  • But, that said, if it were located where it'd see such high wind speeds (Dodge City, Kansas, and we'll say Florida for its hurricane exposure), it'd be half destroyed after a tornado or hurricane due to flying debris and the relatively fragile composite construction. However, locating it in a less dangerous area would either mean it's extremely remote/inaccessible, or has lower wind speeds and thus makes less actual power.

  • no material could support this and still be economical. fiber glass is way too heavy, and carbon fiber would make this more expensive than regular turbines so its retarded. there is a reason they haven't started building this, and its because its retarded.

  • @rawheas 152 Skyscrapers have heavy counterbalances to prevent the wind from swaying them out of control and still they move a fair bit. All the surface area on this device is designed to catch the wind so I dont see a problem with it moving, regardless of what its made from (within reason) More likely the volume and quality of magnets needed makes this design redundant

  • This is also impractical in the extreme. The engineering and construction feats necessary to make this machine are astronomical, and it'd need very high constant wind speed to be efficient, which is found in very, very few places in the world. But it does look kinda cool in a futuristic way.

    A hundred smaller units would make a LOT more sense, practically speaking.

  • @OrangeCrusader Would you say as astronomical as um, i don't know how about a hydroelectric damn. Or a controlled nuclear reaction? I'm gonna say electromagnetic induction is pretty straight forward. We have put men on the moon and sent lander to mars and probes beyond the furthest reaches of our solar system, i think we could get it done. force= mass x acceleration. work=Force x Distance. Power= Work/Time. Lift= coefficient of lift x surface area x 1/2 mass x Velocity squared.

  • @helicopterpilot88 Apples vs. oranges. Those sources use energy that is much more easily controlled and consistent (nuclear fission and stored potential energy of water) than a wind power plant would be. Near-zero friction or not, that's a lot of energy that has to be available reliably and consistently, as it would weigh several hundred tonnes, even if an array of composite materials is used. At 1 GW it would be 100x more powerful than our largest HAWT turbines currently being built/planned.

  • The technology to to handle that much simply doesn't exist yet, unless you astronomically scale up existing turbine technology, at exponential cost, the R&D would run into the hundreds of millions. The structural demands of this idea are also sky-high, that's a huge amount of composites that would require frequent maintenance since it needs to be light and thin, and thus more fragile, or end up impractically heavy). Simply scaling up existing stuff isn't necessarily a good idea.

  • @OrangeCrusader with drag acting to the inverse square to lift. That said, useful work can be done at nearly any radius during operation, even in light winds. If wind speed then doubled, the force would qaudruple, so it is easy to see how effective it could be. Looking at these basic relationships it is obvious that enough kinetic energy could easily be available to produce the power required to generate a near equivalent output, limited of course by the efficiency of the generator.

  • @helicopterpilot88 I'm sure it could be built, and would make a bit of energy, but the only times you'd see 1GW output would be during extremely rare (80mph rated) weather, like hurricane Irene (80mph), with the US's windiest city averaging 13.9mph. The cost to engineer and build this thing out of current technology and composites would cost well into the billions, with yearly maintenance in the millions. That's an awful lot of money when it'd output only 17% of that rating on average

  • i agree that it would be quite a challenge, and not exactly practical, but indeed effective if constructed.

  • What about combining maglev and bearings. Ceramic bearings could be used because the magnetic repulsion would bear most of the load. The bearings would only serve as a fixed guide point with very little actual load thanks to the magnets

  • The vast majority of rare earth element supply chain is controlled by China already. They have already begun export sanctions against Japan and other large magnetic consumers, prices are soaring already. Its ironic that American companies are developing this tech when they have no ability to sell it anywhere unless the Chinese agree. This will be massively to the advantage of China and the innefficiency of everyone else. China wants the US to research as much magnetic tech as possible, for free.

  • I have a question. If the turbine is levitated of the ground wouldn't the wind blow it of the magnetic field and crash it. How is this problem solved?

  • @gabydewilde You seem to misunderstood my question. I was asking how the turbine would be fixed in one spot since it it levitated of the ground by magnetic fields it has no hard connection, the wind would just blow it of the magnetic field and it would crash. I imagine they have thought of that and come up with a solution but it is not mentioned in the video. And your example with the head is not the same as the turbine because it has a hard connection wich keeps it in place - the neck.

  • @nikodormius Ok, you must picture it like a paper cup over a pencile,

    you make a small hole or a dent in the cup so that it can spin while staying on top.

    The wobbling is then corrected with magnetic repulsion and the pencil tip as well.

    You could still lift the cup off the pencil but with the turbine that wouldn't be very likely to happen.

    Most of the mass goes into the pole and most of the volume in the blades.

    Double check your calculations on the magnetic field requirements. Hint: it would disrupt the tides of the ocean and cause the extinction of nearby migratory animals. Why not just use the WIND to levitate it? Still impossible for that scale but at least it would be more efficient. Why not have a basic understanding of the laws of physics before suggesting such solutions?

  • Wonder how much power is left over after you take into account the maglev uses electricity to generate the maglev affect. If there's a power failure in the maglev, does the thing come to a grinding halt?

    The trains use electromagnets for lift, not permanent magnets. Says the turbine uses similar tech so would use some form of electromagnetic force for the bearings.

  • @oOoxelAoOo You would be right if we would rely solely on wind as our primary power source, but that's why these systems must be integrated with solar and wave harvesting. Together all 3 can easily supply more than enough energy. If the wind stops blowing ,the sun stops shining and waves stopping crashing, we have bigger problems on our plate than energy.

  • @oOoxelAoOo Thats why with renewables you have to build over capacity and upgrade existing transmission lines. A small island like Britain is ideal because you can gaurantee wind in one side of the island or the other. All you would need is to build 30 percent more turbines than max requirements, problem solved.

  • One way to benefit from very variable energy sources, like wind power, could be resupplying of hydro-power reservoirs; driving pumps directly that can for example return water from the turbine outlets back up along the feed lines.

    It would'nt necessarily be much, but it would help, and the variable would become 'stable'.

  • Unfortunately a bi-product of the internet is that people talk about but often dont do things for themseves! Children are leaving school trained into dependency which is largely what technology does. Anything un-technological is often sneered at but its what sustains and protects us ie farming practices and wind generated power. Personal autonomy is the way forward as a species but is discouraged...sad eh?

  • Now, as the vatican knows we're just work units needing to be kept in line for profit for a few. Healthy and informed units make less money. This wont change until we can find a way to shame our rulers into new ways of thinking. They use rituals to maintain focus...hence skull and bones, catholicism etc. We need to fire our own opposing rituals right back at them in an attempt to encourage entrainment.   • @helicopterpilot88 Sure, when I'm at the controls of a Robbie or Piper Arrow. However, my house is on the ground in a wind-sheltered area surrounded by mountains. That wind turbine would need to be on a 1000-foot tower to do any good.

  • I agree, its not a reliable source, but significant enough to put effort into harvesting it. And we shouldn't wait until we run out of fossil fuels. If we could combine wind, solar and geothermal energy, we could have reliable energy source. By the way I haven't heard of this maglev power turbine from scientists either. So skepticism understood.

  • Because the Press tells you something is renewible does not mean that it is renewible. Wind power takes Copper and plasics to build. Solar Takes MASSIVE Heat, pure Silcon and copper and plasic to build.

    Bio Disel Takes Chemicals,Metal,Copper,plasic, toxics to build.

    Hydrogen cells take energy to build and strip the Oxygen out of the Air then Lock it into water.

    Best Renewible energy on the planet is Atomic, The fule can be Recharge and more can be made then what was started with.

  • wind is not renewable because it takes Plasic and metals to produce. Plasic is a Toxic substance to make from Fossil fuels. Metal is even more toxic to produce...it uses fossil fules and destroys the enviroment.

    You can be sure that nuclear energy will do. It is a highly mathmatical reaction.

    You would not Bury the waste of a reactor you recharge it to remake the fule. The process gives more fule then you started with at the end.

    Radation does not leak it is a Ray not a fluid.

  • @Pigcowgreen Hippys and regular folks die from radiation poisoning though thats the trouble with nuclear. Current Uranium technology still leaves extremely poisonous waste which will be around for generations. I dont think we have the right to leave that for future generations to deal with.

    The Uranium mines also poison ground water. Uranium needs to be enriched before use , even more power used. Also Uraium is not going to be around for long term.

    Its renewables all the way for me.

  • @hablerz Uranium research is pointing to the oceans for mining.  Not what you think though; they will extract the minute amounts of Uranium from the sea water. Steady, reliable, easy to maintain, and efficient energy production is going the nuclear way. Renewable energy sources are still too inefficient to be considered en-mass.

  • Breed reactors and full fuel cycle will bring out 60 times more energy out of uranium. (the EBR-II in Idaho). The ones who use nuclear power the most are the countries who already have nuclear weapons, so I don't see the danger.

  • @artgoat Although you do require a large amount of water for the condensors of power stations (nuclear or otherwise) it doesn't have to be "clean". Most power stations take water directly from the sea or a nearby river and "strain out" large objects (fish etc). And even then they don't use-up the water, it just gets discharged back where it came from or evaporates out of the top of a cooling tower.

  • just because wind takes metals and plastics to harvest energy from it does not mean that its non renewable. the way you talk about it makes it seem that you need metal and plastic to produce the wind not harvest the energy from it. although it would take a lot of material to build turbines etc once they are made they ain't gonna bugger off in a hurry, they will work as long as there is wind providing they don't break.

    sorry your wrong...you need to repair any mechanic system. All wind power is...is a byproduct of solar energy. You do need metals,plasic,wood,oil,coal,na­tural gas,food,work...to produces wind power and mantain it.

    Take all the Energy require to build these and it will be more then can be gained for years. Plus they have to be Upkept. Even Hydro power is better

  • Despite many thing on youtube agains thermodynamic law, I heard from a TV documentary that there was nuclear reactors called Regenerated reactors, that allow exactly what you say, use the waste in a recycling process to create more fuel.

    Henry Ford originally wanted his cars to run on Ethanol made from hemp i believe and he was going to make the cars from hemp. Unfortunately standard oil/Rockefella didnt like this and had Ethanol prohibited and Hemp banned 10 years later.

  • Your very smart, and although I would say that I disagree with solar because I know it more than anyone else. It does take heat, but after the rumour came stating that it takes more energy to produce solar pv cells than they will ever creat in their lifetime, It's been shot down as false. However I agree with just about everything else you say and I'm glad your counteracting some of the tree-huggers with facts that would have to be debated.

  • There is a "new" form carbon that has been "discovered" this year08. That might be superconductive at room temp. New physics are being invented to understand it.

    With multi layering solar cells it might be possible to generate a lot of energy in "Peak solar hours" IF this becomes a commerical process.

    As from the effective lifetime of solar cells my view is that they last 11-20 years. If they have come up with a more effective solution then this, I would be interested.

  • silicon solar cells currently do not have a set life span since many of the original units are still functioning 30+ years since instillation. plus, cells do not just "stop" working, they slowly lose output, so one could theoretically maintain output by removing the oldest module in the group and adding one new one every few years. or if they have the space, just keep all of them and add a new one.

  • I can't see any power plant in front of my house, i have an idea why. By the way this looks better than any other power plant that uses non renewable energy. I'm not going to imagine how much wind does it needs because i don't know. The energy it provides must cost less to us, since wind is cheaper than oil or mining uranium, and cheaper to our environment since it doesn't harm it.

  • This is just a Savonius type windturbine. The aerodynamic efficiency is at most half of that of a rotortype windturbine. Seems to be either a scam or a crackpot project.

  • It's not that simple. All wind generators are noisy and need maintenance, but tend to more energy at night when solar panels are useless, and when we will be needing to charge the millions of electric vehicles that will be replacing gas-powered cars.

    I'd never want a wind generator in my yard... noisy eyesores needing maintenance... many others would agree with me, but would be happy with silent, passive solar panels on their home. Check out NanoSolar

  • But these giant wind generators need not to be placed where people live. They flow on magnetic fields for minimum friction and maintenance. It will take many square miles of solar panels to replace one of these wind generators. Think of solar panels as two dimensional and wind generators as three dimensional energy from the sun. Wind is also caused by the sun. Some of the wind is caused by the evaporation of water and some by the rotation of the Earth, all created by the sun.

  • I thought I should point out that the figure of 750 thousand homes is as I am aware not a constant figure but a figure under optimum wind conditions but I may be wrong.

    The turbine uses maglev bearings to reduce friction.

    One is being built in China right now so the proof is in the pudding. If it works well this kind of thing could be set up all over the world.

  • Wind will not blow through obstacles but around them. So, to get optimum streaming conditions for turbines, the area covered must be huge but the finger print of the obstacle as small as possible. A 3 rotor mill covers an area of Pi*length_of_rotor^2, and is an obstacle at 3*length_of_rotor*width_of_rot­or + area_mill_tower (much smaller than the covered wind area). The proposed Maglev Wind Turbine has an obstacle area that is basically equal to the covered wind area

  • Forgive me if I'm wrong but doesn't Betz's law apply to horizontal axis turbines? This is a vertical axis turbine.

  • Betz'slaw applies to all types of wind turbines. It is based on the principle that if you take to much energy from the wind you will get a "traffic jam" of air in front of the wind turbine and the wind will flow around, rather than through the turbine.

  • The "maglev" windturbine is just a Savonius-type turbine. With this turbine type you have always one blade going in the direction of the wind, which does the useful work, and at the same time you have another blade going against the wind, just giving resistance. That it is why the efficiency is at most half that of the Betz's limit.

  • The obstacle area of the Maglev is twice that of the useful wind area since at most one half of the area is doing useful work.

  • go to the website it says that it only takes up 100 acres compared to a 1000 windmills which takes up 64,000 acres. It makes as much power as 1000 windmills. And no tropical storm not required it uses magnets to float so theres no friction and it can work in winds as low as 3mph. One is being built in china right now.

  • it really isnt look up how much room oil factories and windmill fields take up that produce that much power. The turbine also requires a lot less maintenance and is cheaper to build. it really has no downfalls.
