I always make sure to pull it out all the way before turning the vacuum on for long duties, if it's a short one, i'll leave it coiled. Damn, what a fire hazard! A smokey mess!
Yay! NZ won the RWC! Great video, that is one sh*tload of smoke there! Some plastics smell like wax (particularly black), some smell so bad you almost vomit and others are just weird. Seeing that you have smelt quite a range of plastic, what do you have to say about that?
@RODALCO2007 I agree. The French had more territory and deserved to win but the All Blacks held the defense very well till the last minutes. I hate PVC fumes, horrible stuff.
I wonder how bad electrolytic and PCB fumes are. Can't imagine they are too good. You can smell how weird it is when you apply 4,000 volts and a couple amps to a PCB.
Yep, there's a lot of smoke right there! Towards the end, the smoke starts to get bit of a yellow-ish look to it.
Quite a smoker, this one. I have always wanted to know how they wound the wire back into those coil-up vacs. Now I know! They coil the wire around the motor! So I do wonder what would happen to a vac, if only just enough wire was pulled out to connect it into an extension cord, and then the vac was started up. Probably, this would happen, or the motor would go....*POP*
heh, when running our vacuum cleaner the cord gets mildly warm, not too hot to touch, but you can tell its getting warm. and the same with our coffee maker, and our electric griddle.
No wonder they put temperature circuit breakers on those coiled extension cords. That is a crazy amount of smoke, never thought that it can be that bad.
No, just a normal resistive one with a copper "resistor". Since the blue wire is coiled in the opposite direction to the brown one (from the point of current flow), they cancel themselves out. No induction there!
Was the melting PVC insulation smell the one that smelled almost like dead animals? (I had a device that melted it's power cables internally and I almost had to puke when I opened it because of the smell)
@superdau PVC smoke contains significant amounts of hydrogen chloride; the smell reminds me of the Works (which also contains the same, dissolved in water as hydrochloric acid), and is just as corrosive. Though it is much worse if it got hot enough to catch fire (not experienced this but things like dioxins form).

hey i notice your van; i used to work for you guys back in 2005 to 06! first on TLS then moved over to the springhill project. it broke me :-) that was a long time ago though, i work for people you shop with now.
keep up the good vids man. it's like the NZ version of photonic :-)
Haha good one. Every vacuum cleaner we have has burnt out so i could'nt get the motors to work. What do your naubours think? do they know what your doing?
That would have made a nice extension cord that neatly winds up. But without an earth on it I guess not. The smoke bomb was well worth it :)
itsdglad4 1 month ago
@itsdglad4 Yes but only for a lamp. Current rating 7 Amp max. as it heats up rapidly over that current, and as you said, no earth.

@a380rockerfan Thank you. All Blacks did well. still a very tough game, The french actually played more organized.
I don't like the PVC fumes and try to avoid them.
still I get the odd wiff of it which is not nice.

Wow. I'd say, from a normal function none should have their cord warmed up like that. Sounds like a bit too much current.

You really need a smoke extractor, so the action can be seen in progress. :)
