_U

  • Looks so realistic it is almost uncomfortable.

  • 5 people were made redundant.

  • This and his speech to Maggie on big brother at the end of Extras are where Ricky's talent really shines.

It can bring tears to your eyes.

  • 0:11 wow... that chokes me.

  • Consider that he never went to any kind of acting or drama school as well..

    Just talent.

  • fantastic acting.

  • there are a lot of british terms i am not aware of but what does "made redundant," mean?

  • @B0S0X09 Basically to lose your job.

  • @B0S0X09 you sent this comment two weeks ago asking what "made redundant" means. it pretty much means to fire someone. its similar to our lay offs.

  • absolutely great performance

  • ricky's face is like a palette of emotions! brilliant

  • This is gotta be one of his best acting performances ever.

  • The acting by Gervais here is out of this world. I almost forget I'm watching a mockumentary and feel like I'm actually seeing a real person lose his job. The way his voice quivers... he avoids eye contact... eyes glazing over... man it's incredible!

  • My favorite scene from the original Office. Ricky Gervais is a genius.

  • Nothing chokes me like this. Every time.

  • dolly parton the philosopher lolllll

  • It's amazing how these two shows share the same name yet are totally different. The UK version has more merit than the US version - and will stand the test of time a lot more - but the US version isn't bad.

It's just aiming for a more generic sitcom audience and therefore can't carry the same weight of drama compared to the much rawer UK Office.

  • I loved this scene because it totally humanised David Brent and made him more than the irritating jerk he'd been portrayed as from the beginning of the series. He suddenly became a man whose existence clearly revolved completely around his job, and his breakdown was not only heart-breaking but utterly believable.

  • i honestly think this is the single best piece of acting ever. its so honest.

  • the single clip which explains why the uk office will always be superior to the US office.

  • @doza2112

Is that right? I'm thinking the majority of the people agreeing with your comment are from the UK. Just a guess, of course. I'm from la and have many friends who are actors and actresses. They all agree that the US version trumps the UK version in every way. Thanks for the idea, by the way. I just recently started watching the Office, as I'm not a big tv watcher; but based on the clips I've seen, our version is funnier. I suppose it all depends on where you're from.

  • This whole scene is the best metaphor for life I've seen.

  • Oscar winning performance, brilliant.

  • what an actor.

  • This is The Office's equivalent of John 3:16; if the entire series could be boiled down to a single scene (which it can't), this would be it.

  • @claesgrufman jesus

  • to be a lazy bastard in a job you also have to be competent and brent was obviously not

  • You really want to feel bad for him here but then you also remember that he's just SUCH a jerk. Gervais is so brilliant in this scene.

  • Fucking good.

I'd hate to have a boss like Brent, in any job. I spent the whole series' waiting for him to get sacked, and I bloody relished it.

  • Christ, that whole scene is brilliant. It's like he slowly draws you in with this sad little man's most humiliating moment, then kicks you in the nose with that Dolly Parton line. lmao

  • daid brent should have realised that to be lazy in your job you also have to be competent.

  • Seinfeld is the king of comedies!

  • Ricky is brilliant as David Brent and shows another vulnerable side to his character. Never did like slimy Neil (and in the last series the board voted 5 to 2 in favour of Brent having top job too - until his medical!)

  • Amazing performance, amazing man. That part really got to me.

  • Makes wanna hug him. so sad.

  • Fantastic, only time it's been topped is in the extras christmas special I think

  • That is some brilliant acting right there.

  • Excellent acting! Gervais is the king!

  • he makes u feel sorry for him, then he brings it back with the dolly joke.. lovely

  • and people say she's just a big pair of tits :D

  • This moment is so epic, D Brent has never made it known that he has a serious side for the 2 seasons, never did he leave home without the humour defence mechanism and when he does....oh mah gawd the emotion. 11/10.

  • Are you an idiot? Sure she felt sorry for him, but she didn't act on it.

  • This is the best piece of acting I've ever seen.

  • One of the best actors on tele.

  • The most marvellous piece of acting.

  • Stitchup. It was a stitchup.

  • i cried watching this

  • Every second of The Office was a masterpiece.

I can't fault any of it.

  • The line between comedy and tragedyis almost invisable.

  • Ah I do miss the office.

  • criiiiiiiiiiiiiiinge

  • That guy(Not Ricky Gervais) played a kiddie fiddler on Casualty the other night.

  • He is a hell of an actor.

  • I was really surprised when I saw this, as most comedians can't act worth a shit (just look at Jerry Seinfeldm, urg!). But this scene proves what an amazing actor Gervais is.

  • jerry seinfeld is ok. seinfeld was a lot more goofy than the Office, of course.

  • They say the best comedies are the ones that can make you feel sad.

  • @visitplanetmike who says that?

  • @visitplanetmike That's so true.

  • I think this is some of the best behavioural acting on film ive ever seen.

  • The whole raison D'etre of the show was the slow painful descent of David Brent made redundant in this scene, this is the climax. and I'm american and a fan both the orginal and US office shows.

  • straight to the point. love brents acting

  • /Ricky's acting.

  • Gervais deserved every award he got - this series was so well written and the heart-felt acting by Gervais in this 'redundancy scene' is world class! the full range of emotions are tapped into with this once-in-a-lifetime comedy of incomparable brilliance! and it'll great that not everybody can appreciate the humour and it's subtle finesse - that would make it too common.

It's timeless - generations to come will be blown away by this series - absolute gem of a series!

  • the u.s office is awfull!! there is no fault with gervais or any acting in the office at all, it is how the show is supposed to come across..

  • Very funny stuff yet ths is great acting by Gervais, you feel so sorry for him, it's very realistic acting in this scene. Brilliant.

  • Anyone watching this can honestly say that the US version is even on the same planet with this one?

  • Magic

  • I feel so sorry for him here.

  • so did he get fired?

  • Brilliant writing, brilliant acting. Sums up The Office really: just brilliant.

  • hahahaha hard hittin shit rg is legend

  • how brilliant!

and "peaks and troughs" it's so true

  • love this...well done Rick

  • This is the genius of Gervais, he writes stuff that makes you laugh out loud, makes you cringe as you hear yourself saying the same stupid things - then turns it all back on you with a scene like this. Making you uncomfortable is his trademark.

  • 12 episodes turning you against him all undone in a single moment.

  • @CopernicusSmith So right. It's simply the most brilliant moment of the series. Didn't see it coming…

  • @CopernicusSmith Very well said.

  • @CopernicusSmith Great comment. (Although I was never against David Brent..)

  • RG was just excellent in this bit. The thing is with characters like this is that their basic nature doesn't change no matter what they say. I deal with kids like this all the time. They are sorry they get caught but it is a tool to beg and plead to get out of any trouble they are in. It's just a stop gap. They just hope you will fall for it. Not all but a lot. This boss was a young boss or he would know this guy should have been let go for the good of the company. As much as it hurts.

  • He's knows he's nothing without this job. No where else will tollerate him and he knows it. No where else will he abuse the little bit of power he has and get away with it as much as he had in this office. I haven't seen the Office in the US where MIchael gets fired but sure would like to. I;ve heard people say of someone, "every word out of their mouth is a lie" and I've thought, "there is no one like that" but these writers prove that true with the D and M characters. Almost always. lol

  • jennifer is very sexy

  • great acting.....a side if Ricky Gervais we hadn't seen before......top stuff.

  • rare showing of genuine emotion from david brent

  • ths series is really hard... what a scene... to be able to bring sympathy for a guy David Brent.

  • i nearly cried at this scene

  • Do you know which philosopher said that? Dolly Parton. And people say "She is just a big pair of tits". LMAO nothing beats the original and best Office.

  • lmfao

  • There's hope for Brent.

  • brilliant how he cracks from being a cocky smart ars. great contrast

  • What an amazing talent. Hard to believe he had no acting experience before the Office.

  • this is so sad. i felt so bad when i saw this. like u kno in forrest gump when his girlfriend dies, is pretty sad, but its laughter compared to brent loosing his job

  • Great scene. David Brent finally drops his guard and exposes the scared, insecure man hiding inside. Brilliant writing and acting by Mr Gervais

  • Moving scene, he finally realizes he has been counterproductive and inconsiderate, but he doesn't yet really regret it, after all he is David Brent

  • man.. rips your heart out to see this..

who would've thought we'd feel empathy for David..

  • This scene shows he can act outside of the comedy scene

  • Such brilliant acting.

I think this proves and he has proved that acting classes really aren't effective and you can either do it or you can't lol.

As he didn't have any but is a brilliant actor.

  • couldn't agree with you more. well said.

  • @magicbibledotcom he is a brilliant actor for sure but i respectfully disagree with you regarding real acting classes. talent by itself is merely not enough, one needs a relentless work ethic and the ability to be brutally honest with oneself. i've seen people with a lot of potential in the first day of class and they've grown exponentially in just a few months time. i would agree though that bad acting classes will cause skills to regress.

  • "the wheels already in motion" "well stop them"

  • This scene hurts. I mean, begging for his job back, and the voice, on the verge of crying, it's perfect. So embarassing.

Thank you, Ricky, for The Office.

  • the best show ever, respect David Brent !

  • The funniest moment in the officer ever.

  • every time he says something to the camera at the end he makes funny eye contact.. or when he says to niel 'yep, see you there..... with a ladyyyy' , the way he looks at him is pure poetry.

  • two for ten pounds, yes please, four.

  • What a performance... love this. terrible, wonderful.

  • this really touched me

  • i love that he quotes dolly parton. i used that as grade 12 year book quote. she is amazing. and that quote is so true. perfect to sum up any ending.

  • I still love that one of the funniest shows ever on television was also one of the most moving.. This scene as well as the scene from the christmas special with Tim and Dawn at the end always get me a little choked up.

  • how can people say he isn't a good actor? this made mereally want him to keep his job

  • Brillant acting from Ricky. One of a kind scene in The Office that really gets you. And of course, I fell in love with Jennifer, didn't see jan thought.

  • It's one of the things about The Office UK that makes it so good. They throw in the odd moment of pure human drama amidst the general buffoonery.Great stuff

  • the only thing better with the us version is that jan is hotter than jennifer

  • not seen her on the US version, but jennifer is well sexy :-)

  • He is such a good actor

  • is he having a laugh?

  • haha "Is he Avin a laugh??"

  • get out

  • LMFAO

  • Ricky Gervais is certainly my favourite comedy actor of all time. My own opinion, however. I've seen plenty of comedies and have quite a collection of different comedy dvd's at home - easy 50 plus. I can't think of a better actor though. The big brother scene in extras stands out to me.

  • i agree that BB thiing was good acting but i just hated how seriously that episode took itself. it wasn't as subtle as this sorta stuff. i think by then shit had gone to his head. this office scene is just class

  • emachines34

hahahaha nice.. u showed that ezekielthemack!!

    he's a fuckin douchebag

  • would of been very easy to OVERACT here - but of course he doesn't. absolute genius!!!

  • I agree....in fact what makes this scene so great are the little things, like the subtle gulp to keep from crying etc....

    I love this show....brilliant.

  • Ricky Gervais is the best comic actor of all time. This scene shows that he can be serious. It's really sad.

  • these popularity poles are all based on the current 'thing' - bollocks. Have you ever voted for what/who's the best blah blah blah?

    Me neither!

  • this part is so amazing, he suddenly lets down his guard after all this time

  • Ricky Gervais is such A GOOD ACTOR!!

He has created two masterpieces in Extras and The Office.

One of british comedies all time greats, WITHOUT A DOUBT!!

  • agreed. i love everything he's in!!

  • I cant believe you even replied to that. I bet you just love "online arguements". I can tell you're the confrontational sort.

    Do you like peas?

  • white people? I`m sure everyone would react to it the same way.

  • Clearly you're a racist ignoramus.

    "White people"?

    Idiot. F*cking idiot....

  • I suggest you look up the word racist before mis-using a word you clearly don't know the meaning of, you fucking prat. What I said in my previous post is absolutely true. Take off your rose tinted glasses and see the world for what it is, as opposed to wanton knee jerk reactions. Not very bright are we?

  • We?

Speak for yourself, Ezekiel - I'm as bright as a button.

  • If you were bright, you would deduce that I used the word "we" figuratively, so I can only assume that you're not as bright as you thought you were.

  • I told my brother that and he started throwing Twiglets at me. I now live by the Railroad tracks... thanks to you.

  • Stay of the drugs.

  • your a motherfucker

  • ... And you my friend, have a very limited vocabulary. Correction, it's tall, dark and handsome motherfucker. Keep on amusing me, you're doing a good job.

  • your a testicle

  • And you can't spell you chav cunt. The word is "you're" not "your" you prat. Go to school - again.

  • fuck you motherfucker, its the internet, i can type how i want as long as it is comprehensible. And I am not a chav.

  • You may not be a chav, but frigging well sound like one. Go and get educated you sad cunt.
