I believe this is probably the first time that Gil tried to talk about something personal. He really appreciated the support and understanding that Catherine showed. They both enjoyed this moment which nothing was needed to be said.

That he feels guilty, that even after the years they grew apart, he still cares, and that he realizes it's true that she does know him better than he knows himself. Those knowing looks and smiles can't lie. :)
