I'm not old enough to remember this campaign. The first I ever saw of it was on VHS tapes of shows my dad taped. My mother clearly remembers "Pinwheel", but I don't think I personally remember any campaign before '89 or '90 (the whole post-modern look for the network). The only thing that seemed to stick from the beginning was that acid-neon color scheme until the new format started with the sleek Web 2.0 smooth-style.
@unknownartiste1 I bet because of Jersey Shore people want to hang out at that shit hole now. Yeah I have to agree with you on that, I don't think eleventy-seven is a high enough number for our point to get across.
Just to pick up where you left off at, Jersylicious, jersylicious, jersey shore, jersylicious, jersylicious, jersey shore, jersey shore, jersey shore...I'm really hoping people don't really fist pump in real life. Nor do I hope people look up to anyone from these retarded shows. Watch the movie Idiocracy, and Josie and the Pussycats and that's where we stand today.
@DisneyBlackJet Everything fuckin sucks now, this whole culture went down the fuckin toliet. There's nothing wholesome anymore, they sold up out to b.s programs. Ever notice how every channel will repeat a t.v show for hours all day ever day..USA Law and Order, Law and Order, Law and Order, Law and Order, Law and Order, CSI, CSI Law and Order Law and order... Or Chiller will be Millennium, Millennium, Millennium, Lake Placid, Millennium. ALL the channels are doing it.
@fckualreadyaye No, because they want to follow foot steps in other networks. If other networks are doing it, they have to do it. It's just a fad for a couple of years and then it would be off. Anyway, fuck iShitty and Wrong Jackson: Not Vice President. Nickelodeon is spreading commercialism in more ways than one. I wish they be simple. Have lots of bumpers, cartoons and a variety of shows and not shitty ones. Cartoon Network is doing that, but they realized that hurt them, so they might drop it
@AnimaniacsYeah, the humor on those shows are unbelievable. I was with my daughters watching t.v, and they wanted to watch nickelodeon or disney. I'm like ok, why not? I never sat down and really watched the difference between the shows they watch today, and when I was growing up. The show they were watching was suppose to be a family comedy. I look at my youngest daughter and she was just staring at the screen like a zombie. My oldest was nearly falling asleep..like wtf? They didn't laugh once
@fckualreadyaye Yeah, I know what you've meant, it's barely unbearable to actually watch it nowadays, without seeing an lice-action on those 3 networks. The difference in those live-action shows is the fact, that they have the same laugh track, same plot, pretty much and also the fact, they all suck. I have to agree with you on this one, because I just laughed and was just pissed. I just want to beat the shut out of Miranda Cosgrove and Miley Cyrus for ruining this generation's TV shows.
@AnimaniacsGuy Yeah, and the laughs just abruptly stop on these retarded shows. I don't see how all shows these days could suck so bad. There's no Saturday morning cartoons anymore, and if there are it's some retarded shit like sponge bob. Acme, Tom and Jerry, Alvin, Alf all the 80s shows had character. Entertainment turned into a blank expression
@fckualreadyaye Yeah, they do that and it just always annoys the fuck out of me. How they use a "laugh-track". That really gets extremely annoying. But, yeah, alot more good shows are dying to be replaced by shitty live-action shows such as "iCarly". They have Saturday morning cartoons, but their all E/I, live-action. But, the best would be The CW4Kids. Yeah, it is. It's not like what we had. 90's was good and if I had to say 2000 or 2001 was the last good Saturday morning cartoon shows.
Look guys, the new Nick logo is really similar to this one. I thought this was a random new idea they came up with, but I guess they're just reusing some old ideas.
Ah, remember those classic shows. Rugrats, Hey Arnold, CatDog. So Nick what do you have to offer us now? Annoying bitches who do a webshow which sucks more than a vaccum, some girl who is the vice president of a fashion company that doesn't do any actual work, and an upcoming boy band show. Nice Nick, thanks for raping us.
Nickelodeon just isn't the same these days. I watch some of the programs with my nephew, and they all have the same vibe now. I wish it wasn't only about money again.
The old Nickelodeon Sliver ball with is colorful bubble letters were moslly hand drawn, animated and possibly computer aminated. Of course computer animation was in its early development stages.
nickelodeon is not the same since sharon lois and bram elephant show canselled and pinwheel canselled nickelodeon started to stink in 1999 when sponge bob became a marathon channel they should cansel sponge bob
Nickelodeon started to suck back in the late 80's when they started showing commercials. But the commercials didn't ruin it. The programming just got bad.
This was when Nick was good! I remember Mr. Wizard, You Can't Do That On TV, Pinwheel and all the other greats! Now I don't even recognize Nick. Kids today are missing out on some great programing! I'm glad I was a kid back in the 70's/80's better shows back then!
Just like Cartoon Network nowadays.. They showed the classic stuff and had decent original programs in the late 90's. Now, all CN is basically crap. I miss Nick fromk the 80's to early 90's. Hell, even Finders Keepers was entertaining; but they have that relegated to a digital cable channel that hardly anyone watches.
I really miss those days. When I was a kid everyone wanted to have Nick and it was a pay network (like HBO.) We didn't even have cable at our house, so I'd sneak over to my friend's to watch You Can't Do That on Television, etc. Kids have it to easy and high-tech these days, back then Nick used to fire up your imagination!
Yeah...Nick was in the U.S. for along time before they introduced it in the UK. In the U.S., I remember how they made a big special out of launching their UK channel, which I don't think I've seen any other network do since then.
@joker10002 Well they were both purchased by Viacom during that time.
Nickelodeon was purchased by Viacom in July 1995. During 1994, they were an independantly run network having split from MTV Networks who purchased Pinwheel TV in circa 1984 renaming it "Nickelodeon" where this pinball logo came from which was ditched in Spring 1985 for an orange fireworks logo. Anyway MTV spend years trying to avoid being outbid by viacom but in April 1999, they threw in the towel.
@adwash73 Pinwheel TV started in 1979 as a local network in cleveland. It was renamed Nickelodeon in 1983 after MTV Networks purchased the network and turned it into a cable station.
@adwash73@Tornado1994 Actually, neither of you are right. It started in 1977, as Pinwheel, which was launched on Warner Cable. It was one of the specialized channels that were available, and aired children's programming for 6 hours a day. It's signature show, "Pinwheel" ran from 1977 to 1990, wben it was finally taken off the air. So it was like the Nickelodeon of the 70's, but it also was a cable station before MTV Networks.
@EvangelionVengeance@adwash73@Tornado1994 u guys are all 3 actually wrong. yes nickelodeon started in1977 called pinwheel and it ran until 1979. then nickelodeon ran from 1979-present.
@joker10002 Blame Viacom who is the parent company of both. This is what happens when corporations are allowed to gobble up the smaller networks! This is true with most all radio as well. News Corp, Viacom, Clear Channel Comm. All have destroyed the great programming that once existed.
@zangazoo2007 Or MTV will be Jersey Shore, Jersey Shore Jersey Shore Jersey , True Life, Sweet 16, Jersey Shore, Jersey Shore..One time I saw Sex in the City 2 playing on some channel from 10 that morning till 10pm the next day...T.V has become God Awful. There's absolutely no reason to watch anything other than the science channel. They give you little choices these days and there's no real heart put into anything like they had back in the day. These days they wanna make a quick buck
I remember when I was a kid and saw this, it used to make me mad, because it meant Nick was going off the air for the day.
It's funny how time changes things... Now watching the old Pinball era Nick stuff makes me all warm and fuzzy! Especially this, since I had a several years long argument with one of my friends that Nickelodeon actually had a theme song, back in the day. Thanks for helping me win a bet! :)
This must've been back before the producers of Nickelodeon were introduced to the wonderful world of narcotic drugs, just look at the 90s-era Nickelodeon commercials. Jesus Christ, they are trippy.
@flammablepiss No. The pinball logo for Nickelodeon was introduced in April 1984 and used until the spring of 1985 in which was replaced by a orange fireworks logo. The orange fireworks logo can be seen on old ads for Nation Geograhpic magazines from '85.
"Come Along,Come along, We can find a world of magic. Come along, come along! Come Along, We can make the world your friend. Silver ball in the air, see it glow everywhere. channel 6, here we go, channel 6, here we go, WNYK!!"
Thank you! Thank you! So so much for posting this. God! I'm not crazy, after all! I totally remember the Nickelodeon computer animated silver ball sign off.
Back when nickelodeon really had good original programming. Not like the crap that came about after they adopted the sloppy orange logo. Orange was my favorite color until then.
Now it's 24hours of crap all day long! At least stations knew when to shut down. No wonder kids today suffer withdrawl from prepetual visual stimulation.

"Come Along,Come along, We can find a world of magic. Come along, come along! Come Along, We can make the world your friend. Silver ball in the air, see it glow everywhere. Nickelo, here we go, nickelo, here we go, Nickelodeon!!"
Awesome...have been looking to find this for the longest time! And if you watch it in succession w/the 84 A&E transition/sign-on, it's almost like the real thing...LOL
"Come Along, We can find a world of magic. Come Along, We can make the world your friend. Silver ball in the air, see it glow everywhere. Nickelo, here we go, nickelo, here we go, Nickelodeon!!"
I remember seeing Nickelodeon for the 1st time around 1984 or '85. It was at an aunt's house where my brother and I stayed for a week. The only show I remember seeing was Danger Mouse. I didn't cable in my home until 1989. This was really awesome. Thank You.
This 1981 Nickelodeon sign off ID was still airing in Fall 1984 to May 1985 at the time Nickelodeon had a new logo for the network that is still used today for the cable network.
You're not going to believe this but I have a Nickelodeon TV guide that (Nick) sent me with that very same logo on it!!!
This was very cool thank you SOOO much for posting it! 1980s Nickelodeon was TRUELY THE VERY BEST. Take it from someone who saw both the 80s & 90s versions. THE 90S SUCKED TOILET WATER compared to the wonderful were on in the 80s.
Of course these days Nick is so bad that even the early 90s shows look appealing, and that's bad!!!
why bash the 80's nickelodeon? Most of us who grew up in the 90's never even saw the 80's shows. I bet in another ten years people will be saying, "damn, i miss zoey101 and All Grown Up"
And BTW i don't know why I would get yelled at for my opinion. It's not like I'm saying everyone should agree with me. I think "Forget 80's Nickelodeon, the 90's were where it's at" and I am ALLOWED to think that. So, go ahead and bash me for my own personal opinion.
Oh yes. I remember this when I was a teen. Before the orange Nick logo came along. They had this colorful logo plus that cool theme music. Thank you for reuniting me with this neat old film.
It' not... it's done by hand... CGI was way too expensive in 1984. That's why even alot of stuff in Tron, which this is mimicking, was animated by hand.
Back in the days before Nick at Nite, this would be played just before Nickelodeon went dark for the night. This "sign-off" was played well into the "Orange and Dom Casual" era of Nick's branding. I thought I'd never see this again!
There was another one of these that Nick would play at the *start* of their broadcast day...
Wow, you wouldn't see something like that on Nick now....
Cool...(the ident, not that you wouldn't that now)

Awesome...have been looking to find this for the longest time! And if you watch it in succession w/the 84 A&E transition/sign-on, it's almost like the real thing...LOL

Actually, it goes like this.

I remember when it would go off the air, noting the difference in the logo, and think how incongruous even at the wee age of 6 :)

When was this? 1981? That was the year I was born.

I wonder if PDI did this one...it's entirely possible because they did photorealistic 3D idents for so many different networks.

The Charecter Generator was used in the mornings right before Nickelodeon Signed on with a different Video, which i can't quite remember.
The CG had several pages of text Promoting the various shows on the network.
It was accompanied by some type of Generic Electronic Music.

I agree with you. Tell that to the little teenyboppers.
cubbi1977 4 years ago 4
why bash the 80's nickelodeon? Most of us who grew up in the 90's never even saw the 80's shows. I bet in another ten years people will be saying, "damn, i miss zoey101 and All Grown Up"
rissicris 4 years ago 4
Forget 80's Nickelodeon, the 90's were where it's at.
8218933 4 years ago
It's people like you who give 90's-era 'Nick kids' a bad name. Gosh, and people wonder why people who grew up in the 80's continually bash 90's kids.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Haha thanks for voting my comment -1 xD
You must be forgetting that I can state my opinion freely.
8218933alt 4 years ago
And BTW i don't know why I would get yelled at for my opinion. It's not like I'm saying everyone should agree with me. I think "Forget 80's Nickelodeon, the 90's were where it's at" and I am ALLOWED to think that. So, go ahead and bash me for my own personal opinion.
:)

How can you know that? According to ypur profile, you're only 17 and then can't have grown up during the 80's.

Besides Ren and Stimpy and Pete & Pete... 90's Nick didn't have jack squat.
visceralgristle 4 years ago
90s had Rugrats, Hidden Temple, Are You Afraid of the dark, Rockos Modern Life, Angry Beavers, Ren and Stimpy, nicks arcade!

Would it go to a "NICKELODEON: First Network for Kids" slide or a test pattern after the signoff?

Oh yes. I remember this when I was a teen. Before the orange Nick logo came along. They had this colorful logo plus that cool theme music. Thank you for reuniting me with this neat old film.

I remember this fondly. Nickelodeon used to be great in the 80s and then gradually started sucking.
I hope to find more pinball (Silver era) Nickelodeon related stuff.

I highly doubt if this is CGI. Doesn't look CGI.
Chowchillah 4 years ago
It' not... it's done by hand... CGI was way too expensive in 1984. That's why even alot of stuff in Tron, which this is mimicking, was animated by hand.
visceralgristle 4 years ago 3
Back in the days before Nick at Nite, this would be played just before Nickelodeon went dark for the night. This "sign-off" was played well into the "Orange and Dom Casual" era of Nick's branding. I thought I'd never see this again!
There was another one of these that Nick would play at the *start* of their broadcast day...
