@frommanilla Really nothing to speak about. Source, knowledge and room/gear is what makes the difference IMO. Both Logic and Ptools can deliver excellent digital sound quality.

Anybody who calls a U87 a cheap mic doesn't know what microphones cost. The U87 isn't a cheap mic by any means. Sure there are more expensive ones but it is by no means cheap, absolutely or relatively speaking. Just a dumb comment. But it sure can take a beating.

@zachabend when your working in a studio with a quarter million dollars in outboard equipment, hardware and software.. a 3 thousand dollar mic is cheap, Relatively speaking. also CHEAPER then a TeleFunken he mentioned earlier. so not really a dumb comment from his perspective of cheap.

@zachabend They know exactly how much microphones cost, which is why they referred to the U87 as cheap in comparison to the microphones they normally use. The 251 is three times the price.

Just tried the whole parallel kick into a dbx 160x into a pultec. both were URS emulations but all is can say is WOW.

Do you then send the clean & processed kick to the same bus for more compression and eq?

if so do you use the same compressor and eq combo and add say a API eq for more processing?

another thing I notice with most of these engineers on youtube videos they track levels are clipping in protools.. I was taught in the digital world you record at very low levels, and its best to use an analog mixer to sum and bring that level back into real world levels +4dbu= 0VU

They do seem to dance around some of the subjects but I concluded that it was mostly due to the broad amount of possibilities that one can do to handle a particular situation. But I feel what you're saying. Every time it seems as if they're about to give the juiciest bit of technical advice, Dave says something like, "we'll get to that later," or that they don't have enough time.

beating around the bush type thing. people if you really want to learn, go to a studio in a city near you record a few songs for fun, take a note pad and tell the engineer you are only there for educational reasons.

Some Recommendations for the Show

We can work to make it the best it can be. These are just my opinions from my observations so far.

1) Try having users mail in questions (3 mail-in questions a week should be good) so you can better prepare for the answers which can save you time. You can still answer live chat messages while maintaining balance with the mail-ins.

2) Try using lavalier microphones for your ITL sessions the sound quality would be better with added clarity.

Oh I am happy to hear that they will get into rock a little, till now I thought it was outside the scope of the show which depressed me. Though most of what they said until now helped me alot. Maybe Michael Brauer would be the man to ask about compressing distorted guitars and lead synths (His work on Octavarium by Dream Theater was awesome, it just sounded "realistic" and separat (multibus technique??? I never really understood all of it...)). You guys are brilliant!
