Saw them on the Combat Rock tour in 1982 but it was over by then - I wish I had seen them in 77. At least I got to see Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros before he died. I saw the Beatles live [yes, I am that old] and the Stones and the Who several times, but the Clash were the business!
I saw them in NY a couple of times in the 80s, nothing has ever come close to those concerts. No group has ever come close. "The only band that matters."
I saw them in Toronto 1982. The stage had meshing and camouflage, so it was easy to climb up on stage. I went during the song "Call Up", which was pretty mellow and after 30 seconds I was politely escorted off the stage. At Police and Thieves, this big black guy went berserk and rushed the stage. He was the 1st to get thrown off stage. White Riot was the encore and Joe created a Wall of Sound. Fans rushed the stage and were getting thrown off seconds after they got up.
@Iamcola65 hahaha are you kidding??!! this video is on 1976 or some!!! And even if they we're a new band, they wouldn't copy anything of Nickelback! they don't need it....
Elvis was a corporate shill that allowed Black music to be played by a white man to sell records....He had ZERO impact outside POP culture. The CLASH fueled a rebellion that changed the world.
AMEN AMEN rip joe strummer i am so glad i got to see them live a few times. so grateful that i was alive back then. NO BAND THESE DAYS ARE ANYWHERE NEAR THE CLASH NOT WORTHY TO WASH THEIR FEET LOL LONG LIVE THE REAL PUNK THE CLASH=THE Truth
I was born way too late to see them live. Which fucking sucks, The Clash is the greatest band ever, and kids in my generation are stupid fucks for not liking them.
@Ncjpr1993 well done mate for seeing beyond your peer group/age/media bollox
im an old fart of 46 now but i WAS lucky enough to have been born early enough to see them TWICE in one week after the release of London Calling in 1980. Tuesday in Birmingham (England ) and Thursday (Coventry).
I already knew at 17yo that they would never be that good again so i did the two gigs. Yes, those gigs and many others from 1979-1982 remain unbeatable to this date. I hope I live to see energy like that again
@daytonacameras I'll thank my family for my taste in music. My mom raised me listening to her vinyls, which ranged from stuff as soft as Elton John, to stuff like Iron Maiden. My oldest brother got me into punk when I was about 5. I would dig through his CD collection to look for something to play Super Mario 64 to, and one day, I found The Clash.
well he must be tasting pitch fork about now so who cares anyway ? I just hope scratch will take it easier on him than that vocal was on my ears .... all of who listen to damn punk rock will join him in hell soon enough anyway and we will have other concerns. queens and junkies .... lord - forgive that out of tune guitar and poser homo dancing.
you make us christians look bad, you inconsiderate prick, i love punk rock probably more than you love god, and i love god probably more than you do as well you self righteous stain upon all that jesus preached

i like rock the casbah. yea, its not as good as this or complete control, but its still better than most bands. same with know your rights and songs like that
that's clearly bollocks, unless of course you want the clash to have stuck to one genre, and not branched out into reggae, dub, hip hop, funk etc... (there's a big list up the page somewhere) like the pistols?
and this is why noel gallagher ("5 of the clash's albums aren't worth dick compared to never mind the bollocks") knows fuck all about anything and shouldn't be listened to
People who say the Clash weren't punk because they mixed genres are missing the point, isn't punk supposed to be about breaking boundaries and having freedom? So people who say that, stick to yer Pistols and whatever you like but don't accuse the Clash of "selling out". I like thier early stuff and later stuff, but stop fighting about it.
the Pistols sold out from the very beginning. I have way way way more respect for the Clash then the pistols. The Clash weren't in it for the money. They are the most influential punks ever!
the clash never ever sold out ,they put new angles on the time, with diginty.what would the pistols have sounded like in 81 -82 .does it bare even thinking about
They sold out London Calling 2-record set & Sandinista! 3-record set for the price of a 1!
The Clash were the only punk band with groove. Theyr music incorporate punk with reggae, dub, funk, rocksteady, garage, hip-hop, rockabilly, dance, jazz, ska, new wave, and many other genres.
My fave "all time" album is Sandinista! followed by London Calling. In Combat Rock there are a lot of greatest "s***t"/songs as Know Your Rights, Straight To Hell, Ghetto Defendant, SISOSIG?, RTC, ...
Um, to be fair, WRONG! All their best songs were not on the first album. That album is perhaps the greatest rock album ever, but there is also a ton of great rock and roll on London Calling.
I agree. Don't forget Sandanista. Not as cohesive as previous albums, but they were fearlessly experimenting and pulled off some great numbers. Charlie Don't Surf, Hitsville UK, Police On My Back, and the Magnificent Seven stand out.
the clash were punk upto their first lp,then they sold out and produced shit records they even admitted it themselves, they were great when they were punk the clash-the clash is my all time fav lp
The Clash are the best fuckin punk band ever. Ramones are only good live for the most part the sex pistold just died the clash they could've release an album that was the most polished and every cord was perfect it would still be more punk then any thing else.
yes this great 1977 was the best year of my my nearly 50 years.the clash live were fucking great but the sex pistols live was like being hit by a train.
<b>Joe</b> has given Us a 110% of powerful energy in all of their gigs and he died also for this cause! A <b>Clash</b>'s concert was most like a big asteroid that hits the earth (uncommensurable)! All the other "stuffs" were only fun.
<b>The Clash</b> were, is and will be the best band ever, and the only band that matters!
Wow. This must be early Clash. I mean, I've heard this song but from the look of the video it seems "Sex Pistols"-ish and maybe Ramones. Maybe the same time period??? In this they even kind of look like Sex Pistols. I hope I'm not pissing anyone off, I've never seem them like that!
