@eyelesslife ---sorry, no. The Swans did not form til after this club closed. Except for a few months running the video lounge at Danceteria after Hurrah closed, I stopped shooting live gigs unless it was part of a planned production. Hurrah was a unique chance for me as a full time club employee to organise regular shooting no matter if I knew and liked the band or not. Otherwise I would have missed capturing many great bands who were below the radar and disappeared as fast as they formed.
there is a full set but needs tons of editing. will do it one day. meanwhile, hope to make a musical essay including a few cuts with an interesting counterpoint of other bands and new interviews with members of this group and others. working title is "7 Deadly Synths".
the first swans ep isn't very comparable to what followed.......it's, in fact, rather spacey.....hint: listen to under headphones -- the guitarist (jonothan kane) and horn player swirl around your head and gira just pounds relentless bass lines out and chants.......it quite outshines any of the 'no new york' stuff happening at the time, in my opinion.....speak!!!!!!!!
This unique mix of disparate talents is pulled together with great intensity. Each original song in their show draws one into a zone that is pleasure, pain, fear, revelry, defiance, unbounded animal drive. The vocal taunts a near-musicality that is not like a reed instrument., more like a tympanny drum.
Watching this clip I get the feeling that suddenly any one of them may propell into orbit. The lyrics are at once "down-to-earth" and necromanntic. Pretty wierd stuff.
wow, michael in action ;) my earlier boston band V; and circus mort were acquainted thru mutual gigs..hurrahs was a memorable part of the ny scene

@posthumanhero I've heard the first Swans EP!
Better than Gira made them out to be, these ones, but still less impressive than Swans.

Sounds like most early new wave, post-punk...
By the way, anyone else notice how he appears awkward and a little shy on stage? Nothing like the taunting screaming shirtless monster.

Hi All, excuse me for misspelling the name, I am in France and got used to adding an E to Mort. Will change that in the next excerpt I make.

About how old would he be here? I'm not even sure how old he is now, or he old he was when SWANS started, so I can't figure it out...
nobukowski 3 years ago
well he was about 26 when he started swans, so about 25/26 here...he's most likely in his early 60s now....still going strong though!!

Holy shit! This is great footage! And it sounds so much better than Gira always leads on! I want to hear more!
theboywhospokeclouds 3 years ago
Yeah, Circus Mort sounds a lot better than Gira says it does. I personally think he's a bit too hard on himself.
