  • Good vid! I've loved 1 Samuel since Sunday school; the morbid in me was fascinated by Saul constantly trying to kill David lol

  • The man hero is the one who goes against all odds and relies on faith and strength spiritually to overcome himself and evil

  • Could the witch 'raising' Samuel simply be just someone trying to communicate with Samuel's ghost or spirit, someone claiming to be a psychic? There are records of people claiming to be able to do this from ancient Greece and elsewhere, although they were mostly just drugged up. Still, might be something to consider. Does it explicitly say Samuel's body rose from the grave or something?

  • Samuel 28/13 says she,(the witch), saw gods ascending from the earth and covered with a mantle...mantle means clothing according to the bibles dictionary...

  • Does it say why their god wanted them to fight these other people or tribes?

  • They had come under judgement and Israel was called to carry it out, essentially.

  • It's not as if these people were the only ones claiming to be God's chosen. How can one know that the soldiers coming to kill you are sent by God?

  • I can't say whether these people realized they were under judgement. I think to understand this one has to take into account that the Bible begins with mankind living in God's presence. Then after sin entered the picture God withdrew to set about bringing salvation. So throughout the Old testament, God's presence is either a blessing or a curse depending upon man's actions. Then comes Christ, taking judgement upon himself, with the aim of restoring what man and God enjoyed in the beginning.

  • To put it simply, God's holiness is a consuming fire when it comes to sin. Christ is the refuge from judgement, as was Noah's Ark, which typified Christ.

  • If this is the will and behavior of this god, why call him good? One can wonder what Satan must be like, if this good and just. If anything, his rebellion is understandable.

  • Sin is disobeying God's command is it not? Disobedience to God. If not obeying him justifies death and destruction, how can one tell good and evil apart, when those who are good carry out acts of evil?

  • Holiness is God's nature, as is love. Without the second we stand no chance against the first. The two meet at the Cross, where the judgement for our sins was carried out and absorbed by God himself.

  • And this comment is a response to what?

  • I was trying to explain my understanding of sin in the context of God's holiness and love, because you asked about sin.

  • Satan's sin is different from ours. As an angel (Lucifer), he had understanding and a special relationship to God that we do not, and so his rebellion was with full knowledge of what he was doing. We, in turn, have been tempted and tricked into it.

  • Then why judge us. Thant can hardly be called just. Anyway, you think I haven't heard this before? "Holiness is God's nature" etc. It is statements like this that lead to questions like the ones I asked.

  • I don't presume to have a better understanding of divine justice than God does.

  • Well, you see I do not come from a background of any religion nor do I know any religious people, not today nor in the past. Not that I know of anyway but it's most likely that some people I have known were believers of some sort, they just didn't involve me in any of that. So hearing someone defending actions that otherwise would never be looked upon as anything else than crimes is not just passing me by.

  • I understand.

  • The relationship between David and Jonathan is one of the most interesting in the bible.

  • I'm glad you pointed out that there was still respect for Saul after he died. David in fact initiated a period of deep mourning for him. It's also clear that David felt terrible after embarrassing Saul. Overall, Saul is a very tragic figure, and though David is certainly imperfect, he is ultimately Christ-like in his broken heart for the fallen and the lost. Nice job, SC.

  • Notice that the witch screamed when she saw Samuel's spirit? That's why it's believed that she was just a typical phony medium who preyed on people's desire to speak with lost loved ones. She was surprised and afraid when Samuel's spirit actually appeared. Moreover, when Saul went this route he was defying God's law, which forbade trusting in spiritists or calling upon the dead. As it turns out, Samuel appeared just to tell Saul that he was under judgment and would be replaced by David.

  • Weird,I always thought Saul killed himself after being wounded. He asked his armourer to finish him off but the guy refused so Saul did a hari kari thing.I totally forgot about zombie Samuel!I'm pretty sure all Samuel did was yell at Saul. When Saul asked for help,Samuel said he was already damned for not comitting genocide on Amalak,I think it's called.I'm going from memory here.Kind of strange how there were witches and zombies and stuff.I'm sure something got lost in translation.

  • Intrigue! War! Betrayal! Witches! Zombies! Giants! Only in the bible...

  • Thank you for your opinoin on this part of the Bible.
