As Near said in the series, neither, he or Mello, reached the level of L, but both were able to catch Light. Near would have died if not for he discovered that the Death Note than Mikami was wearing was fake and he found out when Mello kidnapped to Takada and Mikami wrote his name in the original Death Note that was hidden in the bank, neither, Mello or Near overcome to L individually, but together they were able to arrest that who unfortunately could not L.

L's not a loser, Near's an ass. If it wasn't for L, Near wouldn't have even known about Kira aka Light. Because we were stuck in Wammy's. Also If it wasn't because of L he wouldn't have known Light was the main suspect of being Kira, and Amane Misa as 2nd Kira. L's smart, very smart and It's amazing he could have figured out that much though it's quite obvious. Near's not smarter and wiser than L. Fuck no. He's just more logic.

L knew he was Kira from the start, he was just trying to figure out the evidence so he could pull it all together. That way he would have the right to arrest Light on the charges of being Kira. All L had to do was test the 13 day rule and the case would have been solved right then and there with believable evidence that Light Yagami was Kira. Except he was killed then. So that made testing the rule while he had the chance impossible. I may be smart, but I doubt I'm as smart as L.
