Incredible....I've been dj'ing for a bout a year now, using CDJ 2000's and a DJM 900nexus and I was oblivious of this. I'm just recently beginning to venture into the world of mixng my sets in the same key and was having trouble mainting a clean set due to the fact of the BPM's of tracks not being the same. You def helped out mate. In addition, wanted to thank you for the knowledge, time and generoisty you've given us. All your videos are VERY helpful and knowledgeable. THANKS MATE!
Marter tempo un cdj 400 loose sync for moments, i' am asking since a lot of time this b cause every big djs aoround the world like (Armin , Markus Schulz , etc) mix in key , and i don' t know if you necesary have to play whit master tempo. I think this problem is only in cdj 400 , can anybody help me whit this?
It's better called "keylock" locking the tracks key, so this feature makes mixing tracks in key much easier, provided you know the tracks original key of course :)

master tempo is good for learning or mixing different music styles but you'll get laughed out of a club if you attempt to use master tempo as most dj's see it as cheating and not needed if you know what you're doing
@BackwheelBandit ,what are you talking about m8,anything that helps you is a plus in my books.laughed out of a club????????,what planet are you frm???
@diddsy1414 Personally, i'm not arsed if you want to use it. But I know a lot of club DJs who all say that you shouldn't need to use it, if you know what you're doing. The only time you should really need it is if you're trying to mix 2 different genres with big differences in BPM.
@diddsy1414 haha yeah, but I guess the reason some people don't like it is because if you need to alter the pitch so badly that it makes the track sound like chipmunks, then it probably doesn't go well with the tune thats already playing
@bocajrthug106 lol as I've said before, i'm really not arsed if you use it or not but I know a lot of DJs that bitch about people using it in some of the clubs I've been to. I don't care what you use as long as what comes out of the speakers sounds good.
HELP ME !!!!!!! people i got cdjs but wen i set it at the right tempo i want it will not stop moving ??? it does not stay at the tempo i want just keeping moving from tempo 2 tempo on both of my cdjs witch is messing up my mixes... CAN YOU HELP ME ????
Wow I'm a newbie and I couldn't figure out why after matching the key of my songs they were still sounding off, this video taught me to use master tempo to stay the same key. Thanks a million times John, My mixes sound great now.
You shouldn't leave the master tempo on all the time it could mess up your mix 8) only if you notice that two songs need a tone change then you do the thing J explained.
very true. I rarely use master tempo. The sound becomes choppy if you have master tempo on when you speed a song way up or down. On the older or cheaper cdjs, master tempo is terrible. It makes a song sound REALLY choppy.
useful button always use it if you play with long range pitch, what will happened when the other dj played trance on 130bpm, and yet you wanted to play a minimal techno with 120bpm after him....
are you sure you want the crowd listen to chipmunk music ??
with cdj1000mk 3. between two of them, can u set the tempo at say 120 bpm and no matter what, the next song you load up will be at 120 bpm? even if the just loaded song is 130bpm.or do you need to move the tempo fader thing to match it up with the other deck?
Im pretty sure all it does is keep the same key of the song that is playing, so if it starts at A Major it will stay at A major even if you change the pitch. This is helpful if you are trying to do harmonic mixing and know that the keys of two tracks work well together, so they don't change when you are trying to change the pitch of one.
the only downside of master tempo i think, is that all the samples are being cutted.. what i mean is, your beat you normally have when master tempo is off and you turn up or down the pitch, all de samples, kick, melos, will still be the same, while using the master tempo button, your kick and all the rest will not sound as pure as normal :).. so i never use it! :).. grtz
try to keep this in mind if this "problem/oddity" isn't yet solved with the new CDJs [mine are 10years old ;-p ] if you want to have a decent tune ^_^ Greetings from Luxembourg
Another oddity of my old cdj-100s if I pitch up and down a track with a sustained tone while having pressed Master Tempo Button, a sort of effect is added to the tone. [the sample of the tune is noticeable!]
I had a problem with my old CDJ-100 master tempo --> I had tracks on my 2 CDJ-100 nice in-beat. i pressed by accident the master tempo button and the track on this CDJ seemed to be out of the beat... by releasing the Master tempo button it was again in-beat!! Is that problem solved with the new ones?
G'day Johnathen, I think I've been following your vidz on how to dj... since the toy cars on the slipmat episode explaining beatmixing. Anyway i've got a few questions about the cdj-800mk2. Could you do an episode on how to use the quick return button, and the cue/loop call buttons, basically that top right hand corner. Also for another episode on the Technics platter could you explain the philosophy of the strobe mirors on the platter and how to use them properly as a visual aid.
what happens when you change the pitch/tempo without master tempo pressed, and then press the master tempo button? does it change the sound back to +/- 0, or does it set that position as the new key that the track is in?
also, if it werent for you I would NOT have taken the first steps in learning how to DJ. You sir have my upmost respect.
