i added a hydrosponge III to my 37 gallon tall about 7 months ago . it did a lot to even out my tanks chemistry . one thing i did i bought a new tube that is about 3 times as tall i cut the new tube to about 1 inch below the surface and it seemed to greatly increase the flow but not so much that it gathers too much particulate , and does mostly biological filtration
I have a 125 gallon aquarium and I noticed that the seller recommends the Hydro V filter. The picture of the sponge part shown appears to be very short, actually shorter than the IV, III. Is the Ad. picture correct. How many additional sponges can I stack on the tube. Kindly make a vid showing your actual Hydro V
what do you make of these fluidized bed DIY internal filters that are all the rage right now - seems like they would be easier to maintian as there is nothing to clean.
Iam new to sponge filters, and the guy recommended it for costly wise. I had no idea how it works....BRAVO! thank you so much for going in depth on how this works. now i understand how it works :) you rock!
@fighter7387 Theres no such thing as "too much filtration" but there is such thing as too much flow. I would loose the undergravel though, since they really dont do any filtering that your gravel wouldnt do already (at least biologically) and they are just a big pain in the ass.
Very good very informative very clear and simple to understand! I learned more about sponge filters in the 11 minute vid than 3 hours of research on the net!!
i like these alot but they take space in the aquarium....do they they have mini ones becuz i plann on using sponge filters along with a aquaclear 30 for my 20 long its a planted tank with drfit wood
@Cichlidlover22 They make a "pre-filter" version of this which can attach directly to your Aqua Clear 30 power filter. It would alleviate having to use another power-filter or air pump to bring water flow through the sponge filter. And yes, they do make smaller versions.
@starcraftluver62 Id imagine so. Really you just want to make sure your getting flow (complete flow, which is important or you get dead spots. I mention this for the reason put that little tubing and air stone in this sponge) and to make sure the porosity of the sponge is good enough for flow and small enough for good surface area. Theres a way to check to see if your getting flow from your sponge. I might post a video on how to measure it even if your using air let me know if youd be interested
@starcraftluver62 Yea Im going to, like I said in the videos I am testing it and it will take months. Ill have more results though than you would probably ever need. I am really taking advantage of what that filter has to offer and running tests on it and logging them. I dont have the best controls due to me not having an actual lab of sorts, but I do think it will be reliable information. Anyways be patient will be coming out within the next few months.
@SpinelessScales It depends on what model you get. Just to power a single sponge filter you need around a medium powered pump, but like I said this highly varies.
No, I know you mentioned the study - can you post in what journal or web site the study can be found? Anyone can say there has been a study and even if there has been methods could have been used that favored one result over another. I'd rather read the study myself. It wasn't that fouled up one in TFH a couple years back?
Indeed you mentioned numerous times under gravel filters. Sponge (retrofit) covering the plates was the question. Maybe even as a commercially viable product?
@desertbard Had to make another post for the link. You are right about tests and studies that have and are being done in recent years; is that they are pretty much almost always, unreliable. Its pretty much just having manufacturers to pay a testing facility to "test" their product in rigged circumstances, for a rigged out come, and then say their stuff is "proven". Actually it wont let me post a link, pm me for it if you really want it.
@desertbard No these tests were done in the 90s. Honestly though I didnt need a test to tell me this, even when I was 5 I could have told someone that pretty much any other filter is going to be superior to a ugf. As for putting a sponge on a ugf, it would be a bad idea to put sponge material on or around the plate, for numerous obvious reasons. I was talking about moding a lift tube in a couple different ways to accommodate a sponge.
@highlanderdurp Technically any sponge will work; will it work as good? Probably not. Most aquarium sponges have design differences in porosity and density for maximum biological filtration that other regular sponges dont have, or just really arent made for. Not to mention aquarium ones are better with the mechanical filtration part too, as most of them can catch more and finer debris.
Why don't you improve the under gravel filter? Place a layer of the sponge material over the whole area covered by the plates of the under gravel filter. Essentially, creating a market covering under gravel into plate-sponge filters.
how do u clean the sponge without killing the helpful bacteria?
can u run the air hose thought the the strianers and put the air stone under the bottom strainer to use the whole sponge, instead of just the upper4/5 of the sponge?
@kjbarbie2002 Yea I show you that in this video, as well as explaining that. I use an extra air line and stone on all my sponge filters, I actually tested myself and it clearly improves performance in fact I could do a whole video on that comparison if needed. Yes one way to clean it is to 1. use old aquarium water 2. take a bucket fill it with tap water then put water conditioner in, wait a couple hours, then wash it in there. Also you could get a new sponge and cut both in half to seed the new
@coochie2u Wow I would love to explain and actually try, but why bother, your obviously just flaming. Hopefully YouTube will ban you. Seriously never know what your talking about anyways.
@Tommyr Thank you, I gotta tell you though its not much to see. When a powerhead/pump is on it, theres nothing to see. When theres an air line going to it bubbles just shoot out of the lift tube I think you can see one in my very first kind of shizte video and on the water change part 2. Like I said its nothing really to watch.

@kingjamwi I have random videos around that have it in there. The V is the same height as the III and IV, it is just much bigger around.

i want to get one for my saltwater quarantine tank for a biological filter. you think a air pump is better then a power head great video

@macdaddy1600 Yes like I said in the video, air pump is better for biological filtration, powerhead is better for mechanical filtration.
