Question. Not that I'm complaining or anything, but are there any adaptions where Holmes and Watson /aren't/ in an implied relationship? Seriously, every adaption I've scene they are so close that they could be married. Even the original canon implies it.
@1kbear1995 Some of the older ones, yeah. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Holmes and Watson - the first really famous on-screen pair, especially in America - aren't that close. Well, yeah, sure, they live together and all that, but the bond that you feel in Guy Ritchie's movies, the Granada adaptions with Jeremy Brett and the knew BBC series, kinda, just isn't there, I think. Not in the same way. Which is a shame, I think, 'cause as you say, it's SO in the books! :) Love it! :D
@1kbear1995 you just answered your own question. even the original canon implies it. so naturally everyone else who wishes to follow canon will imply it. the best rendition of it so far is the BBC sherlock series with benedict/martin. grated its written by a gay man mark gratiss (also invovled with dr. who) so the gay jokes go through the roof there...yet they still dont take "that extra step" ... yet..
Knowing Gatiss and Moffat... I really wouldn't be surprised if they did get together. Granted the Conan Doyle Estate says yes to the wishes of the fans. If CDE ever does say yes, then BBC's Sherlock would have them together. No doubt about it.
@1kbear1995 really? wow i did NOT know that! so its similar to how gene rodenberry says "thyla" for kirk/spock without having to go yeah or nay about it then? cool!
@mystiquesword Kinda, yeah. It's funny, for every homophobe out there, there is like 5 LGBTQA supporters who love slash. Hense the reason why CDE are considering it.
@1kbear1995 LOL yeah. homophobes are a thing of the past. that said, i hope they keep it kind of vague much like the kirk/spock. that way SOME stuff is left to the imagination.
@mystiquesword True, it would be much better, it is very hard to portray Holmes in love and is typically made OOC. Not in adaptions, but in fanfiction. But it still would probably be OOC in an adaption.
@1kbear1995 well they seem to do a good job with sherlock/irene in that british modern era adaption one. even in the books it seems like irene is the only woman to ever get any interest from sherlock.
Mary doesn't have parents in the books, you know... her late-father was in fact a major character in the Sign of Four, one of the major cases in the chronology.
Holmes sleeping on Watson's shoulder + the bickering + The fact that Holmes and Watson share everything ("It's OUR dog!") + The fact the Holmes wants to be involved = Bromance
'Why would i not be invited to my own brother's country home, Watson now you're not making any sense', I love the way RDJ delivers that line, so good!
I'm going to be so sad if they removed the bromance and "bisexual undertone" in 2 because of the copyright pricks. I remember they weren't going to sell the rights for the second film unless they did, and the second film's been made, thus...
It kinda reminds me of House and Wilson... and funny how their names are similar. And how Watson is always getting Holmes out of trouble. And how Holmes is somewhat of a genius. Weird.
Robert Downey Jr. said that Guy Ritchie was pleased whenever him and Jude Law gave a performance approaching heterosexual. In hindsight, the writers may have been partially to blame.
I THINK CONAN DOYLE's creation of Watson and Sherlock's relationship is to show that no matter how antisocial and unfriendly you are, there is still someone to be your true friend in the end
@heartofShou25 Well, hanging out with someone like Holmes can drive anyone crazy. Thanks! ^__^ Jade Curtiss is my most favorite character from the Tales series.
I have yet to see the movie, though I've heard it's very much a Holmes/Watson paired flick. I agree more with you that they're the "old married couple" style friends.
Me and my BFF are probably a little like this, too. Seems like we're always bickering lately, and somehow we still stand each other. God only knows how.
I love it. *D* It definitely shows a bit more light on Holmes and Watson's friendship, which I love. I just keep watching over and over again... Hmmm...
Oddly enough Erro and I are like that too. There are times when we have no idea how we get along- we're such opposites- but other times our friendship comes very naturally. There are all sorts of friends I suppose....
