  • If you make any more tutorials (i doubt it seeing the date of this vid) you should add captions or talk in the background about the tutorial, not put it in the description. (BTW I actually like the music)

  • Pro Tip: Use music from the game or similar to the game you are tutoring about, that way you can rest assured that the people coming to your video will like its background music.

  • The developer made the spys bacstab to work on the player blind side

  • Terrible demonstration, backstabs have nothing to do with where the arm is on a class. If you are positioned anywhere in the rear 180 degree arc of a class, you can backstab them. The only reason it looks like there's an advantage to going for the right arm on most classes is that most classes hold their weapon in their right hand and so hold their right arm a little closer to their bodies and farther back. The spy holds his right arm way out front, thus no backstab.

  • So this must be the reason why sometimes trying to stab a Heavy in a corridor ends up as a failstab (On his left side of the "back") and I get a facestab when I circle to their right (Which is my left side) and try to stab.

    Great job Valve! The portable portal sstem you installed on their right arm is working as advertised and goes right to their back!

  • @dong2512 Backstabs are backstabs if the engine detects a hit to the back or the sides. The reason it looks like you can stab the torso's front is because the 180 degrees are not counted on how the character model's torso is facing, but where the player is looking, hence you can stab them from the front on the right side. Also, melee does not use hitboxes to determine a hit, they use player collision boxes, hence why you can 'stab their weapons'.

    That's pretty interesting that hitbox is not used for melee but rather the collision box.

    It just might be lag compensation between client and server thing but that might be the reason why melee "hit" sound. (as in the sound they should make when each hits strike the enemy) sometimes play when the damage "ding" sound doesn't even play or vice versa.

  • @dong2512 Perhaps. As far as I know, the angle at which your melee hit occurs is measured from the center of the collision boxes, regardless of where on the box you get a hit as well, which helps explain weapon stabs. While I'm not fully sure about all this, it kinda makes sense.

  • The reason they give you extra leanency on the right side is because your knife fires out of your shoulder, like all projectiles/melee do. If you were following someone right behind them you get the advantage of having the extra hit box. Not to mention every class has their right arm cocked back except the spy.

  • Hm, for me it's normal. Always when a backstab is possible the knife get that way. Maybe because Shader setting is on High or... Well, I don't know, it's just the standard for me.

  • the backstab animation when the knife goes down happens when u do the backstab directly behind ur opponent but if u sidestab or quick stab it sometimes does that normal stab animation

  • Both. Disguises are primarily to avoid sentry fire while approaching your victims. Staying visible and disguised for long periods of time is an easy way to get caught.

    The best strategy is to cloak, diguise, stay cloaked until you find a suitable target, decloak, take your kill(s), repeat.

    You should remain cloaked as much as you can, because disguises are not particularly effective against players.

  • Disguises can work well if it fits the situation. If there is a sniper on 2Fort up where they usually hang out, disguising as a sniper and going up there can nab you a few kills without being noticed.

    Once I was disguised as a sniper on the big box in orange X and people just walked right past me, even though I wasnt scoped.

  • I agree with Blastmaster face stabs are more common, and fail stabs are even worse...in every game out of 10 stabs i make at least 1 fails...sigh

    But back on topic, I'd rather have a "stealthy ninja class" like the spy have failsafe instastabs like it does now then the whole glitched bullshti they used to have. Because reliable is buttsexy.

    I believe he gets the animation from a backstab when it hits, but no sure the amount of damage it does

  • Watch their gun. The gun shows what direction they are truly facing. Most of the world models are made so that the right arm is back a good foot or so, which makes the model's back different from the player's real back. The spy is the only one who's left arm is farther back than his right. Also, backstabs don't depend on hitbox sides. If a player's hitbox is hit by the knife, the server then checks the angle that the player hit was looking. It also uses lag compensation, making facestabs.

  • Stabbing is not done based upon where you're standing or where they're facing or anything. It has to do with the hitboxes, If you "hit" on their back, it counts as a backstab. the back faces on the hitboxes are set to one hit kill from a knife. The problem lies in the fact that they're obviously rotated in some fashion or you're catching the back of the right arm/shoulder (which holds the gun, so will be farther out).

  • The "back" part is obviously based on the opposite direction from where they're looking (where their weapons are pointed). Since most of them stand sideways, it doesn't actualy look like their backs.

    So basically, if you want to figure out where their back or sides are, look at where they're looking, not what looks like their back. It has nothing to do with their "right arm".

    Seems pretty obvious to me. Every position from which you can backstab, you're looking at the side of their head.

  • The facestabs can be explained with the delay betwen the actual body and the hiboxes. Create a server and test by yourself. Is ridiculous. :D

  • Before telling him to stop complaining or whatever, go to about 3:50 and look at where he stabs the engineer from. Sure, its made to prevent wall hugging, but he's an entire engineer's width away and still gets a stab.
