What I really like in African instruments is they are made by people who play them. Even if this banjo would looks like a shit for any western luthier, for me it's one of the most soulful and beauitful instruments I ever seen.
Amazing playing on what looks to be a homemade instrument. In my own opinion (and I am not a musician) it's what would be considered a banjo here in the States, not a guitar. Perhaps someone can tell me if the banjo was invented in Africa? It would be interesting to know.
According to Wikipedia "slaves in the American South and Appalachia fashioned the earliest banjos after instruments they had been familiar with in Africa".
Comming from the Afro Dispora and being a professional musician/music teacher for 30 years and traveling a decade in Africa I am fit to state that the banjo has its origins in the Motherland... Africa.
The recepy is: a drum shape body covered with an animal/reptile skin. 2 or 3 strings fixed and 1 or two sympathic strings... (like a Banjo)is common.
Needles to say that Western history needs to be revalued, revised and corrected...
you could really think of the banjo as just a member of a very large and extremely old family of instruments. i don't think we know 100% where they appeared first, but africa is a good bet. they have them all over the world in one form or another, though. (except maybe antarctica)
It's a banjo, not a guitar.
