Mookie in my opinion is the worst character in this movie...He's lazy , irresponsible and a racist....moreover he resents responsibility and has a very evil streak in him...however this was a very entertaining movie with great performances by Aiello and the Mayor.

Spike Lee also said that it is up to the viewer on who did the right thing or not, however at Cannes he said clearly that Da Mayor did the right thing by protecting Sal and his sons, and the police certainly didn't do the right thing, as you saw here.

Lets look at the situation here. Raheem and buggin' out start making demands to put "brothers" on the wall, which is crazy because it is Sal's restaurant. Sal also has the right to tell raheem to turn his radio off, and when radio raheem and buggin' out start to protest more loudly, Sal destroys the radio, in reasonable response to their protestation. Radio Raheem then attempts to kill Sal, which then JUSTIFIES his murder by the policemen. Radio Raheem started it, and deserved to die.

@flownassis I also need to say that racism is still around today. This movie proves it and also the event that happened Aug. 5th in Mississippi. An innocent black man was killed by three white buys just bc they were bored. I feel like you should do more research on the movie before you judge it. N f you don't like it... But clearly you saw in this movie how the white cop killed Radio Raheem. He was told while he was choking him that it was ENOUGH. But did he stop? No! So dont blame the black man with the glasses for the death of Radio Raheem. Bc it could've been prevented if the cop stop chocking him. This movie is not pointless AT ALL! It has a very important message.

@8610803eternal I agree w/ your reasoning up until the "reasonable" destruction of the radio. You cannot escalate from verbal assault or tresspass (both of which Raheem and his friends are guilty of) to violence, which Sal unjustly initiates.
The radio is Raheem's property. Sal, therefore, has no right to destroy it. He has a right to remove it from his property (the store). That's actually how the law works, hate to break it to you, scholar...

@8610803eternal But Sal is also trying to kill Raheem. Their hands are around each other's necks. Raheem is younger,stronger therefore he is defeating Sal, but his ATTEMPT to murder is co-equal w/ Sal's ATTEMPT.
Raheem is no more deserving of police restraint than Sal, who is engaged in the same violent assault and has also destroyed property not his own.
The policeman, then, chokes Raheem into unconsciousness. His training distinguishes between this state and death and he willfully kills him

@8610803eternal Police are only allowed to use deadly force when their safety is in danger. The penalty for resisting arrest is not death. After he became unconscious, Raheem posed no threat. Therefore, the matter should have ended there.
In the 80s police were taught to restrain young black men w/ sleeper holds such as the one the policeman uses. They were trained to subdue, not to kill.
The practice was outlawed due to these kinds of killings
The cop committed unpremeditated murder.

Lets look at the situation here. Raheem and buggin' out start making demands to put "brothers" on the wall, which is crazy because it is Sal's restaurant. Sal also has the right to tell raheem to turn his radio off, and when radio raheem and buggin' out start to protest more loudly, Sal destroys the radio, in reasonable response to their protestation. Radio Raheem then attempts to kill Sal, which then JUSTIFIES his murder by the policemen. Radio Raheem started it, and deserved to die.
