Itachi was ill. Very ill. It's a similar scenario to when Orochimaru kept a dying Kimimaro alive for whatever reason. It would be torture for him to live in that body. Madara said that Itachi "prayed every day for the release of death." (Chapter 401) Sadly, Itachi appears to have been a little bit suicidal. So all those who complain about Itachi's undeniably untimely death, just remember that he wanted to die.
