I just love how this game has been out for the entire decade of my life, and only 3 months later do I find out its excistance. Well anyway, it wouldn't ever match the epicness of fully voiced story mode of all quests by Bioware (Best RPG game maker EVER) and the most amazing graphical entertainment of the worlds that I have ever seen.
@odstrooper117 oh dude, ive played both and i can honestly say that swtor is an epic fail. play and see it yourself. swtor has no love and no soul, its a poor wow clone that gets boring very fast, no way to compare it with swg.
@odstrooper117 You really don't know what you missed out in SWG compared to SWTOR and I played both (SWG longer). Trust me, SWG is better Pre-Cu of course.
It's a Star Wars MMO.. so you guys all have the expectation that it should be like SWG? SWTOR is a themepark MMO. if you prefered SWG over WoW.. you won't like it.. simple. They can't be compared. presentation and quality wise? ToR wins.. that's all you can really judge them on, graphics and storytelling.

@butthead6886 pvp is real lame. i did it one time and it was in a indoor battle arena where u play some type of football game...hutt ball they call it
@butthead6886 actually the pvp is as good or better than any standard mmo today. They do have a focus on open world pvp too as there are daily quests to open world pvp on a lvl 50 planet. It's not as good as the old days of setting up bases and taking them down in swg but don't really expect it to be that good. Who knows, maybe eventually they'll have player cities/bases. Don't expect any new mmo to start out as good as swg was.. 32 classes and player cities ftw. Swtor is still worth it though.

I don't understand the notion of 'shutting down' an MMO. Isn't the whole point to keep the world open and ongoing. Graphics and infrastructures should just be updated over the years to improve the experience. Why should players who have invested so much time (and emotion) into something have to walk away from it due to (*whatever reason developers have for ending these games.*)
Well, you have to hand it to SoE, they sure knew how to make good graphics. Even to this day, the graphics in SWG (well, were) great. And that is from an engine released in 2003 (probably begun working on it 1999-2000 or so.
@axxis30 I thought they were dated. Anyone can make high-resolution textures; the real measure of graphics comes from how they're applied. SWG just simply looked poor after almost a decade; animations looked unnatural, the height-map terrain engine was just not up to par (too "bubbly" and handled texture stretching over sharp height variances very poorly). Faces in the game just looked plain unnatural, and skin looked odd. Water was probably its weakest point. It was at its best with metals.
I play and love SWTOR, and wanted to play SWG when it came out. I just never had the money back then. That and I was young, thirteen maybe fourteen? In any case, call me a noon but I'll try this game if it comes back as F2P.
@gaddeiljr Check out swgemu.com - they are completly recreating the game to the point when it was at it's best. Any fan of the old school SWG (Pre-CU and especially pre-NGE) should check this out. Thumb me up so people can see!
Putting a beautiful ending to a beautiful game. I will always remember Galaxies, used to play it with my big brother back in the day when we were kids. All the blaster and city sounds bring back good memories. Even though I play The Old Republic now, Galaxies will remain a classic and revolutionary in the Star Wars fanbase.
I miss this game. Played from release until the NGE destroyed everything. Every MMO I've played since then seems shallow in comparison. We need a new sandbox game, seriously
@jdhoutz They always come back though. I met a jedi today who was apparently around since 2006 and he came back. Soon (TM) the test center's features will be released on the play server, then we have player housing, and player cities, plus an alpha JtL part.

At least you can still get on SWGEmu to enjoy the scenery, but yeah, it isn't exactly the same experience. I can't believe you continued to play after the NGE. That event was akin to being married to somebody who at one point in your relationship gets into a horrible, brain damaging car accident.
SWG. The game where I hit max lvl in less than 2 days making a macro that repeats a previous macro containing skills. AFK, have coffee, ding ding ding... Wont miss it.
Its hard watching this. I would have done the same thing if I was there to experience the last few moments. I would go to my remote, lonely house on Naboo and just sit there. :( My house was in an awesome location that I spent a long time finding. I would sit right outside and count the minutes. SWTOR looks like a great game.... but I will never forget SWG.

It may not lose a lot if Bioware keeps up what they're doing, and they might since they've got tons of future content done and already made their voice actors sign their souls to them.

@971QKE SWGEmu started in 2004 and should have been released with all vanilla features by no later than 2009. It's pointless now, the game is too outdated (in about 18 months is will be a decade old) - all we can hope for is something akin to a SWG 2.

@StuffedAnimalPlanet a message saying connection to SWG lost showed up on the screen then after around 30 seconds it put you into the character log in screen.
@Qmental naw its more like EA disapproves of sticking with a old game once a newer game comes out.... out with the old and in with the new is EA's moto.... just look at their other games... for example C&C generals got ditched for zero hour... then go ditched for the next game they released.... they dont even keep a janitor around to keep things tidy. they just take every employee working on the game and say if it breaks then its breaks, its a older game anyways... come to this new game.

for me although wandering the star wars universe was amazing, what really hooked me was the community. When CU hit and the first wave of friends left I was sad, when NGE hit and almost everyone left the devastated me. SWG was not about being story driven or content, it never needed content, the world was the content and all the great people in it.
SWG was way more sandbox then SWTOR will be; big downside, and one of the only ones; you can't even have any ship customization, or even have a roleplay description for your character.

you know that there a free and legal version called Star Wars Galaxies Emu. you need the CD. maybe you people like the idea. i want a jedi or starships, they look that they are taking the idea to use again jedis and are testing to have starships. maybe it dosnt work like SOE power but its free and its a legal fan made
@juanfjimenez9 Star Wars is still LA's intellectual property. If they feel the EMU is going to steal enough potential subs from TOR then they will get a cease and desist issued against the EMU devs. It is NOT an issue of SoE coding being stolen and action being taken on that. an intellectual property is much bigger than that. Even them calling it Star Wars Galaxies Emu infringes on the Star Wars copyright even if no money is being made.
@BrittaanyBanks This is something they are well aware of but the fact they aren't making money off of it keeps them in the clear. Even if there was a problem by the time they are finished with it and when it would have any effect on TOR would be too late for lucas to do anything about it. The servers would be handed out and they would have to go after people hosting them.
@HerenIstarian I downloaded a game to my android. It was a pokemon game. It was provided for free by the creator. However it got pulled from the android market because it infringed on the copywright.
Emu is no different. Providing a SW game even if it uses your own code it still has Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, etc, etc etc. Again.... no money has to be made for the infringement to take place.
Do not put it past LA to go after all EMUs. They have the reach.
@BrittaanyBanks Actually, you purchase the rights of those characters when you buy the game itself. Everything on the disk, you paid for. The models, and names are on the disk. The code is not. That is why it is completely legal. Really, if you don't know law, you shouldn't talk about it because 'one' time something got pulled down.
I like TOR, it is fun to play, but those of you who quit SWG because of the combat upgrade and the NGE are in for a rude surprise as TOR is exactly what LA was trying to get SoE to turn SWG into.

What they developed and what is now there is what they imagined, and its nothing like what TOR is now. TOR is different in every aspect of the game.
@shelvanuberwan You are right. The original devs dreamed SWG to be something much greater then it was. Unfortunately they never realized that dream. It may have had potential but it was never realized. Player base was dwindling rapidly well before the CU and they changed the game. Player base was still crumbling so LA slapped the NGE on it. Look at many of the things added after the NGE and they mirror things in TOR like the skill point system, warzones, heroics, etc.

@Qmental naw its more like EA disapproves of sticking with a old game once a newer game comes out.... out with the old and in with the new is EA's moto.... just look at their other games... for example C&C generals got ditched for zero hour... then go ditched for the next game they released.... they dont even keep a janitor around to keep things tidy. they just take every employee working on the game and say if it breaks then its breaks, its a older game anyways... come to this new game.

Sad.... So sad... I avoided these overly emotion moments by just thinking about SWGEmu. I know its not complete, but its playable. I still have my adventures :D Makes me calm. Its still sad that SWG live was a completed game, and Emu is just under development. Have to do what you can do though.

i havent played in years.. actually when wow was released i played both wow and swg but then i just got sick of soe fucking with shit.. i had a master terraskasi artist and had found my first holocron and just left the game.. i fuckin miss grinding out the sand people at the far south eastern corner of tatooine but its time to move on. for me although wandering the star wars universe was amazing, what really hooked me was the community. When CU hit and the first wave of friends left I was sad, when NGE hit and almost everyone left the devastated me. SWG was not about being story driven or content, it never needed content, the world was the content and all the great people in it.

SWG was way more sandbox then SWTOR will be; big downside, and one of the only ones; you can't even have any ship customization, or even have a roleplay description for your character.

@juanfjimenez9 Star Wars is still LA's intellectual property. If they feel the EMU is going to steal enough potential subs from TOR then they will get a cease and desist issued against the EMU devs. It is NOT an issue of SoE coding being stolen and action being taken on that. an intellectual property is much bigger than that. Even them calling it Star Wars Galaxies Emu infringes on the Star Wars copyright even if no money is being made.

@BrittaanyBanks This is something they are well aware of but the fact they aren't making money off of it keeps them in the clear. Even if there was a problem by the time they are finished with it and when it would have any effect on TOR would be too late for lucas to do anything about it. The servers would be handed out and they would have to go after people hosting them.

@HerenIstarian I downloaded a game to my android. It was a pokemon game. It was provided for free by the creator. However it got pulled from the android market because it infringed on the copywright.
Emu is no different. Providing a SW game even if it uses your own code it still has Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, etc, etc etc. Again.... no money has to be made for the infringement to take place.
Do not put it past LA to go after all EMUs. They have the reach.

@BrittaanyBanks Actually, you purchase the rights of those characters when you buy the game itself. Everything on the disk, you paid for. The models, and names are on the disk. The code is not. That is why it is completely legal. Really, if you don't know law, you shouldn't talk about it because 'one' time something got pulled down.

I like TOR, it is fun to play, but those of you who quit SWG because of the combat upgrade and the NGE are in for a rude surprise as TOR is exactly what LA was trying to get SoE to turn SWG into.

What they developed and what is now there is what they imagined, and its nothing like what TOR is now. TOR is different in every aspect of the game.

@shelvanuberwan You are right. The original devs dreamed SWG to be something much greater then it was. Unfortunately they never realized that dream. It may have had potential but it was never realized. Player base was dwindling rapidly well before the CU and they changed the game. Player base was still crumbling so LA slapped the NGE on it. Look at many of the things added after the NGE and they mirror things in TOR like the skill point system, warzones, heroics, etc.
