Boris rocks! @jwa718, this version would be re-recorded with Skip Moore on the drums and released in June 1960. But this version was recorded sometime in 1959. George Babbitt was only 17, so he was too young to play the clubs (Bob & Don were 25) George would go on to have a highly prolific USAF career, he would retire a full General.
~What'th, strangely spookie interview by UK/USA actor- Boris'Karloff, --when the Ventures were oddly trying to compete with the relatively crappy Beatles..!!
@AryanKnight They were not so much competing as writing instrumentals of the Beatles, then releasing the tune a week or two prior to the vocal...kinda pissed some artists off but this is the ventures success... thanks for the comment!
As a young guitar player this song just ruined me forever! Drove my parents crazy playing it as loud as I could over and over and over again until literally wearing it out. Air guitar hadn't yet been invented but I think I was an originator! 52 years later this is STILL one of my all time favorite guitar recordings ever!
Thanks for posting----love Boris too----what a character he was in his own right!
Great collection of Ventures music! They were not only popular in the west, but equally popular in the far east. Back in the day, Radio Ceylon (Now Sri Lanka Broadcasting corporation - SLBC), Asia's first radio station, regularly featured Ventures's hits and they were played by all Ceylonese bands at weddings, parties etc. Today we have a Facebook group with over 900 members from all over the world celebrating Radio Ceylon's music, and Ventures are a regular feature of the page!!
@stupullen :) Yes! Don't get me wrong - I love Boris Karloff and the Ventures. It just represents some sort of cataclysm to find them both in the same video. (Cliffs comment made me laugh :) )
@deirnoel I do that once in a while to show i do have a since of humor ,Thank you for the comments and if you have some time visit my other uploads...have a good one!
What an experience this is to hear their '59 recording of the song, although it wouldn't become a big hit until a year later. And, yes, that was Boris Karloff from 1967 at the start. He died two years later.
@carmelo08 Okay...the first section (interview) done by Boris Karloff, with bob & Don in 1967, when the music kicks in, that is the original "walk-Don't run" of 1959 ...this is also explained in the description.
It wouldn't matter what shape it is in, just look for the January 1967 RD "Twang the sound of the guitar"...i plan to search for this my self when I have spare time!
Thanks! I had not thought about the old Karlof interviews in so long. Dr Demento used to have access to these somehow. Wow I was in grade school and used to DX the good Dr's show in from California and then they finally syndicated it, then I had to DX again.
@Satchmoeddie Agreed ... I believe that is exactly where I heard the Karloff stuff many years ago, Dr. "D" had access to many things amazing back in the day
@kimbolle Awesome! your Aunt Josie was a heck of a gal and deserves the reverence of greatness to The Ventures and fans alike...those were the only pics i could find :-))
Hi Stu, thanks this historical post. I remember when I heard The Ventures for the first time. I was in love with the electric guitar sounds and thought that even a Truetone, Silvertone, or Airline guitar was the coolest thing in the world. Early sounds that remain in my mind were from a song called HOME. That tremolo on the Fender Jazzmaster was unbeatable. The younger years of revelations about electric guitars and Fender amps. Thanks again, this is my world too!!
WOW! You Did An Outstanding Job Uploading These Ultrar Rare VeNtuReS' Tracks!! I favored this, of course. And- I am looking forward to your next "unreleased" VeNtuRes' Upload(s)!! Thank you Brother Stu and God Bless!!
Thanks for sharing Stu! a treat to all instrumental rock lovers.
Wikipedia says "Their music has been cited by many guitarists as an influence; their virtuosity, experimentation with guitar effects, and unique sound laid the groundwork for innumerable groups, earning them the moniker "The Band that Launched a Thousand Bands"." So this is The Original Song that Launched a Thousand Bands :o)#
That's a great montage, very well done! This version is very cool and historically interesting to hear. I can see why it was rejected in favorof thea less swinging more straight ahead rock version. I think it's great that Don released these recordings to Del, their official biographer, last year.
@stupullen Wow, I never heard of a single with this different version. Was it on Blue Horizon? It's interesting that there is a third guitar on the track.
Wow...so nice of you to send the mail and put up this video. didn't know it went back so far. i bought the album they mentioned i think it was "play guitar with the ventures" it had a gatefold cover and pages of instructions. my mom built me an amplifier from one of those home kits and bought me a sears silvertone guitar and i was off and playing. that was very cool music for the time period indeed. thanks again stupullen.
It's absolutely awesome, Stu. It's a very rare sound jewel garnished with Karloff's interview. You have surpassed yourself. Thanks for sharing. Is there another upcoming surprise ??
This was really cool to go back that far with the Ventures and an interview with the monster movie man Boris !!! Thanks for posting , this is a real treasure !!! John Leon
