He's correct on many levels. I've worked with many talented vocalists that couldn't quite communicate with musicians the way they wanted because they didn't play or understand musical theory behind any instrumentation. But vocalist I've worked with that played an instrument communicated with the band much better because they spoke the language. Since Beyonce have learned piano she's found this out.

And modes and scales are great for musicians to manipulate with appropriate chord progression, even in pop music, like Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm pretty sure greatest artists like Prince and Freddie Mercury know(knew) how to use them creatively.

I'm pretty sure he was thinking "nickelodeon" when he said that, while some less than musically educated producer/editor/interviewer didn't catch it to correct him at what could have a really funny TV moment.
Cool. Prince was in a good mood when the guy asked the question. Every professional vocalist knows that Prince is an incredible vocalist, with an almost endless vocabulary of vocal ideas. In fact, it's so rich, he often changes the mellow to his most popular songs during shows, just to make it abundantly clear he has perfect pitch & harmonic knowledge of every songs he writes. Majority of the music legends love Beyonce and appreciate her multitude of talents. Beyonce resonates well with of these legends coz she reminds them of time, when sheer raw talent mattered along with the passion and work ethic behind it. Now days most of the younger artists are not very talented and lazy at the same time.

He's correct on many levels. I've worked with many talented vocalists that couldn't quite communicate with musicians the way they wanted because they didn't play or understand musical theory behind any instrumentation. But vocalist I've worked with that played an instrument communicated with the band much better because they spoke the language. Since Beyonce have learned piano she's found this out.

And modes and scales are great for musicians to manipulate with appropriate chord progression, even in pop music, like Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm pretty sure greatest artists like Prince and Freddie Mercury know(knew) how to use them creatively.

@JemFontanet As SicheZhang pointed out, they are "mixolydian" (with a Y) scales, which is one of the many modes to which he should have been referring, but he mentioned having a conversation with Beyoncé about "mixolodian" scales. I'm pretty sure he was thinking "nickelodeon" when he said that, while some less than musically educated producer/editor/interviewer didn't catch it to correct him at what could have a really funny TV moment.

Cool. Prince was in a good mood when the guy asked the question. Every professional vocalist knows that Prince is an incredible vocalist, with an almost endless vocabulary of vocal ideas. In fact, it's so rich, he often changes the mellow to his most popular songs during shows, just to make it abundantly clear he has perfect pitch & harmonic knowledge of every songs he writes. Beyonce is a singer. Prince is a vocalist that can do rifts that go from baritone to falsetto. Flawlessly. Everytime.
