I want a powerhorse laptop. I'm willing to take on the extra weight. It's not like I'm an old granny who can't life a measly few pounds. This is the laptop for wimps.
yes the wide screen bezel does spoil the design andban make thinner and lighter models but they wont let you have one till theyve sold you this one first .. of course,, theyve probably got a folding one with twooweeks battery life and a solidstate i terrabyte drive with a touch screen, but they wont let you buy it till you
i actually quite like the aerodynamic design especially from the side. I dont think they cut the corners to make it lighter (they couldve done that my just making the inside hollow) but rather to create the illusion of a very thin notebook. However, i wonder if they coulve made the edges not so sharp and fit more ports on it. I also think the black keyboard is a bit odd. Maybe a very dark grey wouldve been better.
one more thing, maybe the thick border around the screen is to distinguish between consumer, and pro models. I agree with you though, the huge border just pisses me off.
The MBP is a bit heavier than the Air, but still considered thin and light in the laptop world. Plus its got alot more power, I'd definitely go with MBP rather than Air
Screen Bezel - I agree with you on the thick bezel. It's my only gripe. My thinking is it has to do with stability/reinforcement. If you look at the lid, it's SUPER thin. Also I think the screen is optical glass like the iPhone. Perhaps they needed that wide frame for support, etc. I can live with it.
Black Keys - I initially didn't like it but now it's grown on me. I guess it'll help make the back lighting pop more. Probably more practical in terms of dirt.
Watch my first macworld video it explains my beef with it. In a nutshell i think they've gone the wrong route with it - i was hoping for a cheap mac laptop with basic hardware (including more than more usb lol) - think eee pc :)
yeah but eee pc is a POS compared to a MBA, the eee PC has 512MB of memory vs 2GB that the MBA offers, the eee pc has a 7" screen which is tiny, vs 13.3" screen, it has a crappy OS and has a 4GB flash memory, vs 80GB HDD and it doesn't have Wireless N networking nor Bluetooth, which is why it's so cheap and the MBA is for travelers and businessmen, a businessmen doesn't need more than 1 USB port, the USB port will be used for the flash drive and the Micro-DVi for displaying it on a projector
We have to remember that the Air is not for everyone. It is for the person who just need a regular laptop at home downstairs for web browsing or general tasks, or for the traveler trying to get work done with out the bulk of a laptop. The Macbook and the MB Pro are targeted more towards the "overall" user who needs everything.
i want see the next model of the macbook air, this doesnt convens me i want see a macbook air proportional and with more ports, and the color of the keybord , i want a silver one
I sad it earlier in a comment reply, Brilliant in concept Flawed in execution. The "Macbook Pro Ultra-Portable" with the Imac style docking station would have been a better move in my opinion
i think the black keyboard is to set it different form the other macbooks. apple dosnt seem to like too much of the same. they like consistency, but whenit comes to a new model they seem to like it to set differences. the larger boarder must be just becuase they needed the space for the screen parts. the macbook air screen is VERY VERY thin. compared to the other macbooks
i agree i very much dislike the large bezel it make's it look almost cheep, and it shouldn't for almost a $3000 laptop. I personally like the black, silver, and glass look. Great video as all ways :)
Ok...even if the design kicks ass (it does!) ....this should be a tool for work and not an exotic sportscar in shape of a laptop with NO second USB , NO Optical drive , NO Fire Wire and NO Nice Soundsystem. Adrian! Do a tech-review on the Air! I want 2 know your opinion and do you think the people are going to buy it??? I think apple screwed up on this one......I wonder about the costs for engineering developing and...
good video man, I definitely agree with you. I think its only "pro" is its minimalist, very thin design. aside from that, it lacks hardware features (Gigabit Ethernet, additional USB ports, Firewire 400/800, optical drive, microphone-in, mini-PCI slot, etc.)... as far as aesthetics, the screen bezel is far too big for my liking, and the black keyboard looks awful. I could understand a black laptop with a dark grey keyboard, but a light-colored laptop with a dark keyboard looks ridiculous, IMO.
the reason for the keyboard was for the backlit keyboard NOT really that much for design, but on the other hand their moving to a more black-ish design
Yeah , I dont like the black keyboard either , but I have a feeling that future MBP will have black keyboards too ( all fitting in with the new black & aluminium colour scheme ).
I had similar feeling to the newer iMac when i first saw it, i was planning on getting the old white one's instead but slowly it grew on me and now i have one sat on my desk lol
i love the whole envelope thing. but you are right about the tapering off, they could have likely been able to put the optical in if it did not taper off but it would weigh a little more. A pro is more powerful and the tech is not there at a reasonable price for ultra compact. A bigger screen would weigh more.
i guess if they had made it one thickness all round they then would have a harder time justifying the lack of a optical drive.
I'm with you on the pro issue, as it seems a bit unsure of its place in the line up- is it a pro machine( based on the outside and aluminum) or is it a normal macbook( based on the screen size and keyboard)
i think that they just need to give the external Super-Drive included with the computer, so that if you want to go out then just take it with you and many people don't like the fact that it has only 1 USB port but what you can just do is buy a USB Hub, lol, i saw a USB 2.0 that costs $1 dollar at eBay and it had good feedback, so i think people should stop complaining, in my opinion the Air is a great product for travelers
umm no, it doesn't, see, a traveler or a business man won't need an Extra USB or an optical drive, the things that i mentioned were for editors and those kind of people which do need it, so it does keep it's purpose
btw, in the $1 hub you can connect up to 4 things, also, i don't like the fact that it doesn't come with an Apple Remote since it costs $19 and i also hate the fact that it doesn't have built-in Ethernet, overall i would give the MacBook air 7/10 stars
ok, but the point is, it's for travelers or business men, let me give you an example, I'm gonna act as if i were a businessman:
On work, they ask for me to make a presentation and to make a chart on the companies revenue, i, on the MacBook air, open Microsoft Office 2008 and open Power Point and Excel and make the chart and the presentation, i arrive and work and do the presentation and i present the chart and all goes well, i think you got the point, right?
OK, but for everything you said was bad about the eee is actually is plus points think 7" screen = small footprint, 4gb ssd = quick boot/ 80gb 4200rpm = sloooow boot, the eee comes with 1gb ram and is USER upgradeable to 2gb. The eee does have a non-propriatary VGA port aswell (fuck the micro-dvi crap)
your not making a point, 7" is tiny no matter what and 4GB can't be used for anything, the OS takes 1/2 the space and you have almost no other space left for storying files, and please get your info. right, the Eee PC comes stock with 512MB of RAM not 1 GB and it has a crappy processor and VGA is olldddd technology, everybody is phasing it out cause of DVI
Yeah 7" is small, which makes the whole unit compact. What are you likely to do on an ultr-portable web surfing, word processing, maybe the odd video so why the f would you need 13 inches. That makes it laptop size lol
OK small disk is a drawback but the HCSD slot compensates for that allowing up to 16gb of flash storage currently.
you can't see anything on a 7" screen, most ultra-portables have a 10" screen minimum and 16GB is still to little, if you put XP on it it will take a lot of space on the flash memory and the memory that will remain won't be able for saving many songs plus some videos and many photos and i do think that they should have made it .75" thick all the way cause then they would have space for Ethernet and maybe a normal DVI
VGA is definately a plus as this is used absolutely everywhere, and doesn't the airs adapter just go to VGA or DVI? The processor is enough for the tasks it's made to do :)
Anyway Eee = £200 Air = £1199.
All the macbook air is eyecandy, apple just wanted the title of thinest laptop chuffin waste of time.
i know the air won't sell too much but i do think that Apple didn't know what they wanted it to be, maybe they wanted an ultra-portable or a machine for businessmen or maybe for normal computer users, who knows but VGA isn't a plus, in less than 2 years everything will come in DVI format, DVI is now taking control of the market and that's the reason why Apple is facing out old technology for new one
I know dvi is taking over i prefer it to vgs, it's just the new micro-dvi is another propriatery connection which is never a plus. The adapter is just something else you will need to carry around. I really hate that i had to pay £15 for a mini-dvi to dvi adapter for the imac, they could have stuck full size dvi on there lol :)
I think the air's just one of those things where opinion is split like marmite you either love it or you hate it :)
It's not too big for a desktop, the iMac has tons of space round the back :) They could have positioned it just above the power cord it would be fine :)
And stop banging on about businessmen i can't see any business wanting to supply these to employees for the simple fact business networks rarely use mac so network incompatability and software issues will arise from that. And if that really is it's target market they're aiming the wrong way, mac users are HOME users and a "macbook eee" would sell like well... the ipod lol
many businessmen buy their own computer btw and Apple is targeting at many different markets, which is what you have to understand, first Apple was only computers, then they looked at the music market, then at the phone market and now at the business market
Yeah music, phones are apples other markets. But business isn't there hot spot. As very many mac users (inc myself) have said they wanted an ultraportable for the home user, cheaper than the macbook and compact. A SMALL screen and small form factor. Apple missed the point, thin doesn't mean portable lol
A macbook would be better for business users just as portable with a hell of a lot more features wise :)

i like the design but they can do a better mac, the keybord
i think they put the name of macbook air to complement the catalog of their macs 3 and 3
3 macs for desktop mac mini , imac , mac pro
and 3 macs portable macbook , macbook air and macbook pro

Adrian, I think you sum it up very well,
to me it's extremely impressive and a technological marvel and all of that stuf, but would I buy one, No
for the same price as the Air and the external DVD drive I can buy a 15' macbook pro with all of the ports, much more desirable,
maybe travelling journalists would like it but the non swappable battery might be a problem on long journeys
