Babylon is an allagory for a corrupted system that causes us to hate each other and compete with each other for what we need while the rich play and laugh.. like the first world illuminati now.. so much technology and power but not used for the benifit of many.. shes a Rastafarian so she draws direct corrolation between colonial rule in Jamacia and the Irish struggle against English rule.. shes calling for the ruin of this corrupt system.. Babylon must fall! because its unsustainable, corrupt
@punkuddha babylon is a place. i think it was some kind of holy city which is now a part or iraq. there a boney m song called rivers of babylon so i think it might also have been a place of peace. so maybe 'fire on babylon' is a reference to a once peaceful place being a place of war. i may be completely wrong, if anybody wants to tell me im talking out my arse please feel free...id be glad to know the real meaning of the song if ive been wrong all these years
yeah you got it, Babylon is a ruined city near Baghdad. There is a prophesy in the book of Revelations telling about Babylon, a huge city, home of one of the first civilizations, being burned. I think there are a lot of references to this prophesy relating her mother to maybe the merchants or rulers of the city. It is art, so open to different interpretations and Babylon has different meanings as its story is interpreted by different groups. There's a nice short Wikipedia article about it.
@bobwise1977 - Babylon was a city state in Mesopotamia. One of the most advanced cities at the time with splendid culture, society and prosperity. Due to the Bible however, Babylon has become a symbol for corruption, hatred, prostitution and a lot of other largely undeserved stuff - since Babylon was quite eager to make laws to hinder such crimes.
she is so beautiful now days people call gaga katy perry ke$sha rihanna britney spears beautiful they dont know they use thousand of makeup stuff to look beautiful but still fails.Look at Sinead very simple but still looking thousand times better .
You know why you never hear this song on Britains Got Talent or shows like that?? It's because it's Sinéads song, nobody can come close to the passion she puts into it.
most people turned on her when she ripped up a picture of the pope during a performance on SNL. . . Then shortly after all the endless scandal of sex assault by catholic pedophile priests and clergy on children. . . those who scorned her should feel ashamed. Her point is that the pope is not divine and willingly protected those pedophiles in his Church at the expense of the children. (he just transferred them to other churches).
To think people actually hated on her for ripping on the pope. These days you can take a huge steaming dump on Benjy the Rat's head and sell it as a t-shirt.
What is heart breaking, is that the people she sang, and fought for where some of the ones that turned on her. I think people misunderstand where she was coming from. She wasn't sorry for speaking out against the pope, she was sorry for re awakening memories people weren't ready to face. Basically put, until a victim is ready to become a survivor, you cannot force them to come to terms with their past.
Her speech on snl is second only to the classic american revolutionary speech, "give me liberty or give me death." When she said it ireland was torn by the catholic church and the protestants fighting to say what she did, as an irish woman, she has got to be one of the most courageous women in the world. It was beautiful.
One of the bravest people of our time. To rip a picture of the pope on live T.V. was an act of a true warrior. She knows what Babylon is when she sees it so should all of you. Roman Catholic Religion was started by a pagan Emperor and then enforced by 600 years of torture and slaughter to purposely eradicate Jesus' message of truth and replace it with nonsense and lies of trinity Gods and hellfire, none of which is true and they threw in Christmas (Saturnalia Dec 25) for giggles.
Sinead o connor has always been interesting to me. Like so many others out there. i love her song. "nothing compares to u." but. as of recently ive been trying to focus in on her other songs....i was taken back by her old performance on SNL of "war" with her ripping up the pope's pic at the end...but i understand fully what she was trying to get across to the viewers. Freedom of Mind.
@mikkileecarter The pope had allowed child abuse to happen by priests, he and the Vatican went out of their way to ensure nobody spoke out and that provided a safety net for these child molesting priests.
She spoke out against that, and declared this evil shell of a man to be the real enemy. A shame that she was later quoted apologizing for it, she had nothing to apologize for.
i've said it before, i'll say it again, god dang that girl could sing, (and still can , ) and that little jig is kinda sexy , lol, come on now, you know you thought she was beautifull back than ,
@MrPmj1979 Of course she is not special just because she suffers. She is special because she turns her suffering into art and manages to get across to all of us what she feels, all her fears and ghosts.
@psych3577 Just thinking out loud. Actually being willing to suffer does make one special. Suffering has become something one can refuse these days, and refuse to suffer is being done more and more on a large scale. And im not even talking about psychiatric drugs yet.
Wow. For years, I thought for sure that Sinead would be quite the looker if she would just ditch the "concentration camp-survivor" look she was well-known for; it's nice to be right once in awhile. ;-)
And before anyone gets the seat of their pants in a wad: it is not lost on me that she has a fantastically versatile, powerful, and emotive singing voice.
@usergreg1498 yes, it's good that she no longer feels the need for her 'child -abuse-survivor- cum- sexless-bhuddist look' . I guess that she can handle being seen as a 'looker' now.
@andreasegde this song is about her mother if yoouh actually look it up on google what this song is about.. Who she wrote it about. its about her mom.! not the Catholic Chruch! its about how her mother abused her
I haven't heard her sing like this before, It's like her energy is tempered through calmness instead of the raw untamed energy in her first album. Epiphony central, Sinead and Bjork share something in common, and I hadn't noticed it until now.. they both have a vocal chamber that allows them to open out these really amazing notes from their throats - it's the yell/ scream notes. Think, I Play Dead from Bjork's Debut album.
I only WISH I could sing like this. Sinead is exceptionally gifted.
@vivinski wow u noticed to...i just listened to Bjork's hyperballad and now am listening to this and i feel a certain type of resemblance...its awesome. love it
@siti1ca yeah, you are right. real music is lady gaga and hannah montana...obviously you can't understand the message that sinead o'connor transmits through her music , but that doesn't give you the right to call her music garbage, at the very most you could say you don't like her music

"Its fake which is why she has the ear phones. sorry."
???? It's called a monitor, and it's so she can hear the mix better when on stage. It doesn't mean it's fake. Not only that, but her lead vocals are live, listen to the studio version. Can't speak for the band, mostly because I don't feel like being bothered but more because I don't feel like tearing apart the mix over one uninformed biased comment. I mean, really?
truth will overcome evil, the church and religion is lost without faith in Jah,God,Allah. She is the bright light of truth singing out for us to only be faithful and leave the religion of man behind.
this ws played at high volume in more ways than one here in southern cali and we heard you cleary. people like you are few and long between and we have listened since the late eighties when we first heard you... peace be with you and strength with your cause...
@RioXavier They are both amazing, hauntingly beautiful angels. God I wish they were my daughters to teach me to sing like they do and to teach me the lessons of life!
@dmkext Turned out she was right about the Pope too, covering up all the child abuse in Ireland, Americans just didnt understand, but the people of Ireland knew, she has one of the best voices ive ever heard, you should hear her sing The Foggy Dew with a band called The Cheiftains :)
@Topmostpop Sinead wrote this song (Unversal Mother album) and it is about overcoming the abuse she suffered as a child at the hands of her mother (not at the hands of priests as some think). The abuse was horrific enough that custody of Sinead and her siblings went to their father, almost unheard of in Ireland in the 1970s. Babylon, I believe, refers to the burning down of that destructive Babylonian state of mind.
@ladyfuschia Google "sinead mother abuse," several interviews will come up. Some misquote her quite severely, so try for a video interview. Basically, her father was only the 2nd man in Ireland ever awarded custody of his children - when Sinead was 8. As recently as 2010, she said that the abuse was so severe that, as a child she wet her pants when her mother came near her. She went back to live with her mother from 9 - 13 and then left her mother "forever" at 13. Her mum died in 85.
What a set of pipes! Great voice, brilliant and caring and brave woman, and she's so beautiful, especially with no hair, but with hair, still very much so.
the fact she was abused by priests says it all, there sick fuckers who take pleasure in abusing and sexually abusing little children, and that pope benedict defends them.
Intense RAW complex deeply spirtual this performance is mesmerizing.. Looks like she was turning herself INSIDEOUT .
Possessed it seems her mouth stretched to its limits was still not large enough to expel the words.. such passion. Gives one the impression she was close to ripping her beautiful little head in two.
Fantastic x

What is the implication of such a message, played during a song called *Fire On Babylon*?
It means, I wouldn't want to be living in the suburbs, when Judgement Day comes!

Damn.. I never knew she could sing like this.... Always thought of her as some weirdo on SNL and the Pope thing.... She is really good.
dmkext 1 year ago

@pgdaniels4 I don't know about her mother's abuse of her. Is there something I can read?
ladyfuschia 10 months ago
@ladyfuschia Google "sinead mother abuse," several interviews will come up. Some misquote her quite severely, so try for a video interview. Basically, her father was only the 2nd man in Ireland ever awarded custody of his children - when Sinead was 8. As recently as 2010, she said that the abuse was so severe that, as a child she wet her pants when her mother came near her. She went back to live with her mother from 9 - 13 and then left her mother "forever" at 13. Her mum died in 85.

What a set of pipes! Great voice, brilliant and caring and brave woman, and she's so beautiful, especially with no hair, but with hair, still very much so.
bargainmom 1 year ago
the fact she was abused by priests says it all, there sick fuckers who take pleasure in abusing and sexually abusing little children, and that pope benedict defends them.

Consuming performance.
The way to live a life.
Thanks.
