  • Would it be possible to repeat the washing process more than once or will that reduce the number of yeast cells. Also I like to buy seasonal yeast will it work for these specialty strains and how long will it store in the fridge.

I think you are correct about over thinking the situation. In all of the years I have been harvesting yeast, I have never had a problem with any infections. Just be sure and sanitize well the storage containers and the washing container.

  • after the washing as you add to the smaller vessels: would it be a good idea to maybe use a vac sealer and introduce a vac seal on the mason type jar? are you worried about the yeast stored with air in terms of sanitation? would you also add a bit of sanitized water to the smaller jars too in terms of a blanket or am i just overthinking? just concerned about sanitation and using this harvested yeast and not wanting to propagate an infection on the upcoming brew day. thanks, SB

  • It took wayyyyyy longer than an hour (4+) for it to settle after washing for me - I wonder if temperature or altitude or yeast strain affects this?

  • Great demonstration! I have always heard of washing yeast, just haven't seen it! Thanks!

  • As always Gary, you've been a tremendous help! Keep up the great work. Im going to do some harvesting today and wanted to watch this again to make sure I did it right!

  • I have done this once and it worked. Now I only waited 20 minutes and I think I'll wait the full hour done in this video, you had much better seperation. Also I split mine into 4 jars. Actually I like the idea of 2 jars, otherwise the supply will probably grow to be too much. Great video, really like the easy step by step explanation and good examples of what you are doing. I have heard that you can rewash up to 5 cycles and still have reliable yeast. Any feedback on if that is true?

  • @bjcpc0337

I think five cycles is a good number. Yeast mutations is one of the problems we face with multiple usages.

  • Thanks for uploading this! I have a similar technique. Keep it up!

  • Good demonstration. This saves about $6 a batch. That adds up after a while! Thanks

  • I have done up to six months with yeast in the refrigerator and had good results. I do always make a yeast starter.

  • How long will the yeast hold up in the refrigerator?

  • Thanks, excellent video. I use plastic carboys. How would I get the good yeast out of the bottom without mixing in a lot of the trub? Should I use the racking cane? Also, how long will the harvested yeast mixture last in the fridge? Thanks again.
