I'm Australian and I love how as part of our culture we dont take our national anthem too seriously. We never take anything too seriously. I mean Adam Hills Working Class Man version of the national anthem was hilarious, and actually pretty good. But if Bruce Springsteen "defiled" the Star Spangled Banner with Born in the USA or something like that, you can bet a whole lot of Americans would be offended, or think it not fitting of their national anthem...

The lyrics are from the poem "Defense of Fort McHenry" by Francis Scott Key, but the melody was from the British song "The Anacreontic Song" (or "To Anacreon in Heaven"). {Wikipedia has excellent articles on this.} We Yanks take our love of country WAY too seriously!
