I went to a mixed sixth form at a lads school and the boys called themselves by their surnames [as did the teachers] so it is a fashion that hasn't died yet. :)

The swimming teacher, Mr Malcolm was played by Christopher Coll, who later appeared as Victor Pendlebury, Derek Wilton's colleague in Coronation Street.

I often confuse this with the Mr Hicks/"slip on the wet floor" episode from a couple of years later.
