This was and always will rank as the "greatest fight" in NHL history... and there were some really good ones. something happened at the end of this fight and which Mickey (Redmond) later commented on. Watch both closely... they say something to one another, "tap" foreheads and Probert ruffles McSorley's hair.
I have always wanted to be a "fly on the glass" at that very moment. There was violence "back in the day", but there was respect when all was said and done.
@oldschooldetroit I think you need to watch this from the other angles... there is no showing of respect, no hair ruffling, no forehead tap... when the refs jump in Proberts thumb is wrapped in McSorleys pads and the reff lets him reach around McSorleys head to remove his thumb then probie turns and skates away...
@hoone1d McSorley actually said that if he didn't respect Probie the way he did, he would have been more difficult in letting Probert remove his thumb so really the refs had nothign to do with that.
I liked him best with the Blackhawks. Remember he came straight out of the penalty box once and checked the shit out of a player without the puck. Hardest check I ever saw in my life.
Agreed. I'm a huge Flyers fan, and I would like to say Dave Brown or the "Hammer Schultz were the best. The facts are Bob Probert deserves that title. There really isn't anyone who could beat him in his prime.
All the enforcers are great. I sure as hell wouldn't want to face any of them. Football's my fav sport, but hockey is right up there. In hockey, you may get a penalty, fine, and suspension for a cheap shot, but chances are you'll get your ass kicked too. That's what makes the sport so great. The players police themselves.
Joey is a joey.... just that. He drinks streams of water from a precious clean knook, santified in pureness, enjoying his daily routine. Prances the fields, eating flowers of golden tulips. Then comes Probert from the depths of Hell, wreaks effertless destruction, submitting every opponent young and old to iron, undefeated, red fists of fury!!
Looking at the last few comments... it looks like alot of people tried to make their name, by having a pop at Probert! I've only seen a few of Kocurs fights, and he was one tough man, but would he have been able to fight week-in week-out, like Probert could, and did? As the commentator says at the end, "McSorley was brought in especially to front Probert!" That was a regular thing!!! Not in Kocurs case tho'!
Look at the time McGuire pummelled Yzerman... who better to have watching your back?
Probert was like a man possessed, trying to get revenge for the big man bullying his teammate! Would Kocur have made the same sacrifice, and point, knowing what kinda ban he'd face? Nah! Probert could have turned his hand to any sport that needs that physical power, or temperament... and would have been as at home today, in the NFL/rugby/gaelic or Aussie Rules Football, as he was in the NHL. I agree that he took some hits and went down, but u just KNEW that the twat who did it WUD PAY in BLOOD!
Kocur was probably the hardest puncher in NHL history. He knocked dudes out on a number of occasions. But I still say Probert was the toughest ever. For about a 10-12 year period he was THE man, and he fought EVERYONE. Kocur's prime fighting days pretty much ended when he left Detroit. But man, the Bruise Brothers were fun to watch.
You have to remember Probert skated many more shifts than any other enforcer I can think of. Probert throws people around as well. He is a smart fighter and if it means he gets back up on the board to get his grip or take a punch he will do it then usually pound the opponent. Remember he was drafted for his playing skills.
as an enforcer, wether or not ur afraid, u still have to fight, so, you may fear him, but you dont back down, its the way it goes, however, dont be fooled, many people fought probert and kocur, only cause they had to.
I like to feel sexy....knowing someone is watching me ..wanting me...turns me on!BADLY! Thank you so much for this. I sure do miss Probert, even McSorley. Those were the day my friend, those were the days. Remember when Kimble knocked Crowder out??? That is one of my all time favorite moments. Kimble was one of the best as well.
Proberts a Psycho. I met him once at a the Edge ice rink where the hawks practice, and he is actually cool as hell. I don't feel sorry for the guy who picked a fight with him recently at a bar and it took 9 cops and 2 sets of cuffs to subdue probert.
Crowder had the ability to hurt you with those short, quick punches. Kimble sure wrecked him though. Saw McKenzie hammer him too, but Troy was past prime by then (Vancouver). Great montage of Probie fights...some real classics here.
Probert was dirty. He was getting beaten in a fight by Bob McGill of the Leafs. At one point, McGill had both of Probert's hands tied up, so Probert head-butted McGill right in the face, knocking him out.
Probert was overrated. Domi gave up like 30lbs and 5" and still stood in with him. Crowder owned Probert. McSorley was caught past his prime in that Penguins fight and still outlasted Probert's slow ass.
Slow? What does fast accomplish against a man who has to be repeatedly electrocuted to be stopped after 3 cops couldn't do the job. Trust me. Take your time. Make your punches hard, accurate, and methodical. Take the hit, then make him regret his swinging.
Yeah, as much as I always liked Probert as a fighter, Crowder knew how to handle him. What ever happened to Troy Crowder anyway? He couldn't play hockey worth of shit, but he sure could throw hands.
Injuries cut his career short. Crowder made a couple of returns with LA and Vancouver, and even had a tryout with San Jose a few seasons ago, but didn't make the final cut.
He runs youth hockey camps now, in Ontario. Do a google search on his name and you'll find him.

Exactly. Its too bad the NHL is trying to get rid of that tough mentality that is a great part of its marketability. Gary Bettman is so stupid.
HeavyD2544 2 years ago
They can try. It will just ruin the sport. Hockey is a great game to watch. Fighting is one of the things that appeals to fringe fans.

Yup, and we have just the right idiot running the NHL to permanently ruin the sport. Hopefully he will get it eventually.

He was the king of hockey fighting for a long time. When he and Joey Kocur played together, the Wings were the toughest team around.
Some of Probert's most entertaining fights were against Bob McGill.
Too bad Probie had to quit doing cocaine. His fighting suffered.
