I'll admit I'm not a big fan of choppers in general. I can see their appeal, but they're not for me.
From a safety aspect - although if you want to be safe, why you're on a bike I'll never know - a lack of speed can be as bad as too much speed.
And from any other point of view, bike engines compared to their weight as a vehicle are enormously powerful; a 125cc can happily cruise at 40 - 50Mph. Even 50cc 'peds will do 30Mph.

I've had both types of bikes...Yamaha 600R, Yamaha R6, Kawasaki Cruiser and a Harley Road King. At 55 years old, guess which bike my wife wanted to ride? The Harley...far and away the most comfortable. After a ride with friends the conversation is always where we just rode, what we saw, etc. Not how fast or how many tricks we did. All things change with age my friend. Ride safe and don't be so critical about what your fellow rider is riding. We are all brothers on the road.

I see it a little differently. Time does go fast I agree but why not enjoy it? I have riden cruiser bikes but I wore a full face. I can see the appeal of cruiser bikes but I prefer sport bikes as I prefer speed over comfort.Sure, ask me that in 15 years time and it will be completly opposite. Im not too sure of the quality of riding in the US but here in the UK we must jump through hoops just to get a licence to ride a bike, so the quality of rider is pretty good in comparison.

@mudhutmasher you would be surprised how many people keep the stock the carb. but S&S does sell a hell of alot of stuff. the main reason people have a problem with HD is that they put on open pipes and do not rejet the stock CV carb. Surprisingly, the reason HDs "breakdown so much" is because they arent actually HD engines but revtech or other korean stuff Ive seen shovel heads with aftermarket pipes and correctly jetted carbs go over 100k miles. stock will go even further if its taken care off.

I've been riding a long, long time. My guess, new riders or from the looks of it the rider in the rear is new and the one in the front was "teaching".
I ride smaller Honda Cruisers. Not obnoxiously fast or slow... just... normal driving speed... 40-50 mph. Both Harley guys and crotch rocket rider groups largely pride themselves on being loud and obnoxious and getting attention. With Harley guys it's (look how shiny my shit is and all my fancy bullshit corporate accessories) and with Speed guys it's (look how ear piercingly loud I am as I barrel down the road at 150mph to the grocery store to get more wax)

Another point. Speed limit meens just that, the maximum safe speed for that particular road and place. You can go slower if you want or need, you can't go faster. Limits are set by the D.O.T. The speed posted is the safe speed for all...18 wheeler, 4 wheeler and two wheeler. Take your 18,000 rpm, 200 mph Sport Bike to a sanctioned track. For the past 36 yrs. on my days off my wife and I like to cruise around on Our Harley. We pay taxes also. We get zero pleasure riding on the "EDGE". GO AROUND!!
Harleys are about driving slowly and relaxed, I hope you enjoy your life because with your attitude and rice burning bike it ain't gonna last too long

when i read all these posts, i think to myself how old is everyone commenting,15? it became , my bikes better, jap v american blah blah blah.. this guy who posted was in a hurry whatever, came up on some people going for a cruise , posts it and bang turns into a circus..SO i thought id join in. you get tools that ride every bike as it seems 30% of the population are. I've had both types of bikes...Yamaha 600R, Yamaha R6, Kawasaki Cruiser and a Harley Road King. At 55 years old, guess which bike my wife wanted to ride? The Harley...far and away the most comfortable. After a ride with friends the conversation is always where we just rode, what we saw, etc. Not how fast or how many tricks we did. All things change with age my friend. Ride safe and don't be so critical about what your fellow rider is riding. We are all brothers on the road.

I see it a little differently. Time does go fast I agree but why not enjoy it? I have riden cruiser bikes but I wore a full face. I can see the appeal of cruiser bikes but I prefer sport bikes as I prefer speed over comfort.Sure, ask me that in 15 years time and it will be completly opposite. Im not too sure of the quality of riding in the US but here in the UK we must jump through hoops just to get a licence to ride a bike, so the quality of rider is pretty good in comparison.

@mudhutmasher you would be surprised how many people keep the stock the carb. but S&S does sell a hell of alot of stuff. the main reason people have a problem with HD is that they put on open pipes and do not rejet the stock CV carb. Surprisingly, the reason HDs "breakdown so much" is because they arent actually HD engines but revtech or other korean stuff Ive seen shovel heads with aftermarket pipes and correctly jetted carbs go over 100k miles. stock will go even further if its taken care off.

Just took my carb off, fuel valve body... both original and OEM replacement parts are japanese. i think it blows that they're outsourcing... especially as much as all that shit costs, but what can you do?

@Scootertuner1000 Just commenting on MY observations. Harleys tend to be ridden by babyboomers...many of them never even rode a bike before they hopped on the Harley Bandwagon..they just want to look cool.
As for me...ill stick to metrics. My friend (age 35) just got a Honda VTX 1300 Intersate and he leaves stock harleys in the dust...and in my opinion is a better looking bike with far superior technology and engineering.

I would add I have seen a great many Harleys are ridden by people in their mid to late 30s. to. All the people I know in their 40s to early 50s tend to really like 1970s and 80s Japanese 2 stroke triples (Suzukis and Kawasakis) and muscle bikes like the the KZ1000 and CBX1000 etc. One of my favorite bikes is the original hooligan bike the 76 Honda GL1000 (naked)

I ride smaller Honda Cruisers. Not obnoxiously fast or slow... just... normal driving speed... 40-50 mph. Both Harley guys and crotch rocket rider groups largely pride themselves on being loud and obnoxious and getting attention. With Harley guys it's (look how shiny my shit is and all my fancy bullshit corporate accessories) and with Speed guys it's (look how ear piercingly loud I am as I barrel down the road at 150mph to the grocery store to get more wax)

Another point. Speed limit meens just that, the maximum safe speed for that particular road and place. You can go slower if you want or need, you can't go faster. Limits are set by the D.O.T. The speed posted is the safe speed for all...18 wheeler, 4 wheeler and two wheeler. Take your 18,000 rpm, 200 mph Sport Bike to a sanctioned track. For the past 36 yrs. on my days off my wife and I like to cruise around on Our Harley. We pay taxes also. We get zero pleasure riding on the "EDGE". GO AROUND!!
